Macross Frontier volume 1 sold 35,000 copies, beating out all other Blu-ray releases in Japan (including live-action releases). In comparison, the top-selling anime title was The World of GOLDEN EGGS Vol.01, which sold 97,000 copies.
edit: thanks to whoever moved this.

That would seem impressive, except for this:

They shipped 45,000 BDs and 55,000 DVDs... That means they sold less than half the DVDs they printed, and have 10,000 leftover BDs...
That sounds like they expected them to sell a lot more, especially the DVDs.

Well then, I guess they'll just have to make less DVDs and just make the Blu-rays they planned instead (got to have some left over for retailer shelves, it's not a good thing when Vol 1 of a series is sold out). Sounds good to me, and the total number of DVD + BD is still pretty respectable.

I think they were not certain what was going to happen that why they ship so much of both. I think macross F was first release that had BD and DVD came out the same time. Well i guess from now one they ship more BD than dvd since it seems more of fan base wants it on blu .
Will have to see more stuff come out to the same time as DVD to see if fans of anime are moving over to BD ,next year should be fun times.

Not too shabby when you think about how the worldwide economy is at a low and Blu-Ray is so expensive and in it's infancy.
Still, I'd much rather see them making better use of the space available on Blu-Ray rather than follow the episode count on the DVD versions...

They couldn't do that without giving the Blu-ray a different release schedule than the DVDs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Oricon figures aren't "true" figures because it doesn't count every retailer does it? I remember on some jpop music forums that the difference between Oricon and Billboard figures was like 20-30k for Maaya's Triangular OP. Also the press release for one of the Macross Blueray volumes gave off the totals for than first 3 cd singles, all being quite higher than the figures Oricon had that week.

Yeah, but CDs are sold in a lot more places than blu-rays and DVDs in JApan. I bet that the difference in numbers for the video formats isn't nearly so much.
