Just to remind everybody, tonight is the premeire of Moribito, Guardian of the Sacred Spirit on Adult Swim. Just like with the Gurren Lagaan thread, there is another one in the English Track that discusses the dub aspect. This one discusses the show itself. The airtime is 1:30am.

Thanks. I had no idea when this was airing and since they didn't discuss it at Otakon either I'm glad you mentioned it.

Well the first episode was good. The dub sounds fine so far. I thought that Balsa looked a little like Saya from Blood The Last Vampire at first in the face. The chiose to cut the closing theme sadly doesnt come as a shock to me at all. I did like some of the animation ecpecialy with the CG water effect.

I was impressed with the first episode of Moribito. The production value was high for a TV series, on par with what I'd expect from an anime movie. The character designs are nice enough and I also thought Balsa's face looked very similar to that of Saya from Blood: The Last Vampire. Balsa is an interesting lead character. The English dub was solid. I'll definitely be following this series on Adult Swim.

Am I the only one who was reminded of ghost in the shell s.s.s. when watching it?
I liked how all the characters were given an short introduction for later on, so is this based on a manga or anime original?

Neither - it's based on a novel.

It was actually made by the same people, so you have good instincts there.

A novel, which is out in English.

I only caught part of this during it's second running. I really liked the art style and the fluidity of motion. I also thought of last GiTS movie. It's a little simular in artstyle to the Escaflowne movie as well. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of this as well :)

Apparently it is not on the AS website for some reason. At least it was not there when AS normally puts up new episodes.

Yeah, I almost forgot it was airing until I just happened to check ANN at around 1:15, saw the reminder there, and had one of those "Oh yeah" moments. I had never seen the show before, beyond the opening animation that MB has been showing for promo purposes, and was thoroughly impressed with the series. I'm going to keep watching and will be looking for it when it comes out on DVD too...

Just watched it(missed it last night due to shifting work schedule :|), dub's passable, but Balsa==Motoko is going to be stuck in my head if I keep watching it. I need to hear Chagum's voice some more as he settles into commoner speak, but I'm not a big fan of it so far. Other than that, some stiffness in delivery and some lines that could have had a smoother flow are the only other complaints I have against it.
Hmm, this provides an interesting opportunity now for experiencing the series, as I've gone from the subs when it aired, then recently through the novel, and now there's the dub. Watching until Episode 3 at any rate, one of the best spear fights ever.
Also, worth noting to those that are watching this for the first time, it will get really, really slow at times, but that's completely intentional, as the fighting is not the focus of the series, but rather a delicious treat that shows up periodically.

The VA for Balsa is Cindy Robinson, not Mary E. McGlynn. But yes the way she sounds she certainly reminds me of Motoko.

I was quite impressed by the first episode. I didn't know much about the series going in, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleased to find a show that seems to be right up my alley.
The lack of it being broadcast online is disappointing, as I don't always stay in on Saturdays - yet the late time-slot affords me a bit if leeway there. Still there will be some nights that whether I go out or not, I won't want to stay up until 1:30 to catch that week's episode. In those cases i'll have to find it online somewhere.

I never watched this one back when it first aired, and really, I’m not a big fan of anything fantasy. When I asked my brother what this was and he told me fantasy, I wasn’t expecting much.
Surprisingly, I loved the show and it felt very well made. An enjoyable watch and I’ll most definitely stick with this one to the end. I liked the dub too.
Never judge a book by it’s cover, as they say.

I was surprised when I saw that the first episode wasn't available on the AS site. Good thing I taped the entire anime block.
I've never heard of the show before, so this was my very first time watching it. I'll keep watching, it looks like an interesting show.

I have it taped but I've yet to watch it. I will soon though... in a couple of hours today. My impression of it will tell me if I'll like it dubbed or wait to watch it subbed when it is released.

One of the people that work there confirmed they won't be able to have the episodes online, at least not during the premiere run for it.

Huh, coulda sworn it was the same, that's what I get for watching it while really tired.

Well Mary Elizabeth's voice is very distinctive but I can see where any confusion happened. I personally don't think I have ever heard her(Mary) do any other type of voice other than her own normal one.

I saw it and it looked impressive. The setting reminded of the Twelve Kingdoms to a certain extent.

