View Full Version : Characters who you know mean well, but wind up annoying you

I think we're all familiar with the type. They are characters that to some degree you think you should like, as they do mean well: they have good intentions, they fight on the side of Good, etc. But somehow, they just wind up annoying the hell out of you.

The prime example would be Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay night. While he has the best of intentions, he's just so headstrong and stupid and annoying.

Another example from a show I'm only starting to get into would be Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass. Granted, I've only seen about the first six or seven episodes or something like that, but his whole "I'm going to change the system from the inside and then we'll all live happily ever after" attitude is so naive that it's a bit annoying.

So, what other characters can you think of who you know mean well, but wind up just annoying the hell out of you?

Every single "I must never kill! (Even though I'm in an action series with death all around me)" character ever.

And Lala in To Love-Ru, though I guess I can't say "annoys the hell out of me". And I only mention her because it's a currently running show so she's on my mind.

P.S. ::insert obligatory SUZAKU MUST DIE comment::

The prime example would be Shirou Emiya from Fate/Stay night. While he has the best of intentions, he's just so headstrong and stupid and annoying.

My main issue with him was the way he was so ****ing full of himself and was essentially acting like he was the only capable person in the entire universe. Which if you consider things is kind of silly.

Another example from a show I'm only starting to get into would be Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass.

Honestly I'm not ready to hate him yet. Granted yes his method is akin to a pipe dream. However in some ways he makes a decent contrast to Lelouch. In part because in some ways Suzaku's path can be considered the more challenging one and Suzaku can't rely on "that" to help him. Then again it can be argued that both paths have their easier and harder aspects.

Speaking of Lelouch, I should note I'm probably one of the few watching Code Geass that doesn't want to make love to him. I mean some elements of his character interest me, but as a whole I don't find myself caring that much for him yet. Something about him bothers me quite a bit and I need to figure out what it is.

So, what other characters can you think of who you know mean well, but wind up just annoying the hell out of you?

Oh let me think here. Well one character that's currently frustrating me is Arusu of "Tweeny Witches". Honestly the girl needs to grow up and realize that hiding behind ideals won't solve everything. Okay given that she's the lead girl she likely has the advantage of the plot working in her favor.. Even so it's frustrating the problems her attitude has caused.

Speaking of which my favorite scenario is "If you spare that person, I'll give you this item. The item you will use to destroy the entire universe thus killing the said person by default anyway" Uh can someone please run that by me again?

So far she's definitely annoying me, but then again I'm not sure I can count her. Simply because I'm having a hard time believing that she actually means well... Well well for anyone, but herself. Yeah I'm quite bitter about certain things.

P.S. ::insert obligatory SUZAKU MUST DIE comment::

I guess the further I get in Code Geass the more I'll come to understand the Lelouch worship and the Suzaku hatred. Not sure if I'll agree or disagree through. Oh wait let me guess. Lelouch forced people to be part of his fanclub.:P

Umm……well  I don't really have any particular affection for him myself. My attention so far has been taken up by the ladies. Especially Kallen and C.C. at this point.

But if Suzaku is going to get more annoying, now I am prepared.

Sometimes I pay so much attention to the girls of a show I sometimes forget the guys exist.

Hmm, I'd have to go with Skuld from AMG. Yeah I know some will come after me with red and white pitch forks, but maybe it's because I'm more interested in the Belldandy x Keichii dynamic, but I guess shes destined to be an immortal cock blocker. Adult Skuld in one of the DVD only episode is much more to my liking personality wise.

I know most people might say the whole crew of the Infinite Ryvius, but to single out a couple - Houjou and Charlie. Juli is a close second.

^^^^THIS!

Emiya annoyed the hell out of me. Especially with how overprotective he was over Saber, it bugged me, most noticably when he said "I would rather fight than see a girl get hurt". She's the spiritual manifestation of Arthurian legend, I think she can handle herself. My favorite part of the damn series was when Archer told him off, and clearly stated that he wanted to kill him (Archer=badass).

