ADV Channel on Crunchyroll

http://www.crunchyroll.com/user/ADVFilms/titles

As some of you remember 2 months ago Crunchyroll signed a deal to get titles from Gonzo, Media Blasters and ADV... It looks like the ADV titles have started to appear on Crunchyroll... perhaps still incomplete so far which is why there hasn't been an official statement?

Available as of October 8, 2008: (These are all in subtitle format, in original Japanese Audio) for English Dub versions check out the Anime Network Online Player (http://www.theanimenetwork.com)

Angelic Layer (episodes 1-26)
Chance Pop Session (episodes 1-13)
Magical Play (episodes 1-6)
Martian Successor Nadesico Prince of Darkness (Movie)
Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte Z (episodes 1-5)
Saiyuki (episodes 1-5)
Sin (Movie)
Yesterday (Movie)

For some odd reason Crunchyroll left the non-ADV version of Nurse Witch on there...

Maybe the fansub was a better translation :)

Are you talking about "Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte Z (episodes 1-5)"? If so, that'd be because ADV never licensed it... and come to think of it, I never remembered to watch it. Oops.

If you mean just Nurse Witch Komugi (the first OVA), which you probably do if you're saying 5 eps, then that is odd, yes.

Interesting, I wonder if I should see what the subbed version of Chance Pop Session is like. Regardless, I'll probably wait and see what else they put up before deciding on anything. That and I've still got a lot of other things to watch.

Yeah, I only checked the first episode. (I haven't seen the series yet, so from a content perspective I'm not sure why this happened).

It looks like episodes 1 and 2 with the post dates from last year aren't official versions, while episodes 3-5 are ADV's.

And unlike the Anime Network Online player, these don't seem to be region-locked! I already own all of Angelic Layer on DVD, but I haven't seen Chance Pop Session, so I guess this will be my chance to check it out.

Well, they are locked out from Japan IPs, anyway. But I think that EVERYTHING on crunchyroll is locked out of Japan IPs.

Right but my point was, unlike Anime Network it is not restricted to the US and Canada like so many other online video services.

Keep in mind that ADV has a UK branch, and most of their licenses covered the UK as well. These episodes may well be region locked... just to US, Canada, and the UK.
All I was pointing out was you really don't know what the region locking is and are making an assumption that they are unlocked everywhere from your single data point in the UK.

Now if some guy from Isreal can stream them or something... then I'd say they were probably unlocked.

Its common for broadcasting networks to region lock outside areas they broadcast in. For example, NBC is only available in the United States. This is to protect overseas broadcasters.

Despite ADV owning Anime Network and having branches in the UK, Anime Network only has Canadian & American rightst to the animes it airs and while TAN may hold the broadcasting rights in North America a more mainstream channel in the UK could hold the UK broadcasting rights to that same anime. And that is why Anime Network Online is only viewable to Canada & United States only. It is the issue of broadcasting rights and digital transmition infringes on broadcasting rights as well.

Yes, Anime Network in specific right now is US and Canada... however last year that included to some degrees the UK and Puerto Rico.

Hmm, and using CoralCDN doesn't work on it either (it does for the South Park Studios site btw, if anyone outside the US is interested in that). Guess I'll have to try something a bit more advanced to get around it.
