It hasn't been confirmed yet by Nintendo, and it's quite possible that it might not be true. But according to what I recently saw on the Serebii site that there's a rumor that a third Pokemon game for the 4th generation (the Diamond & Pearl generation) might be in the works. The game, tentatively titled Pokemon Platinum, follows the lines of the third installments for the prior three generations of Pokemon games (Pokemon Yellow in the 1st gen, Pokemon Crystal for the 2nd gen, and Pokemon Emerald for the 3rd gen). Some of the highlights of the new game include the following:
The game is tentatively scheduled for a September release in Japan.
Giratina (the featured Pokemon in the upcoming 11th movie) will be on the box.
Volkner is no longer the Sunnyshore Gym leader.
The Underground will be Wi-Fi compatible (it wasn't in the D/P games).
There will be an island called Battle Island, which will work the same way as the Battle Frontier in Pokemon Emerald.
Several Pokemon will have new forms and possibly new abilities. As I stated before, this has not been officially confirmed by Nintendo at this time. I'll let you know as soon as more information becomes available.

Volkner is no longer the Sunnyshore Gym leader. Oh I know, he's the new champion replacing Cynthia, right? Well I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

Could be, but I'm not sure. If Volkner is the new champ, he should have better Pokemon than what he used in the Sunnyshore Gym.

I guess either that or replace that member's name I don't remember that used fire-types. I could probably see him being the eighth gym leader.

I think it's inevitable for this to come out. Just the details are iffy. If there's new Pokemon/forms I might pick this up but otherwise I'd like to pass. I've bought so many Pokemon games since Ruby/Sapphire came out in my quest to "catch 'em all" and it's driving me crazy.
The game still sells gangbusters despite most of the fanbase being grown up from the big Pokemon craze here in the States.

I'd almost say Diamond and Pearl created a new generation of fans. There's a good amount of 14 year olds and younger that play that weren't playing with the original generation.

I can remember it selling 500,000k when it came out. I've only played and had Red, Blue, and Yellow with Pikachu.

Yeah, I played those original games too. Let's just say Pokemon has gotten a lot better, but simultaneously a lot more insane. There's nearly 500 critters, some of them have multiple forms (male and female Pikachus look different now - there's been genders since Gold/Silver), and it's a huge effort to collect 'em all legitly. I thought catching Mewtwo and convincing my friends to trade me their Eevee evolutions was hard enough!
The game has also gotten a lot more complex since then. There's breeding, egg moves, natures, EVs and IVs, etc. Honestly, I don't see how you can seriously play the game if you're under 10. You can catch stuff but you're not going to beat the serious battlers if you don't know what you're doing.

I don't own a DS though, but this might make me buy one to try it out. While I was into the card game and the TV series, the game at its core is addicting in raising a stable of Pokemon that YOU want, not some assigned party.

Well, with nearly 500 Pokemon you will get to raise up what you want. So whatever preference you have for battling you can definitely find it. You still only get 6 Pokemon in your party at a time but of course you can swap in other ones if you don't like certain ones or need certain ones to beat a particular kind of match.
There's a lot of good DS games now so if you buy a DS for Pokemon there's other games you'd probably like too.

I kinda wish they'd make double battling the standard in future installments. It adds more strategy to the game since you can boost your partner or debuff your enemies in more drastic ways, plus you can't spam certain moves since you could potentially take out your partner/boost your opponent. It would make things more unpredictable when fighting skilled tacticions. Plus they could add stuff like say, moves that could only be executed by two specific Pokemon (like in Chrono Trigger when you have to have specific characters in your team to do specific team up attacks) or two separate moves that create a new move when used in the same turn by a team. Really mix lots of these types of abilities up between various Pokemon to encourage people to use underused charaters and have really eclectic teams. I know there won't be anything like this in Platinum, but it would kick ass for the 5th generation. A graphic overhaul would be nice too. I mean the graphics do get better through each generation, but the game still looks a little dated. Make a game that gives the system a real workout. Especially since we're talking about a game that probably won't come out till the DS's successor hits Something that looks similar (but more polished of course) to say, the Saturn Shining Force games. Sorry I kinda jacked the thread, just thinking out loud. It's nice to dream :sdsmiley:.

Nah, this will almost certainly be DS - there's never been a 'third game' on a separate system to the games it spun off from. Yellow was GB, Crystal was GBC and Emerald was GBA, so I'd be very surprised if Platinum was on the DS2 or whatever. I'm pretty sure they start development on all three at the same time, minorly tweak the third and release it a year or two later.
As for graphics, although I'm shamefully addicted to Pokemon Pearl, I'm appalled Nintendo haven't done more to enhance it. The only reason I can think of for not improving the games visually is the ability to import Pokemon from the GBA games and maybe that somehow limits the DS games. When the DS is capable of Dragon Quest 9 though, Pokemon looks pretty pathetic in comparison.

I would love it if they could start actually animating the battles to a certain degree. I'm sure the DS could handle it.
I'm also pretty disappointed they haven't updated the sound much, either. You would think they could maybe put in some voice samples for the pokemon or something that would sound better than Game Boy sound effects.
I've been thinking it might be time to really "reboot" the franchise. So far, each new generation is really just an incremental change to the previous one, mostly just adding more pokemon. Even the "plot" and progression of each game is pretty much the same as the originals. How about just starting from square one and going back to about 150 pokemon, some returning and some brand new. 500+ pokemon just seems needlessly excessive to me. They could use the opportunity to really overhaul the battle system and shake things up a bit.

Oh god, the sound! How could I forget?! Horrible digital squawks each time a Pokemon appears, repetative and bland world map music, irritating sound effects everywhere... When we've heard perfect human speech from DS games, there's no reason 'dialogue' from the show can't be used for Pokemon. I'd much rather hear "Pika Pika! Pikachuuu!" than "Screeech!", for example.

