Heh... I started to ask this a few days ago, but thought hair color was too silly a topic and stopped. Then I saw Quarkboy's thread about ambiguous hair color and decided "Why not?" :)

I've been watching Monochrome Factor (yeah, I know), and I find it a bit charming that the blond best-friend, Kengo, is shown in flashbacks as having dark hair as a child. I like that the animators obviously thought about the fact that a Japanese elementary school kid wouldn't have been dying his hair yet, and colored the flashbacks accordingly.

I'm curious for other examples of odd hair colors where it's made clear that they really *do* dye their hair, or if that's too hard, examples where the hair color *is* natural and it's explicitly discussed as such. Two that come to mind off-hand are Kyoko in 12 Kingdoms and the various zodiac members in Fruits Basket. (That scene where Hatsuharu proves that his two-toned hair-color is natural in Furuba is one of the funniest things *ever*.)

In Martian Successor Nadesico, the character Ryoko Subaru has green hair. However, in a flashback to when she was a child, she had black hair. In the movie sequel she's gone back to her natural hair color.

Sue Harris from Argent Soma has her hair dyed for most of the series.

I'm pretty sure, if I know my Bleach lore correctly, is that Ichigo's orange hair is actually the natural colour, and he seems to get a bad rep 'cause people think - as referenced in the title - that he's bleached it.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Crest of the Stars. Lafiel dyes her hair blackwhile on the run with Jinto, to disguise the fact that she's an Abh. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCBA-132 In the compilation Special OVA, there is an exclusive scene showing her trying to remove the dye, unhappily

In The Twelve Kingdoms Youko's hair is naturally red but she has to dye it black, which doesn't make her hair black but a darker shade of red, just so that her hair doesn't stand out too much.

I don't know if this counts, but when Motoko from GITS SAC goes into her "other body" while surfing the web complete with purplish hair.

In Shadow Star Narutaru the main character, Shiina, dyes her hair black at the end. It was originally purple.

In Super GALs, both Ran and Miyu talk about bleaching their hair. In general, probably because changing the color of their hair as a means of self-expression, was part of GAL culture, this is one show where anyone who doesn't have black hair, is most likely lightening it or coloring it in some fashion.

Setsuna from Negima is an albino (hence her white wings instead of the black one would expect of a crow demon) and uses hair dye and colored contact lenses to hide this fact.

On the other hand, Urumi Kanzaki from GTO, despite being Japanese, is a natural blonde due to the particulars of the sperm chosen by her mother from the donor.

It's not mentioned in the anime (as far as I know), but Princess Ayeka from Tenchi Muyo dyes her hair dark purple. Her natural hair color is the same as Sasami's.

Female Ranma (in the anime) is a natural redhead. No dye there.

Ako from Negima. It is stated that her hair and eye color are natural.

Actually, I misspoke. She doesn't dye her hair per se... she actually had her genes manipulated to make her hair dark purple (to look more like Funaho, because she thought that's what Yosho liked).

I might be wrong, but doesn't Ritsuko from Eva have black hair in the flashbacks?

Momo in Peach Girl doesn't dye her hair, although many people in the show thinks she does. It is actually bleached from the chlorine in the pool since she was always on the swim team.

I remember visiting Japan and thinking that almost no girls around college-age had black hair.

Yep, Ritsuko's a bottle blonde. She natually has the same hair color as her mom did ... which is why she peroxides it now.

Kyo and Hatsuharu from Fruits Basket are both guys who have not dyed their hair, but have been accused of doing so.

Kyo is a natural red-head, at least according to his protests to the teacher that he's not actually dying his hair. (Plus, we see him as a child, with his "orange top" hair.)

Haru's white hair is also natural. We know this because, after being accused of it being dyed, he dragged the Student Council President into the bathroom to *cough* "prove" it.

This probably doesn't count, but when Lina Inverse (Slayers) is magically drained (well, basically she's used up a little too much of her energy on spells) her hair turns white for awhile. So, you could call it natural :)