I actually read the novel. A very good novel. The hardbound edition I have is quite beautiful. High quality, unbleached cream-colored paper, gradated indigo print and illustrations. Very nice edition for my bookshelf. I'm so glad I ordered it.
So far, the anime is sticking pretty close to it. I am VERY impressed. It looks gorgeous and I intend to buy the series when available. Dub is not too bad either, though I am really looking forward to seeing it in Japanese and subbed.
Now, I must gripe about adult swim: Why? Oh why, is this on so late! The novels are considered Young Adult (ages 11 or 12+), and really don't have anything that parents could object to. Is there something about the anime that is different, or more violent? I think that this could appeal to a larger audience than they are getting at 1:30 a.m.
WTF?
I feel like it deserves to get a wider audience...

Oh, it has nothing to do with the content. They've aired far worse stuff earlier on before, that's for sure. It's simply a matter of Saturday not drawing very good ratings this year for them and so the anime has gotten shafted to the end of the lineup as a result.
The thing is though, the first hour of the night is actually the worst for them in regards to viewership now, since there's so much competition during that hour from other networks, so I don't think it's fair to assume they're trying to kill or bury it or anything like that by putting it on so late, even though it does certainly look that way I have to admit.

I was interested in seeing the premier episode until I saw the graveyard slot AS gave it. If I'm not tired, I'll view episode 2 when I get in from work.

Not to nitpick, but Young Adult novels are junior high, not 11 and 12.
Which is beside the point - these aren't Young Novels. They're Children's Literature. They were always aimed at 11 and 12 year olds.

Just saw last night's episode on AS and I continue to be amazed by the stunning visuals for this television series. The fighting scenes in particular were extraordinary with its fluid choreography and intensity. The story remains intriguing.
I'm somewhat surprised that Media Blasters was able to outmaneuver some of its larger competitors for this title. Hope it does well for them.

I have to say that I also find the visuals and fight sequences to be stellar as well.
After seeing the 3rd episode yesterday on AS I have to say that this so far has been an entertaining series. I really like Balsa as a character. She seems to be very dedicated to her mission. I was sort of confused toward the end though where these two guys were fighting near her. I thought they were out to kill her but they didn't. Maybe they though she was dead? Still, it was a good episode.

I think she was either hallucinating or thinking about past memories. I'm pretty sure she was the child hiding behind the tree. Recall that when her friend found her there was no trace that anyone else had been there.

Ah yes, that makes sense. I must have been too drawn in when I was watching that I must have not noticed that there was no trace of anyone being there.

That scene was a little confusing and it took a little while for it to click for me. It hard not to be drawn into this show, especially during the fighting scenes. It's as immersive an experience as I can recall for an anime series.

The show just somehow draws me in. Not just with the fight sequences, but like when Prince Chagum was trying to get to Balsa's friends house. The surroundings and the feeling the show gives off just amaze me.

I agree completely. I really hope the rest of the series maintains this level of quality. Also, I'm really enjoying the dub so far.

According to ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-09-11/adult-swim-shifts-bleach-geass-moribito-timeslots), Adult Swim moved around it's anime lineup this upcoming weekend. The fact that they moved some shows around isn't surprising, but shifting Moribito to 5:30AM on Sunday?! Well, I guess I should be happy that it's still being aired unlike Shin-Chan.

This is rather inconvenient for me. I have satellite service and I live on the west coast which means that Moribito is going to be on for me at 2:30 AM rather than 5:30 AM. :depressed: I guess I'm going to have to just use DVR and record it.

At least Shin-Chan was moved to Adult Swim Video & completed its run... but with FUNimation pimping Season 1 Part 2, that didn't sound good to them.
Update: Since the quoted post, Moribito has been on @5:30 AM (4:30 CT) for 6 weeks. This Saturday/Sunday, 11/01/08 AKA 11/02/08 (BTW, Fall Back & set your clocks/DVR's/etc. Back 1 Hour) will be the 7th Week it's been on @5:30 AM.
Starting 11/08/09 AKA 11/09/08, there's Good News & Bad News. Good News: Moribito is starting from the beginning; maybe helpful for those who have missed episodes. Bad News: It's still on @5:30 AM! How does that help anyone?! Memo to John Sirabella: With Moribito DVD's coming out 11/04/08, does that help Media Blasters or hurt it? Please post if/when you have the time.
Edited: Thanks to Bandai for bitchslapping [adult swim] & waking them up! I'll post in the thread on [as]'s new schedule... it could be better, but it's not "Ugh"!
