I'm reading the MSG Origin manga (Viz) at the moment, & it has more story of what happens than the 1st MSG movie.

Is the manga only reflecting what was shown in the early MSG TV episodes, or is more detail given still?

The Origin manga is actually pretty significantly different from MSG TV, right down to some notable design changes in the Gundam itself, as well as the Guncannon.
