Now if there was just a way to tell if the Japanese audio has a lower bitrate compared to the R2s due to the inclusion of Chinese audio... Probably doesn't matter too much, but I always like to have the technically best version of a show...

I have the set, (just arrived today) and it looks pretty legit to me. It's got the usual copyright stuff and legalese at the start, all the menus are in Chinese, as opposed the mixture of Chinese, some Japanese and Engrish you'd see with boots. Picture and sound quality are very nice - I'm not a videophile, so that's as techincal an explanation as you'll get out of me. :) It looks as good as any R1 release to these eyes. (and I must say, for a late-90s anime it looks as polished as anything done today. It's fantastic!)
Box isn't your typical HK boot fare either. It's a four-disc set, with two keepcases holding two dvds each inside a spiffy-looking cardboard box with a metallic-looking finish to it. Sort of like the slipcases on Funi's FMP dvds.

Do you have a way of checking the audio bitrate? I guess you don't have a R3 PS3, but I think it can also be done with WinDVD (or was it PowerDVD... I think WinDVD, but I'm not positive).

No way of finding that out, I'm afraid. I don't have a PS3, nor PowerDVD either. I had a disc knocking about somewhere, but I can't find it now. Sorry I can't help you out on that front.
At any rate, it's a decent set and worth picking up to tide you over 'til (or if) MB releases it.*

*wishful thinking on my part. :) I really, really hope they do bring it over at some stage.