However, all of the other characters (especially Rin, Archer, and Saber) were so incredible awesome that the blotted out the smudge that was mister Emiya, so I guess it worked itself out in the end!

Saya in Blood +. I'm glad this series aired on TV, so I know not to spend the money buying it. :p

She just seemed to spend the entire series being completely clueless. I'm thinking specifically about where Amshell was disguised as a woman in the Russia arc (if I remember correctly). Bad guy shows up, bad guy makes speech, Saya believes bad guy & questions whatever she believed up until then. BAH!

I considered the whole series a letdown, especially after loving the movie. But Saya as a character was just terrible the whole way through. Which was very difficult for me to deal with, as I am a slobbering Kari Wahlgren fanboy.

Every single "I must never kill! (Even though I'm in an action series with death all around me)" character ever.

Amen to that. My only exception to this rule would be Vash from Trigun, because he was done right. Although at a certain point late in the series, I wish he'd toughened up a bit and taken a clue from Wolfwood. But I still love him and that series to death.

Kouji Aiba from Mugen no (Infinite) Ryvius. Because no matter what suggestion anyone came up with, it was never f*cking good enough; this little twerp always had an objection, and occasionally worked counter-point. I hated this little bastard, and that's saying something, because I hated just about everyone in that cast, but Kouji was a stand-out.

Ai Tanabe from Planetes annoyed the hell out of me A LOT in the first episode because of her "love and peace" nonsense and her practically sabotaging an important mission. I wasn't a fan of her at all for at least 8 episodes, then I had a complete 180 and started really liking her (and conversely, hating Hachimaki by the end of the series where I liked him before). I guess she was just too much to handle up front.

I also despise Miaka from Fushigi Yugi. Here's why:

(About 15 times over the course of the series) - Tamahome to Miaka, "Okay Miaka, stay here and you'll be safe. I'll come back in a bit after I'm done dealing with Bad Guy X".

Miaka: Okay.

Tamahome leaves.

Miaka: Convinces herself that leaving is a good idea for some retarded reason.

Bad Guy Y: "Haha! I've caught you, Miaka!"

Miaka: "Oh noes!"

Bad Guy Y: Well, now that I've caught you, I'll probably r*pe you. But I'm going to go into some exposition first. So just sit there, naked and unresisting, if you don't mind."

Miaka: "Okay!"

Exposition ends.

Bad Guy Y: Well, enough of that. Oh, you're still here, when you totally could have escaped? Guess it's r*pe time!

Miaka: "Oh noes! Well, I could fight back, but I'm just gonna accept my fate. Besides, you're kinda cute..."

Tamahome: "Miaka! I'll save you!"

Miaka: "Yay! I know this whole situation was my fault, and I probably could have gotten away, or put up a fight, but whatever. Thank God for Deus Ex Machina, amirite?!"

Note: I had to put the *s in there because the internet filter at work won't let me post that word...hehe.

The big thing for me was when she is dragging Claire at the end and his this sort of epithany in that it really wasn't her pushing Hachi, it was his drive for space. That and she pretty much has a mental breakdown(I can't blame her), but just this flooding realization when you see her in a wheel chair makes you weak in the knees.

The Lelouch worship will never make sense. The guy is the worst type of hypocrite.

But you need look no further than the holy trinity of shonen for these type of characters. Naruto, Luffy and Ichigo epitomizes this.

As for my pick - Yamato, Kira. Along with practically everyone else affiliated with him.

