View Full Version : Cool, serious characters that you would like to see become comic relief

Has there ever been an anime character that you thought was rather cool, level-headed, calm, composed and serious (any combination of those that basically rule them out as a comic relief) that you would like to see as a comic relief?

Just to give an example, such a character that I would give as an example would be Ikkitousen's Kanu Unchou. In the 1st 2 seasons, she was the complete opposite of Hakufu and maybe Chouhi. While the other characters would either indulge in stupid nonsense or be all flustered when things go wrong, she would be the serious and level-headed one that still manages to be cool in a crisis.
In the 3rd season, Ikkitousen: Great Guardians, Kanu becomes the subject of more than half of the show's humor and suddenly this results in the 3rd season becoming immensely entertaining and making (in my opinion anyway) the 3rd season of Ikkitousen the best of the 3 seasons.

No, that sounds like a terrible idea.

Oh no, some of the best humor comes when you take the dark, stoic serious hero and throw him on his back foot.

I'd like to see Alucard get a bit of that treatment, myself.

I was going to say Sosuke Sagara, but sometimes his actions are already classified as comic relief :P.

Actually, Nakago of Fushigi Yugi would've been my first choice, but that's already happened (see the omake).

Caterina Sforza - Trinity Blood
Ai Enma - Hell Girl
Integra Hellsing - Hellsing
Emma - Emma: A Victorian Romance
Altena - Noir

I'm glad TSR kind of limited this. It got on my nerves in the first FMP.

It already happened. Dom in Irresponsible Captain Tylor. In the final episode, he was being as cool and calm and bishonen as usual, but then when Azalyn asked him to bring her Paco-Paco, he committed the mother of all face-plants. Just awesome.

Thank heavens for dub outtakes. "What is this, the flower channel?"

The SD Gundam series (including Superior Defender) does it already.

One of the aspects of Dirty Pair I like is how the girls can fun in adventures, but also become deadly serious killers in others. Both OVAs & TV show that well.

The alternate Evaverse, (on which Angelic Days manga is based), in Eva TV ep #25, is one of my favourite. AD really needs a series of its own. Now that could be done in FLCL character design style & work well. :)

Early Misato & Kaji scenes were comic, as were the earlier Shinji & Asuka ones. And there was even a comic, to the viewer, Gendou & Fuyutuski scene.

Early Rurouni Kenshin episodes had plenty of comic, & charming moments.

My HiME maybe has the best lighter-before-the-storm character moments. But Sailor Moon is the best for mixing-up character joy & sorrow, its biggest appeal.

AFA characters that could, but have not,...I'd like to see Nanoha & Fate unwind together doing normal-life things for kids their age.

Umm...yeah I'd like to see Harlock & Maetel getting boozy together. Then Emerauldas can join in ^^

In one of the A's drama CDs, Fate visits Nanoha's house after school, and Nanoha invites her to take a bath, at which point Fate goes onto a fevered mental glide on the subject of taking a bath together with Nanoha, and just the two of them, and m-m-m-maybe being so bold as to wash her back... While in the background you hear Nanoha repeatedly saying "Fate-chan," trying to get her attention to tell her the plan has changed and they're meeting up with everyone at the public baths.

Of course poor Fate being a magically-created person to fulfill one purpose, has never had a boyfriend.

There is no man living, dead, or fictional that could ever be good enough for Feito-chan.

Why would she need a boyfriend when she already has a wife?:sdsmiley:

Putting a serious character in the middle of a ridiculous situation and seeing them flustered and or confused is fine. Making that a regular part of a series/character is fine too. Suddenly doing this to a previously established character who didn't act like that before reeks of character derailment or poor writing (or even both).

So, no, I don't want to see any serious characters become comic relief part way through a show.

Because she needs to try a husband/boyfriend. True the only kindness she has known has been from another female (after being beaten by her) but also the only cruelty So normal males are "undiscovered" (& the guys in MGLN/As don't count).

Yes. I'd like to see Fate dating a nice guy. Nanoha can have the ferret, or Arf if she wants another female!

Um, maybe I misinterpret, but:
Aren't "cool serious characters" USUALLY the comedy-relief, when they're frustrated by not being able to impose logic, discipline and order on the goofier/less-coordinated colleagues they have to take orders from?

(Taking as precedent Zelgadis, Piccolo, Shutarou Mendou, Yomi, and Chiaki from "Nodami Cantabile"?)

I wouldn't consider Piccolo to be a comedy relief character.

I don't follow your logic. Because a girl hasn't had any experience mixing with males and getting kindness from them, she needs to have a boyfriend/husband? Try posting that on the shoujoai forums and see how many real life lesbians will rage at you for that remark.

Have you not seen A's?

Fate is as human as anyone else in the series (assuming Midchildans are human, but we'll run with that assumption). This was confirmed in episode 6 after the battle with the Wolkenritter. She's a clone of Alicia, no more, no less. Completely human, just born a little differently. To essentially quote Lindy

The Major is way too cool to ever do comedy.

However I would like to see Gendo Ikari do a standup routine.

I dunno, I thought her hacking Batou and making him punch himself was downright hilarious.

Motoko (SAC TV continuity) cracked me up quite a few times. Her "humor" is just very dry, and not in a "comic relief" fashion. I wouldn't mind seeing a 4koma-like GitS spinoff anime though... =P

I really wish SAC Motoko had been made more like the manga Motoko. The latter definitely had a sense of humour. SAC is too influenced by the movies' solemnity IMO.

Well, compared to the movies, she was more like manga Motoko. Personally I think SAC Motoko is the best balanced one of all. She's often times quite playful, but in a stern, dry way. It's a weird but intriguing mix.

Only times I laughed out loud for SAC was 1) At the end of the fight with the giant robot 2) How Motoko dealt with that lady doctor.

And in 2nd Gig when she was mock-tempting that boy.

But Motoko's girlfriend(s) must see something in her.
