View Full Version : your #1 favorite Gainax girl
treatment

i was thinking of doing this as a poll-thread, but frankly, i'm just too lazy to do it as such. :sd:
at any rate, who is your #1 favorite Gainax-girl among all the Gainax-anime you've ever watched?
you know, the one anime Gainax-girl that you consider very dear to yah. regardless if the anime she's in is crap or the awesomest.
is it the bouncy-bouncy Noriko of Gunbuster?
is it EVA's fiery Asuka or icy Rei ?
the boobilicious Yoko of Gurren Lagann?
is it Mahoro or one of the Triomatic girls like Rin?
the confused Mamimi of FLCL, perhaps?
etc, etc, etc...
it would be nice to explain your choice, too.

Beth of Petite Princess Yucie. That show was full of awesome girls, but Beth was my favorite. Tough, single-minded, devious, and totally caught off guard by Cocoloo's genuine friendship.

Hell yes. I could watch her jump rope all day.
Over the course of the show she becomes a tough and courageous young woman, but she never loses the cuteness. I love her character design.

Definitely Noriko Takaya from Gunbuster. She was the first Gainax girl I saw (before Asuka, Rei and the rest of them). And as such, she I have a certain nostalgic fondness for her.
I actually have to go with Haruko from FLCL. Sure Rei and Asuka are nice, but Misato was a close second

Jung Freud. Noriko is a close second, and there's plenty of others that aren't far behind given that I'm a massive Gainax fanboy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_cIL3hA-KI), but I've just always loved Jung Freud's part in Gunbuster... and the implication of the part she played in the background to Diebuster.

My bad. I suppose I should actually read the opening post?
Noriko, Kazumi and Jun are from Aim For Top! Gunbuster! which happens to be my favorite show of all time and that could be why I am a little biased. Since I should just choose one, I will choose Noriko. She's a character that exemplifies what I love about anime and what attracted me to it in the first place; strong female characters. She goes through so much and comes out so much stronger by the end of the series. Her senior, Kazumi appears much stronger at the beginning of the show but by the end we see she is the weaker of the team. 'Weak' being a relative term in this case. She is also extremly cute to top it off and excellently voiced by Noriko Hidaka who the character design is based off of. Whether she bounces like that, I do not know.

She is always among my starters with her Gunbuster in any SRW games (the ones that features the Gunbuster characters).

My bad...one of the problems of posting stuff right after just waking up. Here's my resubmitted list with a little more detail for those not as familiar with Gainax properties.
Here's 1-7:
1. Noriko Takaya from Gunbuster
2. Asuka Langley Sohryu from Evangelion
3. Nia Teppelin from Gurren Lagann
4. Misato Katsuragi from Evangelion
5. Lal'C Mellk Mal from Diebuster (and currently my avatar)
6. Yoko Littner from Gurren Lagann
7. Kazumi Amano from Gunbuster
The top 3 are loved for different reasons and are so closely bunched together that it really should be a 3-way tie for the #1 spot. Noriko wins because Gunbuster is my favorite anime.
I'm gonna come out of left field and say Chizuko from Mahoromatic, followed very closely by Minawa from the same.

I thought about it...for like 2 seconds.
Yukino Miyazawa from Kare Kano. Best two-faced character ever - from sweet to sly, her violent mood swings, her comic timings, her relationships with all the main cast, her gradual development as a character, she's still one of my fave characters after all these years.

Wow, I'm surprised no one has even mentioned my favorite:
Nadia, from Nadia: Secret of Blue Water.
Yeah, I know it's old and had a really bad sequel, but it was such an awesome show and she was strong, dynamic, smart & charismatic too.
Of course, Gainax does some nice stuff, so I understand it being hard to pick from all of the great characters! :bowsmiley:

It's all about Ritsuko Akagi from Eva for me - complex, smart, and hot. She even wears glasses sometimes.
(Plus, good chance that she's wearing a swimsuit and lab coat. See also : hot.)
(Oh, sure, there's other hotness elsewhere in other shows of theirs, but she's got the top spot for me...)

Agreed. She's not really a Gainax character (not a Gainax original, anyway) and that's probably why she's so awesome for all the reasons you mention. I didn't even have to think about this one!

Katsuragi Misato.
The title character in Fushigi no Umi no Nadia is possibly the most attractively drawn/attired character in GAINAX's arsenal, but I don't really relate to her. She's certainly not among the female characters I mentally bring up, when considering the ones scripted well enough to join my list of favorites.
I related to the awesomeness that is Kare Kano's Miyazawa Yukino. I understood her high school feelings and preoccupations while cheering on an individuality, even blatant personality, that I wish I could have exercised more of when I was her age. I love Yukino.
But Misato...ah, that one is special. A woman with great courage and loyalty mixed in with her looks, and a playful nature that masks so much of her actual depth. The focus of her issues and trauma is pretty obvious, but the way that she deals with it...I can't help but feel great sympathy for the way that her mind reasons out what she sees as the social expectations of those around her. Her flaws are quite apparent and come across quite tragically. It makes her very real to the viewer, inspiring that instinct to protect her, to scream out warnings and curse those moments when she hurts.
And the rest of the time...you see her put that game face on, a hero's focused expression. Or that defiant, unapologetic rage that she cannot help but let loose, at certain twists and turns. These things give one relief, at those times, while also making one swell with pride and admiration.
Few characters have been fleshed out or brought to life as well as Misato was by the GAINAX crew, in the original Neon Genesis Evangelion works.

