All right then I'm making a thread for Macross 7 because I just finished it and would like to talk about it more detail than is appropriate for the currently watching thread. Also maybe I'll actually comment on the OVA episodes properly in the future. I'll see how that goes. Either way this should give people a chance to comment on Macross 7 without drifting the "Frontier" thread too much. In any case thoughts will come in a reply to avoid spoilers in the main post.

Having not seen it--apart from long ago seeing the ghastly 30 minute "movie" with the musical duel in conflicting keys (Ow! Owowowow!!)-- do they really pilot their robots by playing rock instruments? Because this strikes me as quite possibly the silliest, most unworkable idea ever.

Macross 7 is the type of series where on one hand you're thinking "This is just completely inane" and yet you're enjoying it regardless or maybe because of that. The early episodes honestly weren't much. However things definitely picked up near the end of the second cour and quite a bit seems to happen. Characters definitely developed and changed over time. Some such as Gigil were quite surprising. Also Sivil is wow in multiple ways. In some ways Basara's dedication to his ways was both frustrating and impressive. In the end it ultimately achieved the goal of defeatng the enemy by giving them a new path at life
The singing aspect of the series was pretty good. Quite a variety of songs and most of the time sung pretty well. Plus it was kind of fun to have multiple songs in the same episode. Heck I believe in some cases two different songs were playing at the same time. Still maybe that's why the inaneness was enjoyable. It gave an excuse for there to be more singing. An excuse I can easily accept because it has benefits.
It goes without saying that my favorite character in the series is Mylene. I rather liked her from the start and even at the end I still liked her. Maybe I should eliminate both Gamlin and Basara. *Is feeling delusional and evil* Regardless she was just one of many interesting characters in what was a surprisingly addictive series. Although to be honest given how I rush through the series, I'll probably take a break before watching the OVA and whatever else I need to work on.
On a side note the parts of the series where they referenced "Lynn Minmei" has made me want to experience her directly even more. Yeah I know many hate her for whatever reason, but then again considering the hatred for some characters I love. All I know is she looks rather pretty in those scenes.
Finally maybe this isn't as spoiler filled as I figured it would be. However it's best to be on the safe side and allows future replies to this sub thread to be more free flowing be it by me or others.

More or less yes. Well at least in the case of the lead character Basara. Regardless as for it working, funny thing is after awhile I simply accepted it. Make of that what you will.

You totally didn't just say that seeing Basara and Emilia dueling was bad, did you?
Because that was epic.
(also only Sound Force uses "instruments" to pilot, and really they are just highly modified control sticks)

Also I forgot to mention this. Fangirl is lovely. She deserves her own series or at least a larger role. I kept hoping that she'd get more involved in the series. It was like the cruelest tease ever done in anime history. Ah well can't have everything.

She's officially known as "flower girl", but yes, she's love.

Believe me the hate is justified (even if you like her you should still realize why she gets so much hate) and the addition of a vastly superior female character in Misa Hayase just makes it worse. Do You Remember Love Minmei was such an improvement over Macross TV Minmei that it's not funny. Thankfully Ranka has avoiding the failings of Minmei though I think the end result will be the same in Frontier.
But Max and Millia are the two best characters in Macross and you've already experienced them! And oh yeah make sure to watch Flashback 2012 after the original especially if you like Minmei's music.

Heh. Maybe if the songs had been in harmonious keys, but it was epic cacophony in practice.
But I did get a kick out of it later when she, unminiaturized, started flirting with him.

Crazy! Crazy! Possibly epic crazy, but still crazy.

Ah of course "flower girl", it should have been so obvious.

Come on, they just met. Having them play songs neither had ever heard before in harmony with each other would have been ridiculous.
Oh wait, Macross 7 lol

Well hate being justified is a subjective thing since after all what makes people hate or even love a character varies person by person. Still my point was mainly to make it clear I've already heard of the dislike and that sometimes I end up disagreeing. So it can go either way. As for Misa Hayase being better. All I say is her design is kind of simple, but nice. Maybe I'll end up liking both?
Do You Remember Love Minmei was such an improvement over Macross TV Minmei that it's not funny. Thankfully Ranka has avoiding the failings of Minmei though I think the end result will be the same in Frontier.
I don't know about Ranka compared to Minmei, but Ranka is a major reason I decided to watch Frontier in the first place. I blame her for the fact I ended up watching Zero then Seven and may even buy Macross once a collection of the TV comes out. Let's just say I'll be extra obligated to. If nothing else buying the TV series would be like a way of giving some support to the series while waiting for certain parts to be licensed.

Ah yes those two were quite awesome and it will be curious to see how they got to that point eventually. Hmm as for Flashback 2012, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Their "courtship" is utterly hilarious and preposterous but it's so Macross.

It's always interesting when part of a show makes people go "It's so <insert name of series here>".

Ah so an episode involving the past of Firebomber? Although I get the feeling some of it is questionable. Heh kind of fun to have two (of the) bridge bunnies watch the 'special'. *Watches preview* I guess that means a Mylene focus.

Ah nothing like life expectancy worries to give us a silly episode. Still I wouldn't mind being engaged to Miho Miho. There's a name for you. Either way it was nice to get some Mylene focus.

All right then the main thing I'll say about this is thanks to timing I was able to recognize the song that Mylene was singing. Yeah I remember.... no wait I'm not making that pun. Still got to love how Exodore purposely missed like that.:)

Well some of the events (like the Proto Devlin and Sound Force already established) in this episode gives somewhat of an indication as to when this takes place. In any case I should have figured that girl would turn out to be Mylene's sister. Regardless that was uh interesting duet. All right now to Macross 7 Dynamite. Yes I'm making real progress in this.

Always thought of Basara as "What if Minmei had been played by U2's Bono?"--
Dear Beldandi, what an instantly unsympathetic lead hero... >_<

No idea about that since I'm not familiar with U2 as in I haven't listened to anything from them. Although I do wonder it would have been like if instead of hearing Minmei's song(s) the Zentradi instead heard ultra-violent songs with highly offensive lyrics. Then again maybe I don't want to know.

Okay let's see here now. Poachers, Spaces Whales, etc. Okay not exactly the most epic thing to base a story on. However since Elma has awesome hair and is quite cute, I have reason to finish watching the OVA. Plus it had a hotsprings scene. So it has something going for it. Still poor Mylene. Also it's kind of funny to see Basara essentially in a daze for most of the second episode. All right time for 3-4.

I'd say as a whole the OVA was decent, but not that great. In some ways it felt like an extended single episode. That being said you've got to love the fun of cardboard cut outs as stand ins.

I enjoyed Dynamite for its nice visuals and story. Even though the ending was extremely easy to guess, it was the ending I kinda wanted.
I've been a Macross fan since the original airings of Robotech, so I have very mixed feelings about Macross 7 TV. I like it as its own show, but not as a Macross sequel. The ending was hysterical, and pitch-perfect for what the show was. I was thinking...no, they wouldn't...oh my, they might...they are!!! And I finished it with a big smile on my face. But as an old-school Macross fan, though, everything from the introduction of Sound Force forward injected a higher level of goofiness than I was willing to tolerate in my beloved Macross universe.
I haven't been able to see more than a few minutes of Frontier yet, but at least the aliens there don't seem to look like Sailor Moon villains. Yet.
