Being mostly interested in odd, thought provoking anime (Lain, EVA) I don't have much in the way of simple relaxing anime, and I need that today. As well Air has been recommended here highly. Is the movie a good introduction for someone who isn't sure if they are going to want to watch the show in series form or not? My library has a copy so I don't even have to rent it.

No, not at all. It's average at best, and downright mediocre compared to the TV series. It isn't really set up to be viewed as an "introduction" either since it is something of a retelling of the story. It makes a lot more sense to watch the TV series first.

Maybe a little too much emotional turmoil to call "relaxing". :)

Ah ok. To bad it isn't as good as the TV series, and not a good way to tell if the TV series is something you would like or not? Usually this type of series is something I don't like to much but yeah after looking at the description of the series on the back came to the same conclusion it would not be relaxing. Ah well. I may still pick it up at some point as it is free since it is from the library.

It has more romance (and also a bit more ecchi) than the TV series. It unfortunately also has poorer quality animation and music.

Wow the movie has poorer quality animation...that is different it is usually the other way around right? Ecchi is good though....

Wow the movie has poorer quality animation...that is different it is usually the other way around right? Ecchi is good though....Well, the movie was done by Toei, a studio that's better known for long-running, lesser-quality TV series than shorter, high-quality productions. Which is exactly what Kyoto Animation specializes in with series like AIR TV. ("Lesser-quality" refers to animation quality here, not story or other traits.)
I'd advise just waiting for Funi to do a collection for the TV series, I'm sure it won't be that much more expensive than the movie. Then again, there are those who preferred the movie over the TV series, so anything's possible.

I personally wouldn't compare the Air movie to the Lain or Eva. I can't see how there is much comparison there. As others have said try the TV series, but even that really isn't much like Lain or Eva.

Well, he was contrasting, not comparing.

If you are looking for "simple and relaxing" I wouldn't reccomend AIR at all.
Maybe Maria Watches Over Us or Aria, both from Nozomi

Less expensive than the movie here would be impossible as the movie is at my public library...you can't get less expensive than free....

Well, the movie was different. It's a retelling, and not an exact one either. This isnt like Kanon vs Kanon 06 where it's the same essential story, just expanded and improved. The basics are still there, but because it is a movie they had to shorten some things, remove some characters that we saw in the TV series, and compress everything. Also, the ending is a bit different. Well, it's quite a bit different really. I think a lot of the same feel comes across, but in a completely different fashion.
In many ways I could compare it to Clannad TV vs Clannad the Movie. Both are good, but the TV series has more time to play with character development and takes that. But it also lacks some of the same emotional depth, in my opinion, that the movie has because the movie can compress certain things down. Of course you can only take this so far because Clannad the Movie has a great ending. Air the Movie was so so. Then again, I cant say I was that thrilled about how Air TV ended either, other than it was fitting. Air the Movie just feels like something of a cop out as opposed to something that could have been really moving.
Because the movie and TV series are different, it's hard for me to say which is better. It really depends on my mood and how I am feeling, and what I want to watch. At some points in the year, the TV series is better for me, and other times I prefer the movie. It isnt just a question of time, but also how each is presented. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses.
In my opinion seeing both is good, not because they can help you understand the other, but because each tells things slightly differently and gives you the same essential story, but with emphasis on different things.

The movie will not tell you if you like the TV series. Furthermore, given your conditions in the OP post, I would suggest that AIR is NOT the series you are looking for. I'd suggest Kanon over it for what you seem to be looking for. Or even more, the two series I suggested earlier.

Well, I guess it could be that. But if I were going for relaxing, I'd go with Kamichu! or Aria.

Yeah, Midori Days is a love comedy, and not really "relaxing" at all.

I found it fairly light-hearted and relaxing after a couple of more cerebral/serious shows. I suppose its all relative.

Yes, my boss found When They Cry to be relaxing. I stay away from him during Halloween and nights with full moons....

I thought we were talking about relaxing, not re-AXing.
