View Full Version : Shows with a world that "you wouldn't mind spending time in"
I have a large list of shows that I own and don't mind watching more then once, but only a couple that I'd actually like to "be a part of" or "hang out" in that shows "world". For example something like Kamichu's setting, or even something like Planetes with everything going on. Part of it is the staff working on the show itself, which is no surprise when it comes to something like Kamichu.
What are some of your favorite shows where the "worlds" the characters live in are as lush and interesting as the characters themselves?
Here are some of mine:
Kamichu - Not just Japan, but the spirit world just seems interesting. It has this laid back feel to it, very calm.
Emma - Victorian England, but done in a way that almost feels like you're late for tea.
GITS SAC - Cyberpunk, but through two series and multiple movies it just seems so chock full of interesting things going on.
Planetes - A moon colony, space garbage collectors, working in space, the earth still spinning around? Count me in.
Red Garden - Sure it's just New York, but it's done in a way that is interesting, especially when the you know what hits the fan.

My first answer doesn't even take a second's though- Number One with a gondola would have to be Aria. When you're talking beautiful worlds and environs to be in, nothing else can really compare.
I'll think of more between now and when I'm back at a real computer to post from. :p

Aria is really the only choice.

Hmm, I wouldn't mind living in the world of Hayate the Combat Butler, but that goes without saying.
Other than that, even though I've never seen it, from what I've read the Aria universe would be very appealing, as would living in the world where Last Exile is set. Oh, and Strike Witches, just because the girls wear panties as trousers.

I'd have to third this opinion. Being rowed around a romantic city by beautiful women…what's not to like?

I think I'd only want to visit Hakuou Academy, but otherwise, that world is not too interesting :P

Well, Aria is nice. A clean Italy would always be fun to visit, but I don't think I'd want to stay there long.
Other places that are like cleaner versions of real world locations are also good to visit. The story world from Princess Tutu or the Austria/Germany town from Tiny Snowfairy Sugar would be great tourist attractions.
Another I wouldn't mind staying in for a short while would be the world in Girls Bravo.
Unfortunately there's a small problem in that most of the worlds that I would really like to stay in are too dangerous. Never know when a tower is going to fall down, or a spaceship is going to crash into your neighborhood. With my luck I'd be one of the random people who dies off screen.
The magical world in Negima for example. Sure it would be nice, especially since I could always go back home, but I probably wouldn't make it back. :D
I'm allergic to dying so series like Berserk, One Piece, or "It's a Gundam!!!!" are right out.

Saga's hometown Mühlenburg would definitely be a place I wouldn't mind spending time in. It's just a beautiful town. It would definitely be a great place to be in.
Another world that I can think of that I would want to spend time in would be Cowboy Bebop's. I think it would be cool to spend time on other planets in the future.

Definitely Naruto. I want to spend time in school learning to be a ninja.
And doing C ranked missions would be fun.
I'll think of more later.

All things considered, I'd prefer to be in a world where nothing catastrophically bad happens.
Places like the worlds of Cardcaptor Sakura, Ah! My Goddess and You're Under Arrest would be good places to settle. Yes, danger may threaten, but a happy ending is assured.
I rather like the idea of living in Mühlenburg from Little Snow Fairy Sugar. It'd be like living in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but without the constant busloads of tourists.

I agree with the Kamichu, Planetes, and Sugar picks.
Others I can think of at the moment:
Adolescence of Utena - for the architecture. Though it might get confusing with its Escher influence.
NieA_7 - to help out Mayuko if I could... poor girl. Also, Enohana seems like a nice place to just relax.
...and I already live in the world of Strawberry Marshmallow, so...