I dunno. The Game Boy cries really don't bother me. It gives me that nostalgic feeling of when a pokemon comes out I'd be like, "oh that's Ponyta!" Though I can understand they sound out of sync compared to the D/P pokemon. Yeah, nostalgia can be evil, I just think that sometimes old sounds work better. If they started using the sounds from the anime, that would be a mixed bag. Personally I'd rather hear "Pocha!" than "Piplup!".

I know Platinum's going to be on the DS, I was talking more about improvements The Big N could make in the 5th generation of Pokemon games and beyond. Nintendo's never done two separate generations of Pokemon on the same system (Red/Blue/Yellow were original GB, Gold/Silver/Crystal were GB Color, etc.), plus the stuff I suggested would require a more major overhaul of the game than what these upgrades usually are. It was just thinking out loud about the franchise in general, not really Pokemon Platinum. That's why I apologized for jacking the thread. And chock up another vote here for actual Pokemon voice samples instead of just digital squawks.

Hopefully Platinum might at least make a few other Pokemon easier/possible to catch <Magby & Elekid with evolve items, some of the Emerald-Insert Pokemon such as Shuckle, maybe even some older legendaries...> along with whatever assuredly minor tweaks are made.
Does this alternate form of Giratina have any benefit beyond the different sprite?
And does anyone else think 'Pokemon Onyx' would suit the game better, both in naming pattern with Diamond and Pearl, and with the seeming darker theme of this game? Or is it just me?

Honestly, I think "platinum" would have suited Gold and Silver better and have "Crystal" to go with Diamond and Pearl. But yeah, it doesn't suit Giratina. And while Onyx might suit the game better, all the dopey casual Pokemon players would be spamming stupid topics to why the game is dedicated to a rock snake. :P

In case anyone didn't know, this is a reminder that Darkrai is available for download at participating Toys 'R' Us stores across the U.S. this Saturday and Sunday between 12pm to 4pm. I already got my 2 Manaphy's through this method (one for Diamond and one for Pearl) and I definitely won't be missing this oppurtunity either.

Yep, I'm going too. I haven't missed a Pokemon event since Journey Across America, so this will be my 4th Pokemon event since July 2006 (second was TRU Mew event). I still regret not being able to go to the Deoxys event, so I make sure not to miss them.

Almost coinciding with the release of the Darkrai movie on DVD this past Tuesday. But I already have a Darkrai of my own (albeit through the Action Replay cheat device, but it's still a legit Pokemon and not a code-induced enhanced version) so I'm passing on it.

I'd suggest you go tomorrow (or today if you have time before they stop giving it out). It's the Japanese movie Darkrai pretty much. It has Roar of Time and Spacial Rend, moves that you can't get on Darkrai normally. I've got mine now.

For the Wonder Card Pokemon (the previous Manaphy and now this Darkrai) you could've resetted until you got the nature and stats you wanted. As long as you didn't save after you picked it up from the guy in the Poke Mart, that is.

Reviving this thread to inform you that Nintendo of America has confirmed that the North American street date for Pokemon Platinum is March 22, 2009 (a Sunday). The street date was revealed through an accidental leak at Circuit City's website, but NoA recently made the March 22 date official. I expect that the major retailers like Best Buy and Toys-R-Us will be offering pre-orders for the Platinum game very soon.

I really don't want to get back into Pokemon. I really don't. But after hearing about this (http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml), I can't control myself. Technically they did run out of colors. That's why you have Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. I just want them to move on from minerals and title versions based on gases.:P
EDIT: I take that back. While there's Diamond and Heart Gold, I want them to release Pokemon Spade and Pokemon Clover.;)

I'm just going to repost something I wrote up for another forum because...well, I don't feel like retyping it all again:
Would it be bad for me to wish that this entire release completely bombed and caused the Pokemon license to go into a Metroid-style hibernation for 8-10 years or so? Yeah I know, maybe while that's going on Satan can set up an Ice Cream stand in Hell.
I used to be a huge fan of the franchise (Blue, Yellow, LeafGreen, Pearl) and I did enjoy my time with Pokemon Pearl, but the core gameplay and presentation was still pretty much identical to that in the original game on the GameBoy, just with dual battles and equipable items. This is Nintendo's version of Dragon Quest, and do we really need another series of Pokemon remakes when the series core gameplay and presentation has barely changed much since the original games?
As long as people keep buying this crap, Nintendo is never going to advance this series forward into something new and interesting. Really, when you strip away the excess minigames and whatnot, what part of these games not only couldn't be done on the original GameBoy but WASN'T done on the original GameBoy? These will probably be good games, as they've all been good if basic RPGs. They're just completely unnecessary, and only further my extreme disinterest in the license.

You can go ahead and wish all you want, but you and I and everyone else knows that it'll never happen. Pokemon is still drastically popular on both sides of the Pacific and of course as long as people continue to spend money on the franchise, there's really no reason for Nintendo to shut it down. Though I do agree that the franchise does need some revamping (if the creators went as far as using household appliances as Pokemon, then you know that they are starting to run out of ideas :P).
Naturally, being the avid Pokemon player/fan that I am, of course I'm going to buy the upgrades once they hit North America next year. I would say that we will probably see these carts in North America sometime around March 2010 if they follow the same pattern as the release of Platinum. The Gold & Silver remakes are scheduled to street in Japan in September.

That would be awesome, but Shugo Chara will never be as big as Pokemon. I think Pretty Cure is the big Magical Girl anime at the moment. Though Yoru does remind me of Meowth and El to Wobbufett. Though an idea of a Pokemon style Shugo Chara game would be fun. Go around battling charas and catch them with eggs. Though it opens a paradox on how breeding would work.
