My friend let me borrow episodes 4-9. She said I wouldn't miss anything if I didn't watch the first 3 episodes. Did I?

If you're worried about larger plot developments, then perhaps you don't miss too much, but the first three episodes are important for introducing the characters and the world they inhabit. The stories themselves are throwaway backdrops to introducing the characters. Sure, you can skip the first three for now, but you'll want to go back to them at some point.

What Bear said. You can still eventually pick up what's going on without watching the first three episodes, but... why skip them anyway? I feel like it's never really a good idea to skip episodes in any show, especially the episodes that introduce the main characters...
That and they're just fun eps.

If you want to see what you're missing, you can head over to the FUNimation Channel (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=26FC911CC9AFBC96) on YouTube.

The first three episodes are one-off "space-cop" episodes. They introduce our characters, but (especially the first) are a bit sillier than the rest of the series. You probably could get away with skipping them, but then that's three fewer times you get to hear the opening theme and watch Eclair's ass in the ending.
