YAYYYYYYYYYY!
Second season of Ef to be made. I love the first show so here's hoping for more Ef~ goodness.
Kurogane's Anime Blog (http://kurogane.animeblogger.net/2008/06/27/ef-a-tale-of-melodies-announced/):
Yes! A new season of the ef anime was announced earlier on Moonphase (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/20080627#p3) (Moetron here (http://www.moetron.com/2008/06/27/ef-a-tale-of-memories-season-2-announced) provides the english).
In summary, the same staff will be working on the new series, and the story will predictably about Mizuki and Yuuko as the main focus. Which is good, because ever since seeing that “oh-mein-eyes-this-is-so-fucking-incredibly-beautiful” opening animation for ef ~the latter tale~, I’ve gotten extremely interested in to Yuuko’s story.

Ah this is great news, having more of the stories told. Still I was hoping this would also include Kei. Wasn't there a storyline where Kei was the main focus rather than in a supporting role?

While the first series stood perfectly well by itself, I'll never ever say no to ef <3
Very much looking forward to this, and to seeing more of these two interesting characters who didn't get focused on in the first season.

The first series rocketed to become one of my new absolute favorites. While the first series stood quite well on its own, I did want to see some of the other characters stories. And I want to know what's up with the enigmatic nun lady (Yuko, I think).
Edit: Following the links, it seems that Mizuki and Yuko will likely be the main characters.
So this announcement makes me giddy.

My copy of ef - the later tale is still unopened. ;_; Well, it was bound to happen at some point. Might as well buckle down and prepare to get the R2s. Not that I've watched the first anime yet.

I'm hoping we'll see a bit of Kei and her relationship with camera dude as well. But since she was one of the main characters in the first season, I didn't really expect her to be one of the stories in a sequel though I certainly wouldn't have minded it.
But I can only go by what the links said and it specifically said Mizuki and Yuko and nothing of Kei. But note that it said "most likely" so its not guaranteed just yet. These assertions may just be based on what the other games covered. I believe the anime aired before the game for Chihiro came out, so I expect the anime was not the same as the game. Its entirely possible Melodies will not cover the same material from the games.
Edit: Okay, it seems that covering Kei is quite possible. I hope they do. Hopefully they'll find a way to cover Kei, Mizuki AND Yuko in Melodies.

First of all great to see more ef Anime coming, though out of all the Bishoujo Soft x Anime adaption/conversions announcements a second season for this project is certainly the less surprising one (given minori really sticked to "two" in almost each and every possible regard when it comes to the "fairy tale of the two." ^_~)
What about Kei?
If the Anime staff is likely continuing the same way as they did with a tale of memories. then I assume we're going to see the 2nd chapter of ef (Shindou Kei's chapter) adapted the very same way they did with mixing the first chapter (= Miyako's) together with the *now* known as third (Chihiro). In fact bits and pieces of Kei's story have already been featured within a tale of memories. so it shouldn't really turn out to be a big problem for Shaft to get a tale of melodies. done in the same way (at the same episode ratio).
That said at *last* my copy of the latter tale. is about to be shipped and hopefully clearing through customs and showing up here within the next week >_<

Something nice to look forward to as the original series was superbly executed (someone license this one already!). I'm in agreement with what others have said about Kei.
Woo Hoo!
I loved the first season, incredibly well done by SHAFT even if they did go a little overboard with some of the effects. The original Ef was a Rondo Robe show, so hopefully this means Geneon isn't dead yet :)

...Geneon Japan is alive and well, has been this entire time. Its only Geneon USA that was shut down.

Yeah, I know. But with all of the hub bub about Geneon possibly coming back and a new Ef coming, I'm a little optimistic.

...? I....I can't even fathom how those two tidbits of information are at all related.
I mean, I'd love to see Geneon back as well, but the making of a new ef series is so incredibly not relevant to that that I don't even get where you are coming from.

Actually, excising Kei's chapter might make sense (they already gave the character some closure anyway, even if a full story was never developed).
Supposedly, the Mizuki and Yuuko scenarios are fairly meaty and tightly intertwined, which makes it challenging to integrate Kei's independent story. Some game players already note that Chihiro doesn't fit with the rest of The Latter Tale, so the anime team might want to avoid that kind of composition quirk.

Actually in a sense I did feel memories was incomplete, but that's less because of the way the show itself went. It's more due to already knowing memories was only focusing a fraction of the total tales. Okay maybe incomplete isn't the right word here.

More of being hopefully it'll get licensed. Aside from something like "This Ugly and Beautiful World" Ef is in the sole domain of Geneon. So the only real way we'd see it R1 wise is for Geneon themselves to come back.Actually, excising Kei's chapter might make sense (they already gave the character some closure anyway, even if a full story was never developed).

