View Full Version : I finally figured out what makes Gundam Wing the best

For years I have watched a lot of Gundam series and none of them have been able to be as good as Wing. Some don't even come close to being that good. However, I realized teh other day why, the music. Otani's score in GW fits the series perfectly. The tracks are very mechanical sounding (especially the Mobile Dolls theme) and really grip you into each scene as if he was watching the series while recording the music. No other Gundam series has been able to achieve a score that good, which is why I feel they are unable to be as good. I am big on music, so the score is a very important part of any movie or TV show to me, as it can make or break the item, and in the case of Gundam, the score has broken every series except Wing. That is why I enjoy Wing the most and am never bored while watching it. Maybe Sunrise should have Otani return for the next Gundam series, as he seems to be the only one fit to write the score.

Uh yeah, no.
I like Gundam Wing's music and all, but its hardly the best, Kou Outani does good work, but I wouldn't even rank his Gundam Wing work up on the top of what he himself has done, much less at the top of Gundam music as a whole.
Yoko Kanno's work on Turn-A Gundam, Toshihiko Sahashi's for Seed and Seed Destiny and Kenji Kawai's music for 00 are all stronger as a whole than Outani's Wing work.
Oh, and looking through ANN, I also must mention Kouhei Tanaka, who put together an awesome hot blooded Super Robot score for G Gundam.

Agree completely about better Gundam music. And if we're talking about Outani, I'd easily hold up Haibane-Renmei and Shana as much better and much stronger examples of his work. Heck, Daphne in the Brilliant Blue as well.

Exactly the series I was thinking about.

I'd actually argue Gundam X had by far the most awesome score (if fucking hideous ending song.)
And nobody seems to care about that one.

Hey! I like "Human Touch"! Granted, it's a horrible choice for a Gundam ending theme, but the song by itself is pleasant to listen to. Maybe I'm alone on that one, though.

X's score was quite good, its been a while since I've seen it so I'd forgotten. Doesn't look like the guy in charge has done much.

I like Human Touch as well, but I'm known to have strange tastes in music.

I completely disagree. Yes, Turn A was good, but come on, that series might as well just be Escaflowne 2.0. The music to both SEED series was pretty forgettable, and 00 has done nothing for me thus far. Maybe that will change since I am only at episode 14, but so far, I cannot remember a single piece. The music to Gundam Wing grapsed me the moment I heard it, and it is the only Gundam series I bothered to buy the OSTs for. It is hard core industrial mixed with phenomenal orchestration that is built to perfection as if it was something Pre-With Teeth (or rather, Pre-suckage) Trent Reznor came up with.
As for G Gundam, there were too many other things so wrong with that series.

For years I have watched a lot of Gundam series and none of them have been able to be as good as Wing.Exact opposite happened to me the others series tend to eclipse Wing once I realized Wing borrows its best features from the UC era.
No other Gundam series has been able to achieve a score that good, which is why I feel they are unable to be as good.I never judge a series based on the music alone otherwise that would make a mess like Brain Powered a masterpiece, 0079, 0083, Zeta, SEED and Char's Counterattack all had great scores and are a product of their time that includes Wing. in the case of Gundam, the score has broken every series except Wing. I'd hardly call Zeta, 08th MS Team, and 0083 broken they have their flaws (as does Wing) but I can't remember a time where the music totally ruined a show for me.

Turn-A and Escaflowne could not POSSIBLY be more different. The very idea of comparing them boggles the mind.
As for the rest, meh, opinions, I can't say you're wrong about any of it, but you do a lot of twisting in general to continue trying to justify Wing as the "best" Gundam series (as opposed to your favorite)

Music, huh? And here I was thinking I thought Gundam Wing was great because of Heero and the badass mobile suits he and his buddies piloted, the battles, the gripping, deeply woven plot with shifting allegiances by both major and minor players and the amazing wealth of characters that populated the series. I honestly have to say I never stopped to consider the musical score while watching the show. But hey, to each their own!

I don't really remember the Gundam Wing music, beyond Two Mix's steamin' OP and slightly less steamin' second OP. Then again everyone has their own tastes, (http://store.dieselsweeties.com/products/elitism) so this sort of argument isn't going to go anywhere useful. I think music can make or break a scene, but I've yet to see music make or break an entire series. Then again, I haven't watched more than an episode or two of Macross 7.

As long as the music fits, I don't mind who does it, but I've always has a soft spot for this piece (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd02MWQMQrU). :)

While I wouldn't rank Wing as my favourite Gundam series, I agree with you completely about the music. It's incredibly appropriate to the series and memorable in a way that no other Gundam score has been for me. I could start humming several tracks from it right now off the top of my head, and I haven't watched it in years. I haven't seen Turn-A to judge it, nor some of the others mentioned, but in particular it honestly baffles me that there are people who think SEED has a better soundtrack than Wing. SEED is truly a "sit in the background and be forgettable" type of score. But hey, to each their own.

I cannot help but think of Escaflowne every time I watched an episode of Turn A due to Kanno's score.

TaG's and Esca's sound tracks are so very different it hurts.
TaG has a more military and sorrowful tone, and Esca has a mysterious, haunting sound to it. They don't sound that similar at all.
Gundam Wing had a nice sound track, but TaG stomps all over it with spiked metal boots. Nothing two-mix did for wing can beat Moon or the two OP themes.
