There's one character type I'm gradually warming up to. In these anime, there is a hyperactive girl who is usually up to all kinds of crazy antics. She is basically a walking plot device and without her, the show would be dull and not as lively.

Examples include:
Miu (Strawberry Marshmallow)
Kana Minami (Minami-ke)

These are some of my favorites. While it is very tempting to include Azumanga Daioh's Tomo, I think AZ would still work without her - with Osaka's crazy lines, Kaorin's yuri daydreams, Sakaki and so on.

Who are some of your favorites of this character type?

I disagree on that. I don't think Azumanga Daioh would have worked as well without Tomo's playful teasing or energy,. I rather like Miu and Kana too, though. Don't know why (as it wouldn't seem like hyper girls would be my type), but they make the show fun and end up being pretty interesting. I'll have to see if I can think of some others...

I second the vote for Himeko. The episode with her and the gang on the bus is awesome...

Also Komugi from Soul Taker, who later got her own series! And Arisa from Stellvia

I'd go with Excel in Excel Saga.

I'll throw my hat in with Himeko as well. As an example of the hyper-walking-plot-device there's few better. Perhaps Miu from Strawberry Marshmallow, but I think she's just a bitch most of the time.

It's the balance. Azumanga needs Tomo to balance out the weirdness that we get with Osaka, and the cuteness we get with Chiyo. The same goes for Miu, she is the complete anti-Matsuri, which is why scenes involving the pair work so well.

I'd go with Excel in Excel Saga.

Bingo! Excel Excel's the undisputed queen of hyperactivity, if not plain insanity. As far as I'm concerned, no one else, not even Tomo from Azumanga Daioh comes close, and she's a definite loose cannon. But Excel's a tornado on two legs!

Quite a few of my favourite characters are hyperactive types that aren't quite right in the head, like Excel - dynamo of unfocused energy that is she is - Himeko Katagiri, Poemi Watanabe, Komugi Nakahara and Tomo Takino, to name a few.
I'd probably mention Milk-chan as well, but depending which version of the show you watch, she's either incredibly hyper or so laid back she'd fall over. Either way, she's off her nut.

I dunno, I reckon AzuDai is sort of like a big puzzle, with all the characters being essential pieces that come together to make it all work. Everyone plays off of each other so well. But if you take Tomo out of the picture, what would Yomi do? She's kind of an Ernie Wise to Tomo's Eric Morcambe. :) (the straight man, in other words) Ya can't have one without the other, I think.
