View Full Version : The summer anime season is coming: What will you watch?
With the last days of May slowly coming to a close, with series that we're following heading into the home stretch(except for Macross Frontier and things like that), my sights turn to the Summer season, a mere few days away even though all the good stuff starts in July.
Some already have individual threads, but this is a more of "what you'll be watching" or "what you're interested in". Here is a list of shows confirmed for Summer:
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/6119/1211834177144kq3.jpg
So far the things that seem interesting to me are:
Chocolate Underground (http://www.choco-bar.jp/index/next.html) - All Production I.G with catchy designs
Birdy TV (http://www.birdy-tv.com/) - A remake of an old school classic, can't wait for it
Natsume (http://www.natsume-anime.jp/) - Brought up in the Kure-Nai thread a little, Brains Base has been on a role lately even if the premise does remind me of Mushishi.
Code E: Mission E (http://avexmovie.jp/lineup/mission-e/) - The first season was charming and light hearted, it looks like they took this season in an entirely different direction.
Blade of the Immortal (http://mugen.kc.kodansha.co.jp/) - Of course you'd at least have to check this out after the masterpiece that was the manga. Even though this'll most likely fall victim to some high expectations from a lot of people, it still seems interesting.
Sekirei (http://www.sekirei-tv.com/) - It'll probably be shallow, it'll probably just be fighting and fanservice, but I'll still check it out
Ryoko's Case File (http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/yakushijiryouko/) - A detective series from the LOGH author? Sounds good enough to me
Haruka Nogizaki`s Secret (http://www.nogizaka-haruka.com/) - An ultra popular girl whose secretly a fan of anime and manga? Sounds like fun
What will you be watching?

Without looking further, three sequels are of course definite: Slayers Revolution, Hidamari x 365 and Mahou Tsukai: Natsu no Sora. Hidamari most of all.
Koihime Musou I've seen fanart for so I'll get that.
Mission-E is a sequel of Code-E? Maybe I'll finally make the time to marathon Code-E in the coming month or so, and if I like it I'll watch M-E.
Going purely off the images there (not looking int the sites yet, will do that later), Nogizaka, Strike Witches and Sekirei look like winners.
Telepathy Shoujo Ran will get watched because... well it's clearly about a girl and thats about as much motivation as I need.
Based on production studio, I have to try Natsume Yuujin-Chou (Brains Base) and World Destruction (Prod I.G.). Was going to look into Chocolate Underground but its an ONA, so I'll almost certainly pass.
Edit: it wasn't in the image so I didn't think of it, but yes I'm watching ZnT 3 of course.

ANN lists it as a sequel, the first season of Code-E needed one as it just kind of "cut off" at twelve episodes. This one seems to of turned them all into some sort of "Power Rangers", so I guess we'll see how good it's.
World Destruction does look interesting even if it's based on an RPG from Sega. I was a little wary to include it after things like Druaga, not knowing what the quality will be like.

I'll be checking out the first episode of everything except Antique Bakery (not my thing), Hidamari Sketch X 365 (haven't completed the first season) and Code-E (haven't watched the first season).
Looking forward to..
Ryoko's Case File - It's from the author of LOGH and the extensive write up of the series I read from a Suki poster makes this semm like something I will really enjoy. I also really like the VAs for the main characters in Hitomi Nabatame, Hidenobu Kiuchi (Dr Tenma!) and Houko Kuwashima. Also this is a rare Seinen title (wtb more seinen titles!) and imo the character designs are striking, especially Ryoko.
http://img355.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cfyrwp2kw6.png
Birdy the Mighty - I'm hoping for an action scene as crazy as episode 12 of Noein because Ryotimo is involved in this, looks like fun too.
Detriot Metal City - Studio 4c are amazing and I've heard a lot of good things about the manga.
Sekirei/Ikkitousen - Fanservice fluff.
Also Znt3 should be on that list.

Chocolate Underground(sounds pretty good), Strike Witches(Need sum Gonzo lulz) and Natsume Yuujin-Chou(eh, sounds like Mushishi? I'll look at it) looks good. I'm curious about World Destruction(It's I.G., so it'd be worth checking out atleast). I'll watch the first episodes of each and give'em a shot.
Also Znt3 should be on that list.
It isn't on the picture list but it's airing. I would link to the site that I normally use for new seasons but I'm not sure if the mods would like it since it lists "groups" along with the shows and when they start. Went with the picture because at least it's something visual.

Oh, god, that makes me think of the Shining Tears anime, which doesn't get my hopes up. :sd: Well, maybe ProdIG can make up for that.

