View Full Version : I think that the film Event Horizon was sort of ripped off from the old anime Roots Search

Seriously watch both of them. I swear the guy who wrote / directed Event Horizon must have seen Roots Search..

Well, to be fair, Event Horizon and Roots Search both are essentially 'ghost ship' stories, which have been around forever. They just happen to be set in space and also owe quite a bit to Alien as well. I think that's the bigger connection between the two (much like "Nadia" and "Disney's Atlantis" being similar due to shared source material.)

I think it's more then that. The images burned into the minds of the characters. The woman cutting her wrists in the bathtub, the military guy who left some guy behind to die, dude walking into the airlock like a zombie. Anyways I watched it yesterday and all I could think about was Event Horizon

I remember seeing an online chat with Clive Barker the weekend Event Horizon opened, and he opened with a joke about "...Anything seem slightly familiar, here?"
(Speaking as the author/director of "Hellraiser", you see.)
This reminds me of the Nadia vs Tales of Atlantis thing, same goes for The Lion King and Kimba The White Lion.

A few other people seem to agree with your assessment. Justin sevakis over at Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/buried-treasure/2008-03-20/buried-garbage-roots-search) wrote up a summary and review of ROOTS SEARCH (for his "Buried Garbage" column) and in the forum responses, Event Horizon is mentioned a few times.

yeah I saw that.. I can't believe there was a vinyl soundtrack for that. Imagine trying to find that? Bet it would be impossible to get.
