Hmm the original was good enough but the new screens do look good. A 6.1 audio track finally

It looks pretty bad. Half-assed 3D will never be able to compete with good 2D animation.
I find it even more disturbing however that their intention seems to be to replace arbitrary shots here and there with 3DCG versions. If they remade the entire film, then maybe, but having characters be in 2D in one shot, only for them to suddenly be in 3D in the next, with a completely different look no less, seems crazy.

The very concept makes me twitch. It's fucking horrifying. Whoever came up with this idea needs to be introduced to a world of pain, ASAP.
It looks like they took CG that they'd use in GITS SAC and put it into a full feature movie that is GITS. For something like GITS you need almost Innocence level of animation or else it does look half assed. I'll still watch it or buy it if they decide to bring it over ;)

SAC had a lot of 3DCG; mainly cars, helicopters etc. and the Tachikoma, but at least they were consistent and tried their best to make them fit in. Instead imagine watching the same series but with every other shot done in the style of the first season opening. That's kind of what this seems like.

The series did make things look believable even if it was CG. I can remember the episode where Section 9 stormed the tower to rescue the one girl, good use of CG there. It looks more like they noticed how much money the Eva remake brought in and went "Hey, thats a good idea!".
I'm a bit confused though, will it be the same movie animation wise with "new CG bits" included or did they go through the whole movie and redo it?

Maybe I'm missing something, but where on earth are people getting the idea that they're going to be re-animating or replacing character animation? It just sounds to me like they're replacing computer monitor images and existing CG and the like, and enhancing the animation in certain scenes. Not replacing 2D Motoko with 3D Motoko in random scenes, as the knee-jerk reactions seem to suggest.

It looked as if they were doing just that at the end of the trailer clip....

Ah. Missed the link to the follow-up article and trailer clip. Though I still question whether or not we should worry about that being done extensively throughout the film. It was likely done for the scene in question for simplicity's sake, since it would've been awkward and difficult to try and composite in the existing Motoko 2D animation with everything else in the cut being completely redone in CG. I'd be very surprised if the were more than just a handful of full CG character shots, and those only at isolated points (again, like the scene in the trailer clip) so that you're not getting 2D animation and CG in consecutive cuts.

Honestly, at this point I know too little to know what I think about all this. I usually find CG mecha look awful and out of place, but other uses of CG may be passable. In any case, it's not like I'm obligated to pay attention to the new version anyway.

I'll admit I'll probably want to see it... But judging by the brief trailer and especially three "before and after" screen shots, I like how it looked originally better. Ah, well.

I'm going to go against the grain here, because I absolutely LOVE the sound of it AND the look of it.
Can't wait for it to be released : )

If they were only replacing old CG with new CG, re-compositing the original 2D animation with improved backgrounds, lighting, effects etc. then that might have merited a re-imagining, and might even have been interesting to see.
But replacing entire cuts with bad 3D versions, especially of characters, is just stupid; the frequency is not the issue. Besides, the iconic shots of Motoko on the rooftops are perfectly fine. Aside from clean-up and general improvement in the aforementioned categories, the only specific thing I can think of that needs to be fixed is the camouflage effect as she's falling down.

Why is 3d automatically Bad? If its going to be something akin to SAC and 2nd Gig, I'll pay up for it. This isn't some noname animation studio, this is Production I.G. If anyone can make it work, it'd be them

I don't like re-recordings generally. But..
In the new edition, the enigmatic Puppet Master character will be played by Yoshiko Sakakibara (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1022) (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence's Harraway, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=910)'s Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki).
sell it to me if it gets a release.

Yeah, The Sky Crawlers looks excellent.
On topic: The comparison images don't seem to be working for me.
Did see the video on the site though, and the last part (which was the actual CG) looked alright to me.

Even once = no sale. I want nothing to do with this.

Why is 3d automatically Bad?
It's automatically bad when it's inconsistent with the rest. And I'm not a big fan 3D productions that aren't either extremely realistic, or heavily stylized. In the case of the teaser, the 3DCG is simply too obvious. Same goes for the airplanes in Sky Crawlers by the way; as soon as the dogfights start I can't help but think "Ah, now we're in full-3D mode".

What's this "The Sky Crawler" movie mentioned?
I'm not inherently against this "because it's CG". CG can be awesome after all.
But I am Leery about it, because "Special Editions" with new CG effects shoehorned in, rarely work. See: Star Wars.

It's Mamoru Oshii's (same director of Ghost In the Shell) new film. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=8269
I just watched the trailer for this new version of GItS and it looked really good. I thought the CGI at the end looked well done. I'm not really one for older films getting reworked and having things changed but I hope this turns out good.

Given that i didn't buy it on BD, i'll definitely be getting this one on BD when it comes out. And hey for a change the recast is better than the original :)

I completely agree. Reading the news of this new version just plain made me feel sad.
I'd rather they just release the original version on Blu Ray with a transfer that doesn't have the problems that the current release reportedly has, and include the newer surround audio tracks from the previous DVD releases. I suppose this new version means the chances of that are pretty slim now. I now have a deeper appreciation for how all those die hard fans of the original Star Wars edits feel. I guess that's somewhat appropriate though, since the sound for this new version is being done at Skywalker Sound...

Don't get me wrong when I said earlier that I liked how it looked originally better. (This isn't directed just at you, chronoclast. I just chose your quote as an example of all those in the "I like it," camp.) I'll agree that it is nice looking CGI. Very nice. Quite beautiful CGI work.
Personally, though, as nice as the CGI looks, I still prefer how things looked in the film as originally presented. Mind you, I'll still want to take a look at this new version if it gets an R1 release.
It doesn't change the fact that they're trying to update a 13 year old movie using GITS SAC like CG effects. If what Sakura mentioned happens, you're going to have this amazing looking CG in one shot, then in the next you cut back to the original movie visuals.
I really don't think this is aimed at people who haven't seen the movie like Eva Rebuild was, this seems more aimed at fans of the property or people who have seen the original movie.

I watched the trailer. I think they are trying to rake in the cash by changing 10-15% of the film and then releasing it as a whole new movie. They also sexed up Matoko Kusanagi unnecessarily, to judge from the scenes in the trailer. IMHO: Rental shelf.

I wouldn't mind this so much if it was something like the new Eva film and they were going to reimagine the entire film, but if that clip at the end of Motoko is any indication of what the animation is going to be like, I'm going to be disappointed by this. The CGI graphics in that shot just look too video gameish like to me and the original version was just so iconic that it seems almost a shame to change it. Then again, it was only one shot and so maybe it'll get better if we have more footage to see from any additional trailers. In the case of the new Eva movie I didn't mind it since they were taking Eva into a new direction and the animation looked gorgeous, but this just seems so pointless to me.