Heres the main site if interested, even has a link to the game. Seems like it's based off a RPG for the DS at that, the settings for the game and characters do look nice, if anyone can do it, Production I.G can.

They are too many shows I haven't finished from a couple seasons ago! But I must watch Hidamari Sketch x365.

Let's see...
Macross F continues on into next season as does Soul Eater. I still don't know how long ZKC is supposed to run.
Hidamari is a given, and even though it looks really weird compared to Code E, I'll likely watch Mission E. I liked the promo short for Strike Witches a ways back, so I'll likely watch that too. The rest I'll hopefully have time to check out the first episode of, but what I'm already planning on watching will likely fill up what time I have for watching anime.
well right now the only one that i've really looked into was Chocolate Underground, so thats what so far i'll be watching.

I'm looking forward to...
Antique Bakery
Birdy The Mighty Decode
Chocolate Underground
Detroit Metal City
Hidamari Sketch x365
Sekirei
Telepathy Girl Ran
My most anticipated is Antique Bakery.
If it's anything like the manga, it'll probably end up being my favorite for the season.
Looked up some more info on it, and it seems to be from the same studio as Tales of Agriculture. The cast also looks really good.
It's also the summer noitaminA show.
So, yeah, it'll most likely end up as my favorite.

Looking at the list, Slayers Revolution and Hidamari Sketch x365 are the only pair I'm interested in straight away. I may look into some plot synopsis to see if I'd like a few others, such as Strike Witches.

For ratings. DVD sales for anime airing during Fuji Television's noitaminA block are another matter.

Really? One would think that if something has really high ratings it would turn into people buying the DVD's and products. There was an explosion of those Moyashimon "Bacteria Toys" after the show aired.

What will you be watching?
Out of the announced TV Anime the only series that ~somewhat~ interests me as of now is Koihime†Musou (http://www.mmv.co.jp/special/koihime/), though I must admit the major curiosity in this Anime adaption being founded within the fripSide involvement (http://www.animeondvd.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=82228) and because I'm curious to see how good/bad Hinata Katagiri's original designs will transmit into Anime (plus a BaseSon Soft getting a non-Adult Anime adaption gets me partwise anticipating this as well).

Edit: Updating post a bit now.
I'm going to need more information on most of these series before making a decision. Perhaps official site links would work better... Although I see at least some are linked here. However it's obvious that I'm going to try out "Slayers Revolution" and "Hidamari Sketch X 365" or what it should really be called "Hidamari Sketch Yuno Forever!" What? Stuff like Mission E depends on whether or not I ever get around to trying the previous series..
All right looking at some of the actual sites, I'll update my comments now. Automatic means set in stone. Stuff like Hidamari Sketch X 365. Interested means stuff I'm really curious about. Need More info means I'm uncertain. Pass means uh no way.
Automatic
Hidamari Sketch x365: Since the previous series is my most desired license right now.
Slayers REVOLUTION: More Slayers is a good thing.
Interested
Strike Witches: Wow there's several cute girls in this one. Although watch the ones I have the most interest in get the least amount of screen time. Still Sanya V. Litvyak looks rather cute.
Telepathy Shoujo Ran: It's the title...
Koihime†Musou: The two girls look nice to me.
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu: It has me a bit curious.
Need More Info (Not much to say on these)
World Destruction
Chocolate Underground
Ultraviolet: Code 044
Seiyou Kottou Yougaiten ~Antique~
Natsume Yuujinchou
Mission-E
Yakushiji Ryouko no Kaiki Jikenbo -Ryoko's Case File
Pass
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~Natsu no Sora~: I found the previous series a bit lacking.
Zero no Tsukaima ~Miyoshi Hime no Rondo: One season was way too much for me....
Sekirei: Something about the designs makes me hesitant to try this one.
Blade of the Immortal: Uh it doesn't seem to be the type that will appeal to me.
Birdy the Mighty Decode: I never could get into the original.
RoboDz Fuunkun: Uh I don't think the style is for me.
Ikkitousen Great Guardians: I'm not even going to bother...

When was a Detroit Metal City anime announced?! I'm so on that. I'll also get around to Hidamari x365 when I get around to Season 1 :P
Looks like Michiko to Hatchin, Clannad After, KoJikan 2 and MariMite 4 aren't coming until the fall... I was hoping at least one of them would show up in this coming season.

I was a little wary to include it after things like Druaga, not knowing what the quality will be like.
Well so far Druaga has been awesome for the type of show it's meant to be. It's certainly working better for me than some other game based anime. I take it as a case by case basis. I also get this feeling that sometimes people's opinions on a show could completely change soley based on whether or not they know a given anime is based on a game...