Mamimi! She is the colest ANIME character, never mind Gainax Character. She's so cute, so cool, so nice, and so amazing! Rei is number two, and I really love Rei! But Mamimi is just epic.
1. Mamimi - FLCL
2. Rei - Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Yukino Miyazawa * - Kare Kano
4. Cocoloo (Kokoru) - Petite Princess Yucie
5. Beth (Besu) - Petite Princess Yucie
6. Elmina (Erumina) - Petite Princess Yucie
7.Sayaka Imamiya - Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
8. Arumi Asahina - Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
9.Tsubasa Shibahime** - Kare Kano
10. Ninamori - FLCL
Am I a Gainax Fanboy? HELL YES!!!. Whatever they touch turns to gold. They make masterpieces, not anime!!! Their crap is better then other studios best stuff!!
*As for Yukino Miyazawa, sure she's from the Manga(first), but still a Gainax Girl as far as I'm concerned. They brought her to life, and made her a real person. Far better then the manag did(although that was decent).
**Same for Tsubasa Shibahime. Manga original, but still Gaianx girl. She rocks in the anime.

Yoko - Gurren Lagann

I think I'll say Sameji from FLCL. It's hard not to feel sorry for her for most of the show, but she's just so damn cute.
There are others, of course, like Yukino, who's just an incredibly interesting character, and Yoko Littner for her... huge tracks of land, though I haven't seen much of the show. ;)

It wasn't her vegetarian rants that really grated on me. What really bothered me was how in the filler island/Africa sequence, she lost all the characteristics that made her likeable and interesting and became a ridiculously caricatured and downright unlikeable heroine, which was one of the many reasons I hated that sequence from the show so much. (The poor animation and storylines were another.) Which was very unfortunate, because I actually DID like her in the first couple of episodes before the writers warped her personality.
If there were ANY woman from Nadia I'd rate as one of Gainax's top heroines, it'd probably be Grandis or Electra--arguably because both have more backbone than the title character. Grandis in particular is a hoot--alternatingly funny and tragic, while maintaining a "won't take crap" attitude (although one DOES wonder about her tastes in men). (On the flip side, if this topc were #1 favorite Gainax guy, Jean would go up top in an instant for me--he was the one who I really liked throughout the show.)
As for Gainax, I'm very iffy about their output--even though I consider Nadia one of my favorites, those bad episodes (23-29 and especially 32-34) do leave a stain on its otherwise strong entertainment value; Evangelion got more and more confusing as it went along, and honestly, aside from Misato and Koji (the geeky guy with the glasses), I couldn't remember anyone I liked from that show. (And unlike some, I found Asuka totally annoying--I know, she has a tragic past, but meanspirited, bitchy heroines who are mean to others for no reason at all are NOT my kind of heroines.)
Wings of Honneamise was a masterfully done animated feature with a likeable female protagonist and Gunbuster was one of their finest (although the central story could've afforded to be more fleshed out, and the ending less implausible--Noriko survives a super-destruction and returns to Earth in 12,000 years later? Sorry, but I found that laughable and bizarre rather than moving).
Petite Princess Yucie was cute and likeable for the most part, but there were several places where I felt it was running dry, particularly in some of the episodes where the girls are performing their tasks--I had no problems with the characters there, though.
His and Her Circumstances was a wonderful slice-of-life show with a very interesting female character who changes considerably (Yukino Miyazawa, who's up there) through her newfound relationship with Arima... but like Eva and Nadia, it derailed around the midpoint, delving into excessive recaps.
Perhaps I'm sounding too cynical, but Gainax has been hit and miss with me. I realize that they didn't make eps 23-34 in Nadia--those were done by subpar animation studios, but their screw-ups in Eva and Kare Kano and uneven pacing dampened by impressions of the studio. Their best works are brilliant, but their worst efforts are unbearable IMO.

uhh, hey, guys. Just a little reminder to make it clear.
I'm not really sure why some of you guys are putting up lists instead.
Putting up lists is just way too easy and honestly, quite boring.
This thread is specifically asking just for your #1 favorite Gainax-girl. That is the inherent challenge for you to come up with and justify/explain.
Also, it doesn't really matter if the girl-favorite is an original Gainax-creation or not. Try not to be too pedantic.
Afaic, they're all considered Gainax-girls if they are presented, animated and voiced in a Gainax anime-production. This ain't the manga-forum. We're not concerned about authors and other stuff in this thread.
Another thing to remember, too. I mentioned in the OP that it doesn't matter if the anime is crap or not, so try not to let that hinder or affect your decision regarding your favorite Gainax-girl choice. She doesn't even have to be the lead-girl, you know.

Some of my list are deposed #1s :)
The first was Misty May in Otaku No Video. She was replaced by Nadia, who in turn was replaced by Noriko. Noriko was (after some yelling!) edged out by Misato Katsuragi, my current #1.
That is Misato of Evangelion TV. Misato of Rebuild is on shakier ground, as of 1.01, & might be deposed. :keroro:

No, I think your points are understandable. Like any animation company, it would be impossible for Gainax to maintain production on a constant stream of masterpieces.
I'll admit that Nadia's ideas regarding the eating of meat were shocking at first, but didn't detract as much from the character as I made it sound. However, it did feel like the writers were stretching in order to create conflict between Jean and Nadia.
After reading your summaries, it seems like most of Gainax's down points were caused by outside influences, such as NHK's insistence on lengthening the run of Nadia, the loss of direction near at the end of His and Her Circumstances, and running over budget just before the finale of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but that story had already started getting full of itself by that point.
Oh, and I totally agree on Grandis. An admirable, strong-willed woman who still had her flaws.

Yeah, because even in the Nautilus episodes, while there were moments where she could be bratty, she was also relatively sane and actually nice to Jean at many times. That whole sequence on the island and Africa felt like forced, stretched out filler from the start--especially since the whole thing felt so out of place with both the characters' relationships with each other and in general the whole tone.