Fourth!
While it's good to see the world has advanced enough in technology that we can now travel to other planets and colonise it, ARIA shows us that the simple life is always the best way to enjoy things.
Same with Mühlenburg. :sdsmiley:

This might sound weird, but I think the KOR world would be fun to live in - a relaxed 80s Japan. Come to think of it, almost every other anime series I really like takes place in Heian-era Japan, or in a war zone I'm not interested in.
I think visiting Roshtaria in El Hazard would be a lot of fun, as well as the space satellites of Battle Athletes or Stellvia. I liked the suggestion of Saga's town in Sugar. The Shingu or Urusei Yatsura world would be fun too, you'd be guaranteed constant weirdness.
I'd likely end up in the Chi's Sweet Home world so I could pet and play with adorable kitties XD

Nah, Bible Black is one of those danger worlds. You sure would have lots of fun before you die, but that dying part really sucks.
That's why I picked Girl's Bravo. Not quite as much "fun", but much safer. I guess the world from Discipline would be a safer version of Bible Black, but the women there all seem to be focused on one guy.
as well as the space satellites of Battle Athletes or Stellvia.
I thought about Battle Athletes, but then I remembered that I'm not an insanely powerful/capable athlete so I'd never make it there except as a spectator.
There were some other places I thought of too, but figured they might be obscure.
One was the planet from Mujin Wakusei Survive which is sort of like Swiss Family Robinson/Land of the Lost with robots instead of pirates and dinosaurs.
Another was Patapata Hikousen no Bouken which is a world bit like Nadia (based off of Jules Vernes), a bit like Laputa, and a bit like Grandia (an old Sega Saturn RPG)... although I guess the Nadia example is the best one to use since both are based off of works by the same author.
The draw back is that both series involve me being an active contributor to daily activities and having some type of wilderness survival instinct which I surely don't have (well I do, but I'm too lazy to put it into place unless really forced). This is the same reason why magi/tech worlds like Rayearth, Mega Burst Space Maze or Escaflowne or mideval worlds like Lodoss and Slayers won't do.
Hmm... that reminds me. Hyper Police was a pretty stable world (other than Natsuki blowing holes in space/time). As long as I don't piss off any of the beasts in the area, it could be fun. Safer than Combustible Campus Guardress, but with the same amount of weirdos.
Or maybe I'm just too picky.

In addition to a lot of the shows already mentioned, a place I really like is the setting of Please Teacher and Please Twins. The country just looks so beautiful, I could walk around aimlessly for hours just admiring it.

Neo-Venezia of Aria definitely. I'd like to visit Silver Millennium in its happy days, from Sailor Moon legend.
The Totoro forest is another nice enviroment to vacation in.
For curiosity alone, Olympia of Appleseed, Tokyo 3 of Evangelion, & the Tokyos of GiTS & Vexille. Megatokyo fo BGC/2040 if not those. I like to experience how I feel with cyborgs & androids around me. :P

I can't understand people wanting to live in the Planetes world, given that its history & current political & military status seemed to be in world-changing turmoil.
Add Someday's Dreamers to my list. Any worls where there are magical people, be it magical girls, My Hime/Otome types or only magic users would be interesting...probably more from a distance.

I'm basing my Planetes mark off the end of the series, but I do get your point about things that go on during the series. I guess I'm more in love with the whole "space travel" and character relationships used in the series that make me want to be there.

Fist of the North Star.
Just kidding... my vote is for Aria as well :). Though if you think about a lot of anime (more in the shounen realm of course), it kind of sucks if you're not the protagonist/antagonist in these stories... you'll just end up adding to the tally for body count at the end of the show.

Forget about magic cards. At Tomoeda Elementary, students are respectful, courteous, responsible, generous and concerned for each other's well-being. They take pride in their school. They also have field trips to places like the beach, an ice rink and a ski resort. Kids in groups can hop trains and go shopping, to amusement parks, festivals, etc.
Who wouldn't want to grow up that way?