The problem with the Shining Tears Anime is apparently you needed to play the game Shining Wind to get the full story. Which might explain some of the feeling I got from it.

Well unless it's a hugely popular game, or something like FF:U...
It depends who they're going to market the anime to really, fans of the game or "mainstream" fans that find the show interesting and will go check the game out.

True and there's the matter of how much respect the anime has for the source material. Sometimes the adaptation makes it clear the staff hates the original.

Really? One would think that if something has really high ratings it would turn into people buying the DVD's and products. There was an explosion of those Moyashimon "Bacteria Toys" after the show aired.
Moyashimon performed decently on DVD, I think. However, sales of Noitamina shows range anywhere from poor to pretty good.
Sales are never as fantastic as critical feedback or TV ratings might suggest, and that's because those series aren't targeted toward the core DVD-buying demographic (male otaku).
Aya mentioned it, but here is a giant list of URL's for those wanting to check out the series sites.

I'm definitely watching Zero no Tsukaima 3 and Hidamari Sketch x365 due to having watched the previous seasons.
I've heard of Sekirei before and from what little I know about it, it seems like it should be some good brainless fun at the very least.
I'm not really familiar with any of the others and nothing jumps out as "Must Watch" material. But based on the pics and websites, I'm interested in the following:
World Destruction
Strike Witches
Ryoko's Case File
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora
Telepathy Shojo Ran
Nogizaka Haruka's Secret
Koihime Musou
However, I typically at least try an episode or two of just about everything in each season, so I'll be giving some of the others a try anyway, though I'll definitely be passing on Antique Bakery, Detroit Metal City, and Ikki Tousen and I probably won't bother with Ultra Violet.
I haven't seen the first series of Code-E and I'm not sure I want to try to find the time to marathon of it in order to watch Mission E, but I'll wait and see how things go.

Looking at some of the sales of the noitaminA DVD series, they don't seem that bad really. Actually seems pretty good.
It didn't sell as well Geass, KyoAni Projects, Gundam, or Dragonball, but seemed higher than most other titles.
But, now we're just getting really off-topic.

Birdy the Mighty is the only one I have any confidence in. Didn't like the earlier OAV at all, but the new manga is fantastic, and they have a much better director this time around.
I might look at Blade of the Immortal, but odds are, I'll just read the manga.
Definitely checking out Natsume Yuujin-cho - director of Baccano!, so he's earned a chance.
Maybe Ryoko's Case File or Detroit Metal City.
That's about it unless I hear some surprise buzz from something.

Just going off what little I know about these, I think I'm going to check out the following:
Chocolate Underground - Checking it out because of Production IG but the director doesn't inspire much confidence.
Detroit Metal City - Metal and Studio 4C... I'm in.
Blade of the Immortal - I've heard good things about the manga but since it's Bee Train making this I'm not expecting anything great.
Natsume Yuujin-Chou - Same director as Baccano. This could be good.
Ultraviolet: Code 044 - Checking this out solely because of Osamu Dezaki directing and Madhouse. Hoping this won't suck.
World Destruction - I'll check it out because of Production IG I guess.
Other than Detroit Metal City, I don't have high expectations for anything else. I hope a couple of these shows turn out good.

Just a rough guideline based on early looks really, no harm in making a list of stuff to check out the first episode of. Who knows if any of these shows that catch your eye now will be any good when they air(I'm looking at you Kissdum..)? Thats half the fun ;)
Just to see what some of these shows look like in motion, here are some early Youtube trailers.
Sekirei (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ifEZYJeSVQ0) - Might be a little NSFW

Whatever I or anyone else might mention in my post, I'm obviously going to check out at least an ep of pretty much everything, including that. Same thing I do every season. I doubt anyone's entire summer season watching plans are dictated by this one image and our posts to it.

Eh, it is a manga series so it's not like there's a particular lack of information about it, and to be honest, I didn't get the feeling anyone who was saying "definitely passing" didn't have a rather specific reason in mind.
It's an excellent series. Yes, it has a couple of gay characters in it, but that's not what the series is about, so it's really irksome to feel like people are passing on it for that reason alone. If something isn't your cup of tea, it isn't your cup of tea--but I think it's kinda nice to at least take a sip before deciding, you know?
EDIT: Though looking back, there aren't many who mentioned it specifically one way or the other, so sorry if this came off as an attack. It's just a good series and the adaptation will hopefully be good, so I'd like to see it get a nice bit of attention.

