View Full Version : "Alive" gets an anime
Was browsing ANN and noticed this:
The official Japanese website of Monthly Shonen Magazine (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=1559) has confirmed (http://www.gekkanmagazine.com/topics/080616aliveAnime/080616aliveAnime.html) that Tadashi Kawashima (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=66641) and Adachitoka (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=66642)'s Alive - Saishū Shinka teki Shōnen (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=8147) supernatural adventure manga will be animated for television. The story follows a Tokyo high school boy named Taisuke Kanō after a virus causes entire cities to commit suicide across the world. However, Kanō and his friends not only survive the virus, but have evolved, as a species, into something darker.
Original manga designs and premise seems interesting enough, hopefully the staff will be good.

The manga's pretty average.
Can't say I'm looking forward to it, but I'll probably end up checking out an episode or two.

Awesome. The manga's been a favorite for a while now. Striking first volume, slightly ungainly genre shift over the next few, and somewhere in volume four it finds it's legs and turns into the best shonen superpower fighting manga around.

Since you're my "go to guy" for these things Andrew, hows the art in the manga itself? The character designs certainly do look nice, even the female designs but tons of things have pretty covers.

Some of the best looking stuff around.
On all levels; beautiful people (but not servicey to the point where it would turn girls off) strong expressions that really sell the emotional side of the writing, and action scenes you can actually follow.

Well, you've obviously read more than I have, so guess I can ask you.
Does it really change a lot?
I liked it early on, though as I kept going, it kind of slipped. I'd gotten through the 4th volume, and really haven't felt it improve since.
Our opinions obviously differ greatly, as I'm finding the character designs to be rather bland, and sometimes really sloppy, but hey, if it improves, guess I'll buy the next few ones as well.

4th volume was where it turned it around, yeah. Nami really made the book for me, and from there on out the storytelling never wavers.
I don't remember having any issues with the art, but then again, I haven't looked at the early volumes for a while; they might be a lot rougher than the art is now.

Sounds good then, now we just have to wait to see the staff.

Awesome! I loved what I read of the manga. The world always needs more seinen/shounen.

Gonzo & AIC to animate, Hiraike Yoshimasa to direct. Info from poster on AS who got it off Moonphase.

Hmm, mixed bag animation wise, although I do like AIC. At least they got Hiraike Yoshimasa.

Awesome. The manga's been a favorite for a while now. Striking first volume, slightly ungainly genre shift over the next few, and somewhere in volume four it finds it's legs and turns into the best shonen superpower fighting manga around.
Now I feel bad about dropping it after the 3rd volume.

I made it to volume seven or eight before giving up on it. I think that I generally liked the basic story and some of the concepts, but I got bored with the fights and kept rolling my eyes at the manipulation of the one boy (I'm not remembering any of their names ^_^; ).

I'd rather no anime than Gonzo murdering it.
