Have you watched anime where you found yourself rooting for the antagonists to defeat the protagonists?

To get the ball rolling, this happened to me in Gunslinger Girl ~ Il Teatrino.
Nothing against the girls and I don't particularly care for Pinnochio but Franca and Franco were depicted rather sympathetically and I was rooting for them to defeat the main characters.

Nanoha A's the Belkan Knights hoping to kick the main characters' asses. Nearly did too. :sdsmiley:

Gundam 00 is one that springs to mind straight away..... Prince Ali, Mr Bushido/Graham.. so many people have commented on this series that it gives us nothing to cheer on the "good guys", and having such likable villains doesn't help their cause.

One Piece was one such series since Luffy just seems to be so stupid that having one of the villains shut him up would finally knock some sense into that head of his.

I've felt sorry for villains sometimes, but just because I do doesn't mean I'm going to root for them to defeat the main characters. Rather I'd want them to make peace with each other. Actually if you want to get technical. At that point I wouldn't be considering them villains. They'd be antagonists instead to me. So it would be impossible for me to root for the villains. The second I feel they're worthy of being rooted for they're no longer villains to me.

This most certainly must be QFT and I am sure that I will be but the first of many to say so.

Somewhere around episode 24 of Eureka Seven I actually wanted Ray and Charles Beams (coolest names ever! Ray Beams! Ha!) to destroy the gekkostate, adopt Renton and Eureka and turn the show into a bounty hunting family. I really wanted Holland and the crew to die at that point.

Rozen Maiden without a doubt. At first, it was because Suigintou was just a hell of a lot more fun than anyone else in that show. She enjoyed putting Shinku and her cohorts through hell, and thus so did I. When Traumend came out, I had to wait for more Gin-chan love but the revelation at the end of Season 1 and the addition of Megu made me root for her more than ever. The crowning touch of Ouverture not only completely validated her hatred for Shinku.

Gin-chan is love. All other dolls can die.

The last time this happened was with Shana. I found the protagonists intensely irritating and, frankly, I wanted them dead. Really dead.

The second season of Agent Aika. The Delmos group felt more sympathetic at that point.

Eureka Seven of course. I was always rooting for the U.F. Forces. Be it Dominic, random army guys, the Sages, or Dewey. I wanted them to "win", hehe.

Oh man, it was a long time since I rooted for a bad guy. I want to say both Haku(from Naruto), and Soujiro(in his fight with Kenshin).

Char's Counter Attack. But far far away from Earth. MSG UC has always been as much about Char (as Amauro/Camille), as LoGH was as much about Reinhardt (as Yang).

Reinhard was the main character.

I just watched Shanna, and I can definitely relate to that.

I honestly can't recall when I'm rooting for the bad guys in an anime. I mean for some villians, I like Kugashira Bunji (GunGrave) and Papilon (Buso Renkin), but I'm not really rooting for them. Unless the protagonist is the villian. Higurashi would be a great example for this.

And okay. While it's not anime, when I watch Looney Tunes I find myself cheering for Sylvester everytime. Maybe it's because I like cats and well...I hate Tweety.:P

Never. I would rather die than root for team evil. In fact, being evil virtually precludes that I will not like a certain character.

With that said, when it comes to jRPGs, there are times I have felt sorry for the end boss because, in many ways, they weren't actually evil. Tales of Phantasia comes to mind. For anime, Magic Knights Rayearth had the same idea. For both properties, the conflict was less about evil and good and more about opposing interests. From one perspective, the heroes were the true villains.

I've been watching El-Hazard: the Magnificent World, and I want Katsuhiko Jinnai / Diva to win the war just so the horribly plotted The Magnificent World 2 and The Alternative World could be different

Heh. I always rooted for the coyote in the Roadrunner cartoons. Same goes for Daffy too. Bugs could be such a prick sometimes. :)

It's been years since I watched any Pokemon, but I always found myself rooting for Team Rocket. Heck, they were the best characters on the show anyway. :)

Nanoha. I wanted Precia to escape, & Alice to be resurrected somehow. I always saw Precia as a tragic character - who if a Sailor Moon villainess, would have been saved somehow as Prof. Tomoe was at the end of BSSM S

They themselves however noted that they make better good guys.

But that would have defeated the entire point of the series.

To those who said Shakugan no Shana, while I wouldn't agree about the protagonists being annoying, I could see why you'd feel that way, but your alternative choice includes a creepy nutjob who hugs talking dolls and the most disgusting pair of twins I've ever seen (not to mention the face that these jerks erase innocent people from existence. Seriously, episode 2 made me wonder if I wanted to even keep watching, luckily it lightened up after that). Surely the heroes would be the lesser of two evils here. :sd:

Of course, judging by some of the responses here (Shinji? Luffy?!), apparently some people find personality quirks or shady morality to be worse than mass murder, being sadistically manipulative, etc. Not judging, but still......

At first I cheered for Light on Death Note but quickly tunned to the police side after When his father lay dying all he cared about was writing Mellos' name down and of course after L's death.