I don't try everything (too lazy) but I try as much as I can.
Personally, I can almost always tell what I will like based upon character designs, animation studio, and the source material. I don't have the time or money to give every show an equal chance nor are there always methods that meet certain minimum standards of mine for every show. If certain friends strongly recommend a show, I will usually try it out, provided certain conditions are met. Otherwise, I pass on most anime.
As of right now, I'm only interested in Zero no Tsukaima ~Miyoshi Hime no Rondo, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, and the Negima Ala Alba OAVs. I'll also watch Hidamari Sketch x365 & Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto~Natsu no Sora~, once I get around to watching more than one episode of Hidamari and any of the latter.
Series under consideration for R2 pick-up:

*shrugs* It's also useful to remember that a number of us (I have to figure I'm not alone in this... I hope... :blush1:) don't know much if anything at all about much of the manga or light novels running or recently out (either domestically or in Japan), so in many cases the announcement of an anime is the first exposure many of us will have to a title. In this case as well, it doesn't help that there wasn't a link (that I can see) to a page for the show in Lego's big list-o-links (and since I usually am browsing from work, I can't see most pictures people link since most image-hosting sites are blocked).
Knowing that Antique Bakery is a SoL (probably my favorite genre) though does bump it up in likelyhood that I'll watch it- though like a number of others, I'll likely watch the first episode of everything I can to get a feel for things and go from there.

Perhaps, but honestly ever season has stuff I completely skip for one reason or the other. Also since some of these are sequels for better or for worse that helps me decide whether to even bother with anymore of it. Still as even the Spring season has reminded things are subject to change. I consider this more of a primary deciding session and not really the finalized one.

When was a Detroit Metal City anime announced?! I'm so on that
First I heard of it,was November last year on a blog.
I was under the impression that "The Five Killers" was an original thing, kind of like Afro Samurai and the Animatrix and wasn't going to air on Japanese TV.
As for Antique Bakery, I couldn't find a site to post or I would of. They made a live action drama out of it, so thats all I could find plus the manga.
Pretty much, I equate it to movie trailers before a movie or following a game until it gets released. While I usually have a pretty good nose for what I like and watch, I'm always pleasantly surprised when I find something that I overlooked or didn't think I'd enjoy.

Gee, all these people passing on Antique Bakery--I had no idea that excellently characterized slice-of-life shows were so universally disliked on this board. >_> (Hint: it's not a BL series.)
Everything I've ever seen of it gives off BL vibes. Not a genre that I have an interest in. Perhaps I was mistaken, so I'll probably watch an episode unless I'm bogged down in other stuff, but I'm not expecting much from it.

Like I said, I didn't mean for it to come off as an attack to those that just didn't know anything about it one way or the other, so let me state it clearly. If you're passing on Antique Bakery because you think it's a BL show, that's like passing on Emma because you hate fanservice maid shows.
Here's a really good write up on the manga that should give people a better idea of what the series is really like. (http://www.comicworldnews.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?column=flipped&page=95)

I do have to admit that when I looked at the picture of the show then browsed around looking at information, boys love immediately came to mind and I instantly thought "well thats not my cup of tea". It isn't like I'm totally adverse to things like Antique Bakery, Honey & Clover is a personal favorite as well as Emma. Thats the hurdle it'll have to overcome when it airs, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

It's mistaken for a BL manga a lot of the time, but it's far from being one. It's a slice-of-life story, with lots of fun twists and turns, both drama and humor and of course, lots of delicious cakes. All four main characters are well balanced against each other. Some of the stories in the manga is about the main characters, other stories are based on the customers who visit the bakery. I hope the anime will be as good as the manga, which I know a lot of guys read and really enjoyed.

I am sorry.Does it have to air in Japan to qualify in this thread ? To be perfectly honest,I am not sure if it will.I was under the impression it would.
For the most part its being created, directed, produced and animated in a Japanese studio (Gonzo). The screenplay writer and original story idea were American in origin though. Not trying to argue,I just dont know the rules for these types of threads.

Gonzo is working on Linebarrel (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XEHCZA_qF7E) for this fall, so maybe thats where the budget is going. First Dragonaut, then Blassreiter . Also look around for the star crossed blog that reviews it,but, beware for spoliers.I am up to ep 21 of 52+ planned.
Aside from Hidamari x365, which is an automatic must-watch, I feel like it's too early to really pick out anything just yet. The lineup is small enough that a person could almost give everything a chance this season before deciding what to follow.