Chihiro made the first season for me. Often times you hear about "moe" and see people devoted to characters, Chihiro was all of that with her voice, attitude, and looks ;).

I wouldn't be so quick to assume Geneon is or rather was the only chance for ef to be licensed. Things aren't always so set in stone.

Yeah, I don't know what else there was to Kei's chapter in the games, but I think she was handled superbly in the ef ~a tale of memories~ anime, and I can't really think of much more I would like to see involving her directly that we haven't already. I felt the closure on her was very well executed.

I wonder who people are more excited about, Yuuko or Mizuki? I'm guessing Yuuko because she's very mysterious and seems to be the one common thread throughout everything, but somehow I find myself really, really wanting to see what's up with Mizuki. She's so fun and carefree in the first season hat it'll be very interesting to see a more dramatic side to her story in melodies.

Oh thats one thing I've learned with the R1 industry a long time ago. I'd love for Ef to get picked up by someone else, but no one really seems in the best shape to do so. It really isn't Bandai's type of show, ADV isn't in a position to do much, and who knows about Funi.

Well, Media Blasters has gone after some Geneon Japan shows.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that there are Rondo Robe shows released in R1 by people other than Geneon. Not the ef is especially likely to get licensed or anything.

I'm curious what's up with Yuuko because she's such an enigma and she kept randomly popping up at convenient times to offer profound advice. But while I'm curious about that, I'm more interested in Mizuki. As you said, she's just a fun character. So seeing more of her, both in carefree and in more dramatic situations, would please me.

This fall, huh?
The world is a beautiful place.
ETA: For the record, Mizuki is by far my favorite girl in both games, and it's not like I don't care for the rest. Mizuki just owns them about a billion times over.

Awesome! Really looking forward to this since Mizuki was pretty awesome in her short amount of time she had in the first season and it will be nice to see what's up with the Yu and Yuuko situation. Kei had her time though I expect they'll throw in some stuff for her somewhere in their and probably a cameo or two of Hiro and Miya.
Fall 08 keeps getting better and better.

The one track that "got me into Ef" was the driving piano then violin track from the game. Plus it has beautiful animation from you know who :nosebleed:. The promo video (http://www.moetron.com/2008/06/27/ef-a-tale-of-memories-season-2-announced) looks pretty nice.

If I could have wished for one thing from the anime industry, this would have been it.
Given that the same staff are returning, and that the PV is entirely awesome and the website music as sublime as Tenmon's previous offerings, I have little doubt that a tale of melodies will be another masterpiece.
I'd better start saving for the R2 DVDs (and CDs) I guess. :sd:

The music on the site is awesome! The trailer is definitely nice as well. Yet another reason for me to look forward to Fall. *Watches trailer again* Ah nice so around 16-17 seconds we get Kei fanservice. It may not mean much, but it's still 2 seconds of Kei. Unless I'm getting her mixed up with another girl. Can't be Chihiro due to the lack of an eye patch.
In any case it eventually made sense why the first season was memories. Now it's just a matter of finding out why the second season is melodies. Although I'm sure some probably already have a good idea as to why that probably.

It's not Kei, that's Hiro's sister, Hirono Nagi and as another poster pointed out it seems he took part of his pen name from her.

Ah didn't know Hiro has a sister, but even so she still reminds me of the twins. Maybe it's the generic short hair thing. Along with the lighting of the scene. Okay fine then Nagi fanservice is good.

You're right, Shindou Nagi - Hiro's Shoujo Manga-ka penname is actually a combination of his sis' and the family name of Kei (and Chihiro). Not sure wether this was dropped within a tale of memories. but I seem to remember that Kei merely called him by his penname in the early episodes (with Hiro embarrased about her doing so in public/at school) but no explanation dropped in the Anime unlike it's been done through the first tale. early on.

In any case, more ef is definitely a plus. I was completely enthralled with the series for most of its run, and now that a sequel is confirmed, I'm feeling pretty ecstatic right now. I know I'll definitely be tuning in this October.
And here's hoping that Elisa gets to sing the Opening Theme for a tale of melodies, as well. It's been several months since a tale of memories, and I'm still playing both versions of Euphoric Field rather constantly on my computer and mp3 player. I've fallen victim to that beautiful voice of hers. Hell, her song for Nabari no Ou (Hikari) is the only reason why I want to start watching it (well, other than Raimei)!

From that forum.
After reading Oonuma Shin comment in the latest Megami, seems like apart from focusing on Yuuko and Mizuki stories, Hiro and Miyako will also make some appearance as well. Oonuma said it as "their story afterwards" and it will affect the stories in a tale of melodies.
He didn't said anything about Chihiro or Kei, though.
Happy to hear that we'll get some HiroHiro and MiyaMiya cameos, I rewatched every scene they had from 6-10 yesterday and damn it was good stuff.
