The remastered region 2 DVD was anamorphic and the version included in the 7 Dogs War LD box set was letterboxed, so my guess is that it will be widescreen.

AV watch released more information.
1080p AVC, 16:9 ratio, has all four audio track including audio commentary. I'll be getting this one... when I somehow gather up enough money. March is kind of a crazy month for me at the moment. orz...

Was Beautiful Dreamer the most popular UY movie or something? I have the CPM release of it and all the AnimEigo boxed sets.

Damn that'll be tempting to pick up... though at the same time I'm thinking it would be better to hold off until they eventually release the complete set of the movies (1-5 at least... 6 can take a flying leap, it would be a waste of good BRD media).

I think its the most well-known. Sort of a groundhog day story for the characters & Lum mainly. It covers the first story (i.e. ep. 1) of UY & is the most bizarre story Mamoru Oshii may have done while he was involved with UY. Beautiful Dreamer is the probably the best known of the movies - why its first release.
Personally, I prefer movie 1 Only You, but that's because its more like a supersized good UY TV episode. 'Dreamer uses UY characters, but Only You is a truer UY story IMO. :knowitall:

Movie 1 also remains my top UY movie, i guess i'll wait for a complete set release in the future or a possible US release (which i don't think will happen in this century).

I only hope this leads to Pony Canyon releasing the other UY movies. The TV series and OVAs would be nice too IF they are cheaper than the DVDs were! The movies of UY (and Ranma) had those "hi-vision version" releases on DVD so I guess that means there is a hi-def master. Whether or not it is a 1080p master is another matter. I don't think any of the Takahashi Rumiko series Pony Canyon own (UY, Ranma, Maison Ikkoku) were remastered on DVD so they could be a long time coming.
I would love to own all the UY movies on blu but especially Only You and Remember my Love !! ^_^

That would be awesome... and would save me the trouble of retiming the subs to the Japanese releases. CPM's DVD subs from AnimEigo don't synch up with the video from the R2 DVD.

Fuck me, I didn't see this coming! o.O
I'm also going to say, subs or no subs (and thank GOD no dub in this case!), that I too will HAVE to get this regardless!
I am excited! This will be a nice companion to my LD, and also make up for the fact I never got the anamorphic R2J DVD :-)

The "Hi-Vision" versions (Hi-Vision being the Japanese term for Hi-Def) were a new hi-def print master but being from 2001, I am unsure exactly what qualified as a HD master at that time. There was a regular and hi-def master version of all the UY movies and the 2 Ranma movies.
Looking just now on amazon.jp, every Urusei Yatsura and Ranma DVD (except for the Ranma OVAs) is OOP with new copes of the movies being close to 20,000yen o_O It seems it is time for a re-release, I would love to see a blu box set of all the UY movies very soon. Until that time, it's the mega cheap R3 set for me!

"Hi-vision" was originally used as the Japanese marketing name for their analog HD service, but at this point it's synonymous with HD in general.

I think the rights to Beautiful Dreamer is held by a different company. That's partly why CPM had that movie and AnimEigo got the rest. I've heard it was something like each company approaching one of the two companies first, got the license and found out about the other company's deal afterwards when trying to get the rest.
This company may be either more on the ball or more willing to take a risk making the leap to Blu-Ray.

Which R1 release are you using? CPM's 2nd release was the "pure version", same as the R2J (IIRC), while their first release was the version used from their dub VHS which did have a few seconds cut from the end. Animéprime.com has details. Perhaps the 1st release has a very slightly shorter running time....

There used to be an explanation on AE's web site. IIRC it said that AE reps & CPM reps were shopping for licences at the same time. CPM got to the licensor for 'Dreamer before AE's, & did the deal.
If CPM no longer has the movie, I want it rescued, unless it will otherwise get a US blu ray release....

Nope, the R1 I have is CPM's newer release and it doesn't use the same master as the R2. The CPM re-release uses the same analog tape master which they used for the first release, only they cleaned it up with DVNR and tacked back on the original Japanese-credit ending.
The CPM re-release is in 4:3 and is open-matte.
The Japanese R2 (put out by Toho) on the other hand is in 16:9 and is anamorphic. It uses a very good 35mm film source (cropped for theaters) and looks miles better than any previous version.
The English subs don't synch up because the Japanese R2 DVD uses a print that may run at a slightly slower speed or is cut slightly differently. Whatever difference, the subs start to progressively run out of synch after the first 15 or so minutes of the movie. I liked the picture of the Japanese DVD so much that I made my own personal DVD that combined the best of both worlds. The English subs would go out of synch so frequently (like after every 5 minutes) that I had to retime them to synch up.
I own both the CPM re-release and the Japanese Toho DVD. I used to own the older CPM DVD (with the incomplete ending) many years ago but somehow the disc stopped working one day.

Thanks for the comparison Kyon. I am certainly feeling much more inclined to get the Japanese BD now I know the 2nd CPM release is as you said. I have the CPM sub VHS & will wait therefore to skip DVD completely.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...
http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20090126/toho.htm
The release has been canceled. Not delayed, canceled. Due to "various reasons".
I can only hope that it's because they decided the master wasn't good enough and they decided to give it a whole new restoration, which usually takes a while so they didn't want to say it was delayed (again, this is only speculation).
I was re-watching some Urusei TV episodes in anticipation of this release, too...

As much as I would love a sub on this release, I don''t think that's the case. This is the first time I've seen a cancellation of Japanese release (not delay, but cancellation...?). It's annoying because I ordered another blu-ray with this one so I could get a discount, but now I have to cancel that order. ~_~ I wonder what the actual problem was though. That is, I'm not sure if this is a license problem or cost problem.

It's not the first Japanese title to get cancelled. The theatrical Clannad BD was also cancelled, and so was Tekkonkinkreet I believe as well?

They are owned by different studios so I doubt there will be a collaboration to make that happen unfortunately. I just wish a box with 1,3-6 (6 sucked but it would have to be included) would come out soon followed by 2 at a later date. I really hope this is just an Akira like situation and there will be a release after they create a better master.
