I'd like to join you, but the director (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=8838) and the chief director (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=5558) are less than inspiring.
Still, it claims they'll be in production a full year before it airs, so it should avoid the budget issues that have plagued Madhouse shows recently.
Is it even based on the manga, though? There's no mention of it anywhere, and the picture is unrelated. I think you usually have to include a credit for the original artist somewhere, and this doesn't...

Always have to rain on my parade, huh? :p I'm just happy it's being made--I can cry when it's utter shit later.

If it isn't based on the manga, that's a really misleading name they chose.

Might as well bump this.
You can seem them fighting the budget, and fishing for tone, and the voices are all wrong, but enough of it survived that I didn't hate it.

Yeah, you pretty much took the words out of my mouth. I think my expectations had ended up being so low after seeing the (pretty terrible) trailer, and hearing they had cast Miyano as Cao Cao, that it ended up being better than I expected.
Still, oh man, that opening. I was going to make my friends watch this with me, and now I'm not sure it's worth the ridicule I'm going to get for that.

At this point I'm just so happy to not get a manufactured pop song that I'm fucking happy with the Japanese Limp Bizcuit.
And I actually liked the ending song: Ogre You Asshole is a fantastic band name.
I've just learned not to actually recommend a Madhouse show until I've seen the second episode. So many times the first episode manages to retain enough of what I loved that I assume they'll work out the kinks and get better, only to have the second episode prove them utterly clueless.
I pity anyone attempting to translate the philosophy duel without a phd in bullshit.

Still some rocky elements, but it does seem to have stabilized. Pale shadow of the manga, but seems to be getting enough of it to be worth recommending.

The funny thing is that the band, Tribal Chair, did the ending to One Outs and that song sounds nothing like Souten Kouro's 909; I was actually really surprised to see that they're from the same group.
At least most of the opening is instrumental and only uses vocals at the end.

I was expecting something with a fairly serious tone and I got something rather silly. I'm not quite sure what to make of what I just watched and I have no idea where this is going (my knowledge of the Three Kingdoms is virtually nil), but I wasn't impressed with the first episode.

I understood the idea of what Sou Sou was trying to do but what was actually being said only made vague sense and I don't understand how he "got" the guy at the end. And then they just beat the shit out of him anyway.

I haven't watched this, but I've decided that unless Sousou's a flatchested drillhair who gets oral sex from her (female) underlings in the school bathroom, I'm probably not interested.

Watch a different "version", and it'll make a more sense. Though, as Andrew said, you still need a PhD in BS.
Though I rarely try do this, even if you were confused by the first episode, I would recommend the second. It's more traditional in themes and characterization, though probably still "humorous" in some respects if you're not used to this type of story.
(also, it's "Cao Cao". >_>)

Well, I still can't take a lot of the "serious" scenes seriously, but that was far more interesting than the first episode and I'm curious in seeing where things go.

Ha, yeah, that's who I immediately thought of when I first saw his name pop up. At the moment, I would say you aren't missing too much from this series by taking that position.
Re: Cao Cao/Sou Sou: One's the Japanese version of the names, one is the Chinese version. I prefer the version that matches what I'm hearing. This was a huge annoyance when I was watching Koihime, though its less of an issue here since this series isn't adding 3-4 characters every episode, each with two names.

Anyone heard the full version of the show's opening theme, 909 by Tribal Chair?
I'm listening to it right now, and there's actual singing in it... Right after the point where the anime opening version stops. Ther anime uses the first minute-worth of the song and stops right before the actual song starts, hence why it sounds horrid as an opening.
I don't really get why Madhouse did that, but oh well.
