Hmm, interesting. I wouldn't have expected this series to be animated in HD. Will most likely pass on it though, as my budget will probably be going to other anime series on Blu.

With Bones it's anybody's guess. RahXephon was animated in HD back in 2002, after all.

Nice but the series was not that great for me to upgrade to BD, plus the fact that it won't contain English sub.

1080i really doesn't mean much - look at Utawarerumono.
However according to duckroll, Jyuousei was Bones's first HD show, so this should be an upconvert.

CDJapan mentions 2009/04/24 as the release date for the second box

Duckroll must not know their stuff then, since RahXephon is HD?

I have my doubts about RahXephon actually - as we've seen from the movie release it wasn't made completely with HD in mind. You have shots with aliasing, some that are obviously in SD and some shots that are the way HD is supposed to be. It's very much a mixed bag.

You're probably right. Just to throw the idea out there, but I think just the OP might be true HD, because I remember when I watched RahXephon on DVD the very first time I was stunned by the OP, the fighter jets and buildings, and all the Dolems in general just seemed extremely well detailed to the point where it stood out more than any other anime, of course a lot of that is also to do with Bones just being their awesome self, but still.
EDIT: Come to think of it, on the final episode when the 'final battle' is taking place between Ayato and Quon's merged forms, the screen goes widescreen and there is an extremely noticable increase in detail. So I guess just key parts of the animation could have been done in HD.

Is that Jyu Oh Sei/Planet of the Beast King which FUNi just released? If so I just got the answer to the question I asked in the review thread.

Sweet, then I'll pass on the DVD for the (I assume) eventual Blu-Ray release.
I wouldn't be surprised if the US release was 1080p and not 1080i like Afro-Samurai.

I was about to grab the DVD collection for this series, but since there's a Blu-ray box coming up, I might consider getting the Blu-ray version instead.

The video quality is pretty crappy for the blu-ray which breaks my heart.

Well yeah, it's an upscale (confirmed by screenshots IIRC, although I don't have any onhand at the moment).
Oh well, another one bites the dust. How's the sound?

Actually I take some of the stuff back regarding the video. I did some tweaks and it looks alot better. It's in the 7-8ish in VQ but the thing that will forever piss me off is that it is fullscreen. I keep thinking if they added some stuff to the side how godly it would have been but alas. Anyway the SQ is fine, it's obviously the PCM lossless. I wasn't listening with optimum equipment(just my HD800's straight out of PC as my DAC and amp are in da shop) so take my experience with the usual amount of salt. What is nice is that there is the full version of ep.51(audio) from the radio festival thing a few years back. Now time to get some subs on these so I can watch it in English and understand something....
