View Full Version : The Class Rep

In an ongoing effort to lay bare all of my fetishes, I have to admit I find the class rep stereotype very enjoyable. Studious, efficient and don't suffer fools lightly. But what they're like on the inside is much different. They just want to be loved, usually by the main character who always goes for other girl. Of course they don't always have to be the class rep. Just a no-nonsense girl with a heart full of love. Takako Ayase from Midori Days, Yuriko Amemiya from Nanaka 6/17, Fumitsuki Nanakorobi from Happy Lesson and Neneko Izumi from DearS are some great examples. Not only are they excellent characters, but they're my favorite characters from their respective shows. They are always the most complex and fascinating characters in the show which makes them more enjoyable to watch. I guess they're really just a subset of the tsundere, but it's what I like.

If someone creates a show with a tsundere class rep with dark skin and light hair and she wears long stockings and short skirts, I'm in trouble.

Hmm, that's not a bad idea... seems like it'd be a good character...

Iinchou types are great. One recent example of a character who helped carry me through a show with mediocre leads was Asahina Akane from Kanokon. No thighhighs, but she does wear glasses and is in some ways tsundere. Actually, weird, none of the Kanokon girls wear thighhighs.

Kotegawa Yui from To Love-Ru is another good recent class rep but goddamn she needs a lot more screen time.

I also like the less aggressive/serious iinchou types, like Komaki Manaka from To Heart 2 (god she is criminally hot). They definitely don't have to be tsundere. Heck there's also Mihama Chiyo from Azumanga Daioh (she was made rep, right?) :sd: Anyway, Manaka is a nice contrast with To Heart's Hoshina Tomoko.

And then there's the... well how does one even describe Asakura Ryouko from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu? :sd: I suppose her best parts have little to do with her iinchou role.

Anyway I won't even bother to go on because there are too many good ones. It seems more like a bad iinchou is the exception.

I have no idea what "Kimikiss" is.

Kimikiss was a hugely popular dating sim based around a school setting where you have to chose from seven different girls(the standard archetypes). Instead of the usual point and click, you actually got to select what to talk about, ie what you thought the girl wanted to talk about. The unique thing about Kimikiss was that it had voice actor power in Haruna Ikezawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruna_Ikezawa), Rie Tanaka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rie_Tanaka), Ami Koshimizu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ami_Koshimizu), Kaori Mizuhashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaori_Mizuhashi), Ryou Hirohashi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryou_Hirohashi), Mamiko Noto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamiko_Noto), and Mai Nakahara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mai_Nakahara). JC Staff made an anime out of it, it was so so, I got addicted to it heh.

Heres a shot of Megumi from the anime:

Ah yes the class Rep. In some series (when done wrong) she angers me quite a bit. In other series (when done right) she makes me feel for her.

The only one that comes into mind at the moment is Ayaka Yukihiro, from Negima!. From her catfights (well not really) with Asuna to her outrageous affection for Negi, I've really come to appreciate her character recently. Not to mention she's an ojo-sama, to boot.

I also like the less aggressive/serious iinchou types, like Komaki Manaka from To Heart 2 (god she is criminally hot). They definitely don't have to be tsundere.

Ahh, Manaka. She is indeed very pretty, and her type is generally my favourite type in an anime. She's my second favourite girl in To Heart 2. If only Tamaki didn't exist....

(I ultimately succumbed to her awesomeness. (I blame those thigh-highs of hers.) Damn you, Tama-nee. :bowsmiley:)

*Checks out link* Ah so that's the name of the class rep in Doki Doki School Hours. I'd probably remember the name better if they had actually used it... Or maybe they did and I remembering wrong.

Not to mention Shinobu from UY, after the show mercifully freed her from being Ataru's love interest, and let her be the lone Lisa Simpson-like symbol of the struggling "normal" girl. (Or at least as "normal" as could be defined by Tomobiki standards.)

We learn she's not only class rep for 2-4, she's also the official Tomobiki High girls' Representative, when all the other girls' schools meet in secret backroom/coffee-shop political negotiations...

Kotegawa Yui from the To Love-Ru is probably my favorite class rep, thought this is completely based on the manga not the anime since she has a lot more screentime in the manga compared to the anime, especially the last 40 chapters.

All I know of Kimikiss (aside from Lego mentioning it a few times) was a rather bizarre doujin I saw while wandering 'round /m/ which crossed the show with Getter Robo. It was called Gemikiss, and the artist did a pretty good job of emulating Ken Ishikawa's style. Had Getter 1 in a fuku and everything.
It was probably the most warped thing I've ever seen. :)

Aaanyway, I'd have to say my favourite class rep doesn't have any of the aforementioned character traits, unless someone already mentioned 'daft as a brush' and I missed it. Miss Ichijou (Pani Poni Dash) is to put it in technical terms, an odd fish.

Heck there's also Mihama Chiyo from Azumanga Daioh (she was made rep, right?) :sd: .

I thought it was Tomo who took the job? She nominated herself, I believe.

Strangely enough, one of my most favourite Ichijo moments was the "shamisen playing" scene from the Edo period episode. That and the two near-identical occasions where she talked the bancho and the Ichijo Festival out of their belligerent motives... only to talk them back into doing what they were going to do anyway.

Aren't doujins fun? It's your standard school romance show, at least with pretty much no fanservice unless you like ankle shots.

Chiyo was the class rep. One of the episodes (IIRC) does have a scene where Yukari calls for the class rep, Tomo jumps up and raises her hand (with the title 'class representative' appearing over her head), and then the title moves over to Chiyo (who acts very confused because of Tomo's reaction). But then, Tomo did all kinds of crazy things.

Oh yeah, the shamisen scene was nuts. One of my favourite scenes of hers was one from an earlier ep where she's wandering around with this sinister mechanical claw sticking out from her like it's the most normal thing in the world.
Or where she tries to cheer Messousa up by baking him cookies, or making a 'friend' for him. :) (which Lord Cat eats later on!)
And even when she gives any encouraging words, it still comes off like some ominous warning.

Then there's her sister, who's almost as surreal as she is.

I really enjoy the class rep stereotype too, but the one character that fits the class rep role that I like the most is Ayaka Yukihiro of Negima. I find her constant fighting with Asuna to be hilarious. Equally funny is her attraction to Negi, despite his age. She'll pretty much do anything for him. However, deep down inside she is a very good-hearted person, not to mention she's rich and hot.

If part of the class-rep's duties is the "Stand!...Bow!..." announcement, we can hear that's Shinobu--Job's taken.
(FTR, in Lum's old galaxy-school class, strategically shrewd kissup Oyuki was the class rep. Which should surprise no one. :sd: )

Hmm, Yeah.. I'd have to say the majority of class reps do fit into the same category of being Tsundere. There are exceptions (http://www.fudce.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/avatars/izumi-31.jpg) however.

Ayaka Yukihiro is a fun example of taking a class rep to a different level of devotion...

I thought they wound up as co-class reps, at least for one year. (Although for all practical purposes, Chiyo had the job.)

I like the character type except when they're nothing more than a disciplinarian to bother the main character. Conflicted class reps shirking their duties are the best.

Um, no, the camera just panned down to show us for the first time what those bobbing little pigtails at the bottom of the screen were.
You're thinking of the time Tomo came up with a unique solution to keep Chiyo from nodding off to sleep, on vacation. ("Wow, you're mean!")

Then there's the UY time Lil' Lum, Benten, and Oyuki tried dropping a sixteen-ton lead weight over the door onto their robot teacher's head, which was so reinforced he didn't notice it until Oyuki announced "Stand!...Bow!...(*<desk smash!>*)"