The answer very much depends on what it means to be in the world. Do you get to be like a main character? Are you an average on-screen background character? Are you an average person in the world (which includes third world peasants as well as Tokyoites)?
Do settings that are 'nicer' versions of real-life also have more racial and religious tolerance, fewer poor people, better medicine, etc. than the real ones? Have they invented refrigerators and air conditioning? If not, living in Emma or Patapata could really suck.
Even something like Totoro has this problem. Not everyone in the world gets to see those nice scenic vistas; there are probably a lot of salarymen a few miles away. And you won't have MP3 players or computers. Likewise, Beck may not be so good unless you assume that all prospective musicians have fun, not just the main characters.
For overall niceness, I have to admit Pokemon is a good choice. There's no poverty, 10 year olds can wander around the world safely, and the interesting parts of the world aren't limited to main characters. And they have computers. Ah My Goddess is safe but bland if you're not a main character (and if you are a main character I'd prefer Tenchi Muyo).
Haibane Renmei is probably taking place in purgatory, and life there is calm but very austere, making it a no-no.
A lot of cyberpunk series like GITS and BGC are good assuming you don't have to be a poor person (which is a very big problem in a cyberpunk series). Naruto has no computers and has the problem of getting caught in a war. Same for Sakura Wars, which I'd really like otherwise.
Dragonball/Z is much better than it seems at first. High tech, interesting things and places, normal humans can learn to fly, and whenever everyone dies they get brought back anyway. Ranma 1/2 is also better than it sounds at first.
Negima may be good but I haven't seen enough of it to say.
Overall I'd have to say Pokemon, despite a lukewarm attachment to the series itself. Of course, if you really look at this question, you notice that some worlds just don't make sense.

The shows' "worlds" that I wouldn't mind living in, are not necessarily favorite shows of mine, but rather anime series/movies/ova's with really cool/interesting/amazing/sweet/neat worlds, that I just would enjoy living in. Here are a few shows, that I would like to "live in" their world.
1. Pokemon - It be really cool to be a Gym Leader in the Pokemon world. Wouldn't? At first you start off as a loonley trainer, get better, get lot's of Pokemon, and save up and open up a Gym. You stay a Gym leader for man, many years, and maybe become part of the "Elite Four"!! That would be so cool. Just to be able to go out, and catch Pokemon, and fight with them and stuff is very cool. (I always said they should make a game where you are the a struggling Gym Leader, and can eventually become a great Gym leader, turn the Gym around, and then become a member of the "Elite Four" .Best game idea ever!)
2. Cowboy Bebop - Perhaps because that world seems so interesting to me, so realistic, and so cool that I just dig it! It could totally be how the future is, and so I'd like to live there.
3. Eureka Seven - It would be so interesting to live in this world. It's so foreign,, so different then ours, but I'd love it. I'd love to get a job like Dominics in the military for sure! Being a higher up in their military or government would be amazingly cool! Go SOF Forces! (haha)
4. Now and Then, Here and There - I'd like to see the world of "Now and Then, Here and There". it's really different then here, but then again very simlur to the real world. Of course I'd only like to viset it, not live there .
5. Desert Punk - To live in the world of "Desert Punk" would be interesting all right. I could make a name for myself being a Bounty Hunter, and having fun and stuff haha! Plus I LOVE deserts!!

It's a movie, but I would love to live in the world of A Tree Of Palme. It had one of the most beautiful and unique worlds I've ever seen in an anime, despite it's shortcomings as a movie.
I'd love to visit some future worlds like those in Kurau Phantom Memory and Starship Operators. It would be incredible to be out among the stars and travel in space. And who doesn't love the thrill of knowing any minute you could be vaporized by a mysterious alien life form?
I would also like to visit the Demon Kingdom in Kyo Kara Maoh. Lots of hot demon guys... count me in.

Second this. Lain might be interesting as well, I would have to stay away from Eva not to much interested in becoming only a spirit mind creature maybe Read or Die? Definitly would NOT want to live in the world of Texnolyze *shiver*

Renmei is usually considered to be an equivalent of purgatory. If you're living there, you're dead and working your sins off. This to me is a major dealbreaker.
And I'd never want to live in a world with no air conditioning or penicillin, let alone no computers.
I just don't understand Twelve Kingdoms. Not only do they not have technology, they have a system of social status based on ancient China. Being a servant or peasant is terrible, and the world has a lot of them.

Being purgatory is one interpretation yes but not the only. We only find out for sure that one of the characters has sins to work off. The others *shrug* we don't know, and really neither does Abe. As I was told time and time again *heh* after asking many questions in MN, the show is supposed to be ambiguous.
If I had books and nature I wouldn't miss computers to much I don't think not sure though.
(check my blog out for more information about the ambiguous nature of HR)
