View Full Version : Queen's Blade gets an anime!
Man, I love these series of character books even if they're shameless fanservice at times. ANN has this:
The promotional sleeve wrapper on the Queen's Blade (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10086): Ōma no Jo-ō Arudora and Sentō Kyōkan Arein books (on sale on June 20) will announce that a television anime has been green-lit for the Queen's Blade combat picture book game series. Queen's Blade is Hobby Japan (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=2441)'s Japanese spinoff from Flying Buffalo's Lost Worlds game series. In combat picture book games, players simulate turn-based fighting with books that each represent a character. For example, the two books above represent the twilight queen Arudora and the fighting instructor Arein.
I only hope that they use all the characters in the series, especially Cattleya among others ;).
TRPG has some basic info on the books themselves along with some character pictures:
Queen's Blade is called "Visual Book for Duel." It is based on the Lost Worlds Combat Picture Books, the classic game book for duel.
In this game, each player uses one beautiful fighter (for one book) to duel with another player. The combination of each player's choice of offenses and defenses then leads to the character being in a state of, for example, falling down, being wounded, having armor broken, etc (each state has an artistic page in the character book), and the repetition of these decides a winner, by accumulated wounds.
According to HobbyJapan (http://hiki.trpg.net/en/?HobbyJapan), Queen's Blade has compatibility with Lost Worlds Books and can have a duel with them. Data of Queen's Blade is made by Flying Buffalo Inc. which has license of the Lost Worlds.

You can always make up some BS "fantasy story" to use all the lusciously designed characters in one episode or another. Merchandising has already been strong with drama CD's, figures, and books. The key thing will be to see how handles the animation with all these slickly designed female characters running about.

Reina loses her armor chest piece and they need to hunt for it. Shamelessly blatant service follows.

Hopefully the series will be nice and ecchi, just like the art I see floating around.

My favorite is Nanael(le), the one with the short blue hair. Although I'm unsure why in the pics, she has a bottle of milk with her.

Been expecting this to come around at some point. Pretty happy about it too. I wouldn't mind if it turned out to be like the KoF anime that was just a few minute long fights. I think it'd be awesome if it turned out to be something like that (of course fanservice riddled). Hopefully they use the voices from the 2 drama CD's, which would have Noto Mamiko as Tomoe, and Yuko Goto as Menace.

Probably the same people who bought the books to play the multiplayer game the books are supposed to be used for, rather than the one player game they're actually used for...;)

I have seen couple of figures for QB and they looked very nice and some were....well a bit....
As for the anime as long as it is well done in terms of character designs and animenation then i'll be happy. I don't think that there is much to offer for the story/plot but if they come up with something decent it would surly be a plus. But then again many other similar titles have a weak story/plot yet they're selling fine

All I can say is, they better not water down the character designs/outfits.

<SNORK!>
Wow, I'd had no idea that THIS was the pedigree for Queen's Blade! I remember seeing the kanji-only pages linked to on FBI's stuff for Lost Worlds, but didn't pay THAT much attention to them...
The series is still a little overboobed for my tastes, but I'm a little more intrigued and amused now.
Secondary question : after Lodoss War, this makes the second anime I know of that's based on an RPG or similar. Are there any other series that were based on RPGs? (Aside from Wizardry!, that is.)

Something that I don't quite understand yet is why Flying Buffalo has not brought the franchise to America?
I'm sure they will sell pretty well, considering that many of us have bought the books from Japan, and a translated version of them will generate a wider fan-base.
For example, after buying mine, some of my friends have asked me to import the gamebooks for them, and nobody of them knows the rules of the game, even less know to read Japanese

You can buy them at the regular slew of US and Japanese based shops if you want to actively seek them out. Most will gravitate towards them for the art and character designs rather then the game itself.

Well, you can buy them here (http://www.flyingbuffalo.com/japanlw.htm) (and the newer series of Queen's Gate books here (http://www.flyingbuffalo.com/queensgate.htm)), but I suspect that Loomis feels he has his hands full supporting his games and so doesn't feel like supporting a full new fandom outside of the games.
The official TV site is up, not much to look at aside from the regular novel designs.

Long story short, the seiyuu cast has been announced for this anime adaptation of this figure line. Found the list in a scan of the January issue of Hobby Japan.

Former seiyuu and current gravure idol Hirano Aya (Nanael)- Haruhi Suzumiya in do I really have to say it, Ayumi Nonomura in Hyakko

It's a rule now that MaMIKO must voice at least one miko character per calendar year.
And yeah, every single one of those seiyuu is amazing. Every single one. This will be another show I'll watch almost entirely for the voice cast, like Akane-iro.

Ah, thanks. I think I asked earlier in the thread...anyway, I've taken a liking to the character, especially after all the ecchi shots I saw of her on moe imouto. I'm rooting for her.
Busty girls + busty girls beating the shit out each other + all star seriyuu cast x possible yuri = WIN.

I can't say I'm expecting much from this series and some of those character designs are.... ugh. Though at least the ones they've announced seiyu for are mostly okay. I don't think I'm going to be able to take Melona remotely seriously though. Hopefully the show is one that won't really need me to.
That said, the voice cast is indeed epic. Mamiko Noto, Rie Kugimiya, and Yuko Goto all in one series along with a number of other very strong seiyu. Definitely worth checking out for the voice cast alone.

Yeah, for a series that exists primarily as character art, there are some iffy designs.
My favorites by far of the cast characters are Tomoe, Nanael, and Airi. Miko, angel and maid. The others... they range from bad to okay. I'm hoping they all make the transition to anime with improvements.

As far as shrine maidens go, I'm not impressed with Tomoe's design. It's okay. Nothing more or less.
I think I like Nanael's design, but I'm not fond of the pose and focus they picked for the site. I'm hoping the anime avoids crap like that, but I expect they will indulge in it and that's one of my biggest concerns with the series.
Menace is almost okay aside from the retarded pose they have for her on the site. She's Yuuko Goto's character, so I'm hoping I'll like her.
Airi is my favorite of the characters they've announced seiyuu for and easily stands above the rest on that little list. Maid outfits do nothing for me, but it works pretty well for her. Reina and Erina's designs are decent and I kind of like them. Sadly, most of the other characters with designs I actually like don't have seiyuu announced. I'd like to see little girl with the giant axe, for example.

Far as I know, Queen's Blade exists purely for fanservice, so I kind of expect the anime will do the same. Is there actually a central story to Queen's Blade to draw on?

It's all about how they do it though, and most anime fail pretty hard when it comes to making panty shots work. When panties become to focus, things tend to get awkward, with weird angles and positions to get teh pantsu. And its often overplayed and not at all sexy. Maybe Queen's Blade will do it right or at least not badly, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm going to have to hope there are enough other kinds of fanservice or humorous aspects to keep me interested, as I'm not exactly expecting much from the plot either.

I don't know, but I'm not under the impression it has much in that department. Maybe the anime will be different? One can hope, I guess.

That's a severe understatement, here's hoping the adaptation can improve things. Truth be told I'm not sure if there are any designs I actually like from that list. I think the problem may be the art style though... It seems like the only thing the artist was thinking was "Slutty as possible is good enough" for a lot of those designs.
That said, the voice cast is indeed epic. Mamiko Noto, Rie Kugimiya, and Yuko Goto all in one series along with a number of other very strong seiyu. Definitely worth checking out for the voice cast alone.
Perhaps, but if this the designs remain that ugly, I might be better of treating it as a drama CD. I get the feeling I might be the wrong audience for this show. Thus depending on how things develop between now and when the show starts airing there's a chance I might just pass on trying the series.
