I just picked up Hunter X Hunter 21 today at borders and noticed something odd, one two separate occasions, there are scene of violence censored by a darkening of the area. The first "edit" occurs after a man is brutalized by one of the Chimera Ants, the other is when a few fingers are held in the hand of another.
They strike me as odd, because earlier scenes of brutality toward the Chimera ants is left on display (including one that was disembowled), yet the violence to humans is censored. Is this viz's doing or part of the original GNs?

I'm not entirely sure about v21, but stuff like that happens in the original versions of later volumes as well.

Flipping through, page 90 of the Japanese edition has one of those.
As does 108, for the fingers. They're from the original. Man, they really look terrible. Wonder what they were thinking...

It's nice, yet terrible at the same time to know it's in the original...
Nice that Viz isn't editing Hunter X Hunter, but unsettling to know that they're trying this half assed censor in japan, I mean Hunter X Hunter has had way worse, in the same book even.

I didn't even realize they censored the manga...

I thought it was because Togashi was (still is?) so sick so he just didn't couldn't draw if his life depended on him.

I was under the impression that Togashi was doing it himself because he wanted to emulate the look of a certain other gory manga.