For me, it would have to be May Wong from Kaleido Star.
Granted, she got more tolerable towards the end of the series but I was too annoyed by her earlier stunts to really give a care ^_^;

the princess in Aura Battler Dunbine: good lord, how many times did she try to escape, only to get re-captured for her stupidity? 3? 5? all the while ruining the plans of everyone else and putting them in even greater danger. i swear everytime she appeared i screen i had to restrain myself from backhanding it.

yes! i would put her as the main blemish in New Wings, she completely sucked the enthusiasm away with her constant "i can do it better!" schemes. especially when she followed Sora all the way to Vegas to see Layla. massive rolleyes at that point.

and another vote to Shirou from F/SN

I'd have to say Hare from Hare+Guu got on my nerves a bit. Sure he's the underdog, Guu puts him through all sorts of hell, and I do feel sorry for him most of the time. But his outbursts do grate after a while.
I could probably say the same of Sakura from Dokuro-chan too, but you can't help but pity someone who gets casually dsimembered every few minutes. Poor guy. :)

Shirou didn't bother me so much, mainly becuase he did grow up a bit over the series. And I got a kick out of Archer [Archer identity spoilers!] coming back to knock some sense into his younger self.

Watanuki from XXXholic really needs to calm down! I can take him for a while, but....

I thought Mepple and Mipple of Pretty Cure were annoying, but then Porun came along and took it up a notch. I thought Porun was insufferable, but now Lulun has come along to take it up another notch. I shudder at whatever might be coming next. I seriously wish the show would drop the whole magical girl thing and convert to a lacrosse sports anime. I even say this as a magical girl fan and a not-fan of sports anime!

Camille Bidan & Fa in Zeta Gundam. Both deserve one another & I couldn't really warm to either.

Mrs Ichinose in Maison Ikkoku.

Hikaru in Kimagure Orange Road & Ibuki in MI.

Tina in Ai Yori Aoshi

Yorika in You're Under Arrest

Skuld in Oh! My Goddess

Pacifica in Scrapped Princess

Vash is the reason I began to hate this type of character in the first place. He's also the reason I've had no desire to rewatch Trigun (and am glad I saw someone else's DVDs of it rather than having bought it myself). I mean, overall it is a good show, but Vash drove me insane. Kenshin, however, didn't annoy me nearly as much. I actually quite liked him, most of the time anyway.

I highly doubt he's condoning rape :sd: , but rather saying that it's annoying how she does things that get her into bad situations and thus makes trouble for those who have to save her.

*Note: I have not seen FY and can neither confirm nor deny that that reading of her character is accurate.

I'm not going the "she was asking to be raped" route either, but like Captain Impulse says, Miaka repeatedly ignores reasonable advice and finds herself in those situations as a result. She didn't "bring it on herself," but she didn't do everything possible to prevent it, either.

Thats not the point of this thread though. I rather agree that from a completely objective viewpoint, he's a great character (for the show). But He drives me nuts.

On the other hand, I personally don't get all the people who hate Nina.

Yes, she's a racist, psychopathic, hypocritical, raging lesbian bitch....but god dammit thats an awesome combination of character traits. Every single moment she's on screen after the "table" incident is pure gold.

Man, he has this repeatative (and annoying) attitude of "I don't want to be a part of this fiasco". Even though he already knows the predicament he's in. I could just smack'em one and bring him back to reality.

I like the way you think.

As for Suzaku, I have some issues with him and his way of doing things, but I think he's a good character and he doesn't annoy me at all.

Of the character's listed in this thread so far, Emiya Shirou is the only one that ever annoyed me much. I guess Miaka annoyed me at times but not to the extent she seems to bother others. Mainly, I just found Miaka a rather dull character. Then again, my opinion is based mainly on the manga as I lost interest in the anime around the half way point (having already read the manga, the anime wasn't entertaining me enough to justify continuing when I had so many other things to watch).

In general, I'm not fond of the whole "I refuse to kill thing" because it generally just isn't done well. The characters spout their idealism but it ends up being just obnoxious. Vash bugged me a bit with this but less so than some others. It didn't bother me in Kenshin for some reason; I think Rurouni Kenshin just did a better job of handling it than just about any other series with such characters.

There is one character, however, that springs to mind for this topic. I had an inexplicable hatred for Nagisa (from Strawberry Panic). While she wasn't exactly my ideal main character type (an airheaded genki girl), I simply can't explain why she annoyed me so much that she inspired such a reaction from me.

She committed the sin of being boring in a show that thrived on the cast being completely insane.

She wasn't even normal, just...boring.
