I'm going to set this off as a counterpoise to this thread: http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=84626 . At the opposite end of one spectrum from the hyper-genki to "merely" genki characters (who are my favorites) are the ones who are low-key to almost no-key. But in a crisis or when otherwise called upon (or when their sense of what's right is offended), look out! (They're probably my next-most favorites -- go figure...)

The ones that come to my mind right off are

Oyuki (Urusei Yatsura)
Ayanami Rei (NGE)
Amano Lu (Miami Guns -- going for a little obscurity here...)
Yuumura Kirika (Noir) and (latest addition for me)
Nagato Yuki (TMOHS)

I know there must be others... Has this character type become pretty commonplace by now?

Fina Shinozaki (Infinite Ryvius)
Kaeda Fuyou (Shuffle!)
Ai Enma (Hell Girl) to some extent. :P
and of course Belldandy (AMG) ;)

So this is a thread for introvered and shy characters, huh?

Heh. So, I read the thread title and immediately though, "Oyuki." Pani Poni Dash's Ichigo also comes to mind.

No, I think your interpertation was wrong. Its not the "shy and quiet ones". It is the Quietly Dangerous Ones. Also, I think you are TOTALLY off your rocker on choosing Rosetta and Leon from Kaleido Star. Did you even watch the second season?? Leon is the most arrogant bastard in anime this side of Gendo Ikari, and Rosetta is fairly full of herself too. Though at least she offers the added attraction of being a Hot Loli.

Most recent I can think of is the bear-demon teacher from Kanokon.
Max Sterling from Robotech. Never talked any smack at all, but when he took the field, someone was getting their ass handed to them.

Maggie from R.O.D The TV is pretty much the definition of this.

Ami/Sailor Mercury & Hotaru/Sailor Saturn in the Sailor Moon series.
Shinobu in Urusei Yatsura
Shizuka in My Hime
Miyuki in You're Under Arrest
Peau in Hyper Police

And so is Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh. Heck, they could be sisters. :)

Nadesico's Ruri Hoshino is my favourite of those quiet deadpan characters, with R. Dorothy Wayneright from the Big O a close second, ("you're such a louse, Roger Smith." - love that line) then followed on by the enigmatic and downright odd Miss Ichijou from Pani Poni Dash.

Oh, and then there's Guu. She's definitely one to watch out for, what with her habit of eating people and all.

Miyuki in You're Under Arrest

I'd wager Aoi would require the most careful attention.

as for others..

I guess if you count alter-egos then Misao (Pretty Sammy) might fit.

for some reason I find Kotone Himekawa (To Heart) a character not to be messed with.

Tsukiko Sagi (Paranoia Agent) evidence by using Maromi as an escape.

Kohaku and Hisui (Tsukihime). That is if Hisui would ever breakdown again and go berserk, which I'm not sure she's capable of doing as long as her twin is by her side. Even then, Hisui is pretty harmless despite her appearance. Kohaku might be a better fit although that contradicts the description. Due to her past, Kohaku puts on a facade, (just as Hisui does to protect her twin) when truthfully there's murderous intent in her.

Eureka - Eureka Seven
Lala-Ru - Now and Then, Here and There
Rico - Gunslinger Girl (This is streching it, but oh well, putting her here)
Kate Ashley - Red Garden (She kicks some...uh...."whatever they are" ass in this show)

I tried to come up with new people that have not been mentioned. Someone already said Rei Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion) , someone else said Class Rep Ichijou (Pani Poni Dash) , someone else said Yuki Nagato (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya), and someone else said Ai Enma (Hell Girl). Those all are people I agree are "quiet" and you should "watch out for", along with the ones I said. By the way, I love the quiet characters, especially when you gata watch out for them! They are even better when they are emotionless!!

How about guys? I say Rock from Black Lagoon. Ok he talks more then these other people, but he still is quiet (when compared to the other people on the Lagoon, especially Revy), and you really got to watch out for this dude.

I'd like to add the name of Ichinose Kotomi from Clannad...she's not only super-smart but also deadly to humans, cats and pigs when armed with a violin. And after watching ep 6 of Strike Witches, Sanya Litvyak with her Friggin Hammer...or something like that

I have one more to add.

Serika Kurusugawa - To Heart

While she doesn't fight anyone, or hurt anyone or anything like that, I'd still watch out for her, because she's pretty deep into the occult and has a really rich father. Don't mess with her. She's very quite 9in fact she whispers moslty) and almost never talks Also she's really cool and cute :nosebleed: , so. Ona side note I also know a girl who only whispers, she doesn't ever talk or yell or anything.

"bear-demon teacher from Kanokon."

he isnt a teacher... he is the student body president :p

at least from my understanding of the show... he wears the school uniform... teachers dont do that.

One who would seem to fit these criteria--but in a rather negative way--would be my favorite character from Gate Keepers (and one of my all-time favorite anime characters period), Megumi Kurogane. She's a gloomy, festering, self-hating pill of pure bitterness. (Once when Bitterman was considering using an avatar, I suggested Megumi as someone who could match his bitterness).

Wait, if Clannad has cats being killed I'm crossing it off my wantlist.

Edel from Planetes is a good one. While she is mainly quiet to hide her darker past revealed later on in the show, she does help out and bail out the main cast a couple times and is really professional

Edel really is awesome. In the same class - at top, Roberta in Black Lagoon.

The whole Roberta "introduction scene" in the anime was great, it'll get even better when a certain other maid is introduced in season three

O.K, let's pick a few no-one has mentioned yet, starting with an amazingly obvious one if you have seen the series.

Anna Respighi from Battle Athletes Victory. Holy shit did she quickly change the stereotype of the shy blunette once you put a tennis racket in her hand...

Anju Maaka from Karin - She is the vampire version of Ruri-Ruri - most intelligent, most powerful, most awesome and when she gets mad, most scary.

Karen Ichijou from School Rumble - Not as scary as the above two but her reaction time and insane strength means you always have to be on guard around her...no matter how lovely she is...

Mai Kawasumi from Kanon - Don't hurt Sayuri. EVER. THIS GIRL WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS.

You'll meet her in the manga first, probably. In the manga, the Roberta arc is the last story IIRC

OT, BTW I've got my vol.1 already. :)

I have to mention Kanna from Inuyasha. With her blank expression and few words (barely whispered), it would be easy to overlook her. But her mirror not only traps souls, it can deflect the Windscar and Kagome's arrows. Being so detached yet powerful makes her one of the most eerie characters out there; she seems like a model for Enma Ai.

Tamaki Kawazoe from Bamboo Blade. Shy and soft spoken, but don't DARE challenge her to a kendo match :beat:

Yeah! You mentioned 2 characters that I was going to list.

Kirika and Lucy/Nyu

Both are great characters! :)