Seven Arcs? That could be good or bad. Nanoha is great (well, first and second seasons anyway) but damn Seven Arcs needs to learn what a budget is. They clearly didn't have one for StrikerS, outside of a few episodes here and there. And despite some seriously amazing battles in 1st and A's, consistency in production values was never the main draw for Nanoha.
Despite all the things it did right, I just can't think of StrikerS (and thus Seven Arcs) without the word foremost in my mind being "disappointment", so I'm not sure what to expect with Sekirei. How do I judge a company whose only major productions to date are two of the best shows ever, and one of the most disappointing shows ever?
...Well, by watching and finding out, of course :sd:
HitokiriShadow
06-05-2008, 03:27 PM
And unlike Nanoha, this is an adaptation rather than a spin-off they wrote all on their own. They may need to make their own ending or non-ending, but the bulk of it is written for them already (probably; I suppose they could go a completely different direction almost right off the bat, but that seems very unlikely).
But as it seems to involve some action, hopefully they'll be able to make some of those battles as impressive as the better ones from Nanoha. I'll cry if they induce Kyaro vs. Lutecia flashbacks.

Is Slayers really gonna be out so soon? If so then all your choices are wrong. We should ALL WATCH SLAYERS. All the time. Over and over again. So that the likelihood of a swift delivery Stateside is increased.
SLAYERS!!!!!
I've seen previews of the opening and ending out already, it's a Summer show.

Looking around the main site,I saw Production IG mentioned a few times.I wonder what that means ?

I hope your wrong, but you'll likely end up being right. :(
What I really want is for IG to handling the whole thing.

It's being done by Bee Train, which happens to be a subsidary of Production IG (nowhere near their level though, IMO).

You'd be surprised when you watch the credits scroll how many different companies will work on something. Production I.G even helped with FLCL.

A lot of stuff gets outsourced, Manglobe and Gainax did an episode each of Gurren Lagann, Bee Train did two episodes of Code Geass, Bones did a lot of work on one episode of both Fafner and Overman King Gainer etc.

Yep, it's more surprising that it wasn't a cheapy Korean studio heh. Still I have tons of confidence in Bee Train, first Baccano and now Kure-Nai.

You're mixing up Brains Base with Bee Train.

I'm?, Bah...
Well either are slouches in the animation game, so I'll cover myself with that . I'm sure you'll have a couple studios getting work from BOTI, it's a highly anticipated show.

If you're passing on Antique Bakery because you think it's a BL show, that's like passing on Emma because you hate fanservice maid shows.
LOL, good comparison!
I don't know anything about the upcoming summer season except for Antique Bakery, which I'm extremely excited about. I'll have to take a look at all the links later.
Antique Bakery is one of my all time favorite manga. It's very slice of life, where one or two of the characters happen to be gay, but that's not really the focus of the story. I thought it was funny, cute, and just all around good. The art style is minimalistic, very simple lines. And the food descriptions are to die for.

After further homework and examination (staff, animation studio, who sings the OP/ED-whos doing the OST, other factors) I've decided on a final list of what I'll watch:
Natsume Yuujin-Chou
Takahiro Omori is directing, who did Baccano and Hell Girl, both of which I didn't like with a passion. However, I rather liked Gakuen Alice. As for the Series Composition, Kenichi Kanemaki did Detective Loki and Tactics, which I enjoyed. However, he also did Hell Girl and some Galaxy Angel, both of which I disliked with a passion. As for the person who sings the opening song, never heard of him/her. Everyone knows my feels on BrainsBase, I don't like them at all. I'm willing to give Natsume a chance, but if it doesn't sell me within 2 episodes, its out. It's on thin ice. At 13 episodes, it better deliver in those 2 episodes.
World Destruction
I'm not familar with any of director Shunsuke Tada's works. As for series comp Masahiro Yokotani, I'm not familar with any works of his either. The music, being done by Yoshihiro Ike was involved with Karas and Ergo Proxy, both of which I really liked. It's another 13 episode series, I'll give it a shot. Never heard of the OP band, AAA. More Production I.G. is a good thing, especially since they haven't really piqued my interest lately.
Birdy the Mighty Decode
Kazuki Akane, who I've come to love because of Noein and Heat Guy J. I didn't like Vision of Escaflowne TV series, but enjoyed the movie for various reasons. Hiroshi Ohnagi, who I've come to love because of Aquarion, Noein and Baldr Force EXE Resolution. I can safely say I liked or loved pretty much everything he's done. I have nothing bad to say about the guy. I haven't heard of Yuugo Kanno before, so this'll be interesting. Never heard of the OP band, Hearts Grow - but I've definately heard of the ED band, afromania. I'm not familar with A-1 Pictures, so this'll be interesting. At 13 episodes, I'll stick with this and watch it.
Hmm. Only 3 shows as the end result. Not bad. I guess the one I'm most looking forward to is Birdy, followed by World Destruction, then Natsume. The list grows shorter and shorter of series I like to see. Fall should be epic.
