I went to see this today, here's some thoughts (spoilers below aren't anything major but I covered them just in case):
I hadn't been keeping up with the news so I don't know if it was revealed or not if TV footage was going to be used, but of course a good bit was. A lot of the animation is taken right from the TV series, especially in the first half. There's an entirely new introduction however, and the second half has a fair bit of new animation since it re-envisions the battles against the generals into one big battle, which was... interesting, at least. I think some of the lines were also re-used, but I'm not sure.
There was some minor Yoko and Nia fanservice added, but it was blink and you'll miss it. Nothing special.
Instead of ending with the events that would coincide with episode 16, it appears that they're splitting the movies up so as to cover an even amount of episodes, so it ended after the generals were defeated.
On the whole it was too much like a compilation movie that I felt it should be considering how awesome the TV series was. I guess I was hoping that it would have been given the same treatment Evangelion got for its compilation movie. So while entertaining, it's definitely not a replacement for the TV series, especially compared to some compilation movies. A bit on the short side, as well (I thought the same thing about the Z Gundam movies). I guess the days of epic 2 1/2 hour compilation movies like First Gundam are long over...
At least the new Shoko-tan song for the end credits was good.

The first 3/4 or so was pretty much straight recap, though generally done pretty well. Rossiu and the Black Siblings got their character introductions utterly demolished, but something had to give.
Its been too long since I saw the series to know what, if anything, was new in those parts, but then the last quarter was FANTASTIC.
Starting out with Nia confronting Adiene, but segueing it into a battle with all four kings (counting Viral) was awesome, and was a really slick sequence. Kittan and Yoko both got great chances to show their stuff (Yoko going Gun-kata on Adiene was fantastic) ending with a truly amazing GIGA DRILL BREAKER!
I think Ragan-hen is supposed to have even more new footage.

This actually aired on TV Tokyo in HD for the New Year Holiday in Japan, and surprisingly it wasn't an upscale (even though no Blu-ray has been announced). It looked pretty good, compared to watching it in the theater it was a bit easier to spot what was re-used footage from the TV series (which does look like upscaled SD, but the upscaling technique was excellent) and what was newly animated; there was actually more new footage than I originally thought.
I think a good bit of the movie was cut for time, kinda hard to tell since a lot of story was already cut from the TV series. But I laughed when I saw that the brief panty-flash added for Nia for the movie was kept in, even though TV Tokyo doesn't allow panty flashes for their TV anime.
I never understood why they don't allow them, it's not like I have to see them but all the carefully angled shots and foreground objects made just to obscure panties just makes me want to roll my eyes (this goes for KyoAni shows as well). I looked around the internet in Japanese to see if I could find more information, but it just seems to be over-compensation in self-censorship as result of the Pokemon Seisure episode. And the general consensus is that the self-censorship is stupid and unfairly targets TV anime, which actually resulted in some anime companies choosing other networks over TV Tokyo.
So basically nipples/panties = bad (unless it's live action, anime movie, or panties on a guy), but
ass shots/swimsuits/nipple-obscured breasts = okay

This was shown subbed only at theaters right?
Does that mean that there will never ever be an English Dub?

Unless this got an American airing I haven't heard of, that means we're talking about Japan.
In which case your question is, well... >_>

I don't know, but Buster lives in Japan. So he would have been watching it in a Japanese theater.

Yup, that's the one I was talking about :)!
Hopefully there will be English Dubs before 2012 for both Movies :).
