View Full Version : Character looks, traits, mannerisms, or interactions that "carry on"
A lot of times we see this in Hollywood movies, the most notable "The Matrix" where "bullet time" instantly became the "must use" Hollywood effect and everything had to have it. The same can go for anime, especially when you have a popular show or character. You have the classics like the sweat bubble, going SD, making faces, and many more. The first "mannerism" that I instantly thought of and want to use as my example is the "Yurie Scowl". I'm sure you've seen different variations of this:

I've seen it countless manga, anime, even ero. What are some that you're a fan of or some that you have noticed?

Can't forget that 'cross vein' you'd see whenever characters are angry, or tears that flow like waterfalls. :)

Characters with 'fox-like' squinted eyes.
Said characters opening their eyes wide when they're up to something, are surprised, or are being dead serious.

Cheerful female characters constantly having a visible tooth/fang in their mouth.
Mischievous characters having a top lip resembling a cat.
Shocked characters' eyes turning into black circles filled with white.

Here are a couple I've thought of off the top of my head:
The Galaxy Angel Rune opening dance with keep-out tape in the background.
A certain image of Himeko and Chikane about to embrace from Kannazuki no Miko (original by Kaishaku, I believe).
A scene in the opening to Popotan (game) made popular by CaramellDansen.
Orihime holding a spining leek (Bleach).[1]
The opening to Nursery☆Rhyme, "True to my Heart," (by ave;new).[2]
I've seen these images spoofed for fanart/MADs/Doujinshi for all sorts of anime.
[1]Can we say, Hatsune Miku?
[2] I strongly recommend hunting down the Clannad and Lucky☆Star versions of this spoof. It's amazing how close to the original they made it.

Variably Reflective Glasses - glasses that go from transparent to opaque with glare when the character wearing them is about to do or say something devious.

No-pupil eyes. Something has just gone very wrong with the character's mental state--they're probably mind-controlled. Watch out!
Cutesy sentence ending nonsense syllables. Possibly starting with Lum's "-chu" in Urusei Yatsura. Catgirls invariably use "-nya." This has morphed (starting with Card Captor Sakura?) into cutesy nonsense words indicating mild distress or embarassment ("Uguu," "Gao.")

One gesture I've noticed a lot is the "I get it!" gesture, which involves pounding one's right hand in a fist onto one's left palm. Happens in many many series, and I've never seen it the other way around with left fist / right palm.

Ebichu invents her own cutesy words to make her more lovable, like "dechu", but still gets splatted.
