Who are your favorite nerdy characters in anime? They can be an anime geek, a studious bookworm, a know-it-all genius, or whatever we might think of as 'nerdy'.

Konota from "Lucky Star" has always been my favorite because of her blatant display or her otaku interests. She's really a fun character because she seems to know her otaku stuff from top to bottom and is willing to share it openly with the other girls.

And Kaoru Yamazaki from "Welcome to the NHK" is another favorite anime otaku of mine, especially considering what this guy's room looks like.

Yomiko Readman from Read or Die, hands down. But only OVA Yomiko; TV Yomiko just wasn't the same.

Second would be Megane from Urusei Yatsura, if only because of his epic-level loser-ness. He had a poster of Spock in his room.

My favorite Otaku:
Chika Ogiue (Genshiken)

I can't say more than that.

(But is a nerd and a geek really the same thing? - When I think nerd, I think somebody who is unpopular and greasy. When I think geek, I think somebody who is particularly obsessed with something that 'normals' would see as unfashionable, such as anime, computers, schoolwork, or even stamp collecting!)

So many choices. For women, I'll say Kanako Ohno from Genshiken. Such a lucious body hosting such a nerdy girl. Seriously, I'm in love.

For guys, I'll go with Hiroshi Karigari of My Dear Marie. He makes a robot in the image of the girl he's in love with, then wins the heart of the girl and the robot isn't jealous! Such an original idea. It needed to go longer.

Here's some that I could think of:

Yoshiki Yaegashi (Blue Seed)
Yomiko Readman (Read Or Die) (Already mentioned)
Koran Ri (Sakura Wars)

The lovable yet slow-witted and lewd "all arounder otaku" Satoshi "Sasshi" Imamiya from Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

The kindhearted yet science obsessed Jean Rouque Raltique of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and his enemy turned mentor and friend Hanson who hails from the same show.

Self proclaimed manga artist turned actual manga artist Hikaru Amano from Martian Successor Nadesico

And my current favorite, "Resemble Specialist/Freak" Yuto K. Steel of Solty Rei

Yoshiki Yaegashi (Blue Seed)

There's the winner. A nerd who proved he could be badass (in a very nerdly way), and won himself a badass woman.

Also:
Yuki Nagato from Haruhi
Yukino Miyazawa from Kare Kano
Fuu Hououji from Magic Knight Rayearth
Kazuto Iizuka from World of Narue (anime fanboy!)

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I especially liked them in the OVAs. The way they worked together was impressive.

All the ones that are female and hot or female and cute. Or both.

Gotta love Hiyori and Konata from Lucky Star, Chika and Kanako from Genshiken, Tsuyuri from Doujin Work, and so on.

Particularly the Sailor Stars version of Ami/Mercury, who could never admit that she was more Starlights fangirl than the other four put together... ^_^

I, however, must second the vote for UY's Megane:
<slips on glasses, glints with inspired glare>
Are we to look up on the mere "geek", with the social distancing of the content bourgeois?--NO! Megane embodies the true spirit, nay, the true essence, of all that a lifetime of researched geekdom demands, in a lifetime of pursuit...Ahh, the monk-like researching of the most arcane facts, each pursuit analyzed in detail of personal devotion, that future generations of those who share the passion will one day learn from...And who are we to castigate one mere Spock poster, when the remainder of his walls, as, too, the remainder of his acheivements, are dedicated to the one unregrettable pursuit of all our youth---LUM-SAAAAAN!!!

Thought of several more; Ritsuko, Maya & Hyuga in Evangelion. All are scientist-first, but each is involved in love triangles.

Maya :beatingheart: Ritsuko :beatingheart: Gendou
Hyuga :beatingheart: Misato :beatingheart: Kaji

My choices:

Jean from Nadia--Pretty much the same reason that KoujiTamano gave. He finds science fascinating and loves to build and read, but he's also a very sweet, kindhearted soul who uses his brains and generosity to go out of his way to help anyone he cares about. In other words, he's the sort of best friend (or in Nadia's case, love interest) anyone would ever want to have. (He's one of my all-time favorite anime characters/heroes, too.)

Kazuto Iizuka from The World of Narue--Like Jean, he is a nerdy but sweet guy, but of a completely different type: he loves Anime. Yet it is not accurate to say that he is a "nerd", because he displays his enthusiasm for his favorite show with Narue (who naturally isn't sold about the whole thing) instead of keeping it to himself. He's loyal and selfless, too; on some episodes he comes across as a bit wimpy, but when it comes to saving Narue, he really stands up for her.

Madarame from Genshiken -- The self-appointed leader of the Genshiken club is as obsessed with manga and anime as Kazuto is, but he is more of a nerd. He lords over everyone and acts all-knowing, but when it comes to social situations, he comes across as completely awkward. Yet there is something about him that is hilarious and, in an odd way, likable. I haven't pinpointed what it is, but he is very smarmy and comical, which is what makes every scene he's in a lot of fun.

Yuu Suzuki from Comic Party--She's more of a comic book artist, but I'd argue that she qualifies. She's sassy and pugnacious (when she gets into quarrels with her rival --whose name is escaping me at the moment--), but also supportive and kindly. In addition to encouraging poor Kazuki to pursue his dream as an artist, she also helps solidify his relationship with his best friend/girlfriend.

That's all I can think of for the moment.
