Man you're a life saver :bowsmiley: i just placed an order yesterday (to shipped next month though) for the whole show on DVDs as that i don't believe that it will get an R1 release anytime soon. Now i have a better alternative :) i just hope that the release won't have the same boarders on the sides like the Gunbuster movie

Cool, the 1st Go Nagai show on High Definition is a done deal for me :noodle:

I really loved and enjoyed this show very much, probably my only take on it was not casting Tohru Furaya as Hiroshi Shiba when the show is semi-sequel to the original 73 show....oh well.

Hmm, I'd rather have the original Jeeg on Blu-ray, to be honest. When that happens I'll probably get this.

I don't see the logic there....

I haven't yet seen all of Jeeg yet. Logical enough for you?

The show was broadcast and released on DVD in 1.78:1 widescreen, so no, no window-boxing here.

A bit too rich for my blood, but very cool none the less. It's a fun retro styled show, even without having seen the original Koutetsu Jeeg, and I'm a bit surprised it was animated in HD. (I don't see anything in the solicitation that screams "Upscale", at least...)

And I've seen none of Jeeg, and still watched Koutetsushin Jeeg.

Its not really a sequel.

I don't really care, I'd rather see all of the original first to better appreciate it. And I probably won't get around to that for some time, unless it comes to Blu-ray to give me a bigger incentive for watching it. There's too many other things I'd rather buy on Blu-ray before Kotetsushin.

I watched & own the original show and i can say that it's actually a semi sequel and has some elements & references from the original show. As the show's description stated (at that time), it is a sequel to the 73 show and take place 50 years after, yet it continues the story after the 1st part of the original and leaves the 2nd. I guess you can say it's a semi-sequel/semi remake.

Yes. I know.

Yes. I know.

Then why argue? Some people care about seeing sequels after the original, some don't.

Go Nagai (and the people who create anime based on his creations) in particular has a very lucid concept of "continuity", and remake vs sequel, so I've learned to go either way, circumstances depending.

It just struck me as odd to hinge the purchase of KSJ on the vague offchance there will be a Blu-Ray release of the 37 year old original series, that its only "kinda" a sequel to.

*cough*

I thought i should remove some of the dust on this thread first :P

I received my Koutetsushin Jeeg BD set few days ago and got to watch the 1st Eps yesterday.

Well since i am clueless when it comes to technical aspects i'll mention my thoughts about the set in overall.

The set and it's cases have new covers, and they're very nice :)

The set features 2 BD cases, each with 2 discs. Plus a super comprehensive booklet "Magnetic Liner Note" which features info about the show, eps, interviews, and more important gallery. The last part is the most important one as that it has all the KSJ DVD covers, promotional works, characters & Mechas sketches, and the new BD ones as well (yes they're new from the DVD ones).

As it was mentioned before, the show is in 1080I and it looks solid on BD especially the scenes that have 3D effects. But since i didn't get the chance to watch the show before on DVD perhaps it could be just a simple upscale.

Also, since the show was originally broadcasted in 16:9 the picture is fully shown and displayed on the screen. Thank god for that as that i hate the pesky boarders or window-boxing.

The sound doesn't sound like a super HD (aka: Metal Gear Solid 4 level), however, it is as good as any US/JP movies with DTS sound that i have played on my PS3 so far. But then again, i am not an expert in that department so it's just my impression :)

Final word, while i might be a bit biased toward old school shows (or ones with such style) in general especially Go Nagai ones. I think that buying the set at it's full price might be a bit too much, but with amazon's 25% discount and with discount points you can still get the show (if you wish to) at a reasonable price. I got mine for about ¥ 23,000 (since i didn't use much points lately).

I don't know if there is any part that overlooked but please feel to ask any non-technical questions if you wish :sd:

One last thing, out of coursity; how is the set selling in Japan ?

Next stop: Shin Mazinger Z

Update:

I finished watching (or rather re-watching) the 4 discs and i am happy with the release. I think that this is probably as best as possible the show can be made into BD.

There is nothing about the Regional Coding on the discs or the set itself. CD Japan mentions that it's a Region Free, while Playasia mentions that it'sa Region A. I think it would be safe to assume that it's a Region A.

Extras:

The last disc has a 7 min. interview with Go Nagai, and a clean OP & ED. The last part isn't much since the text is part of the art in the OP, and ED has the screen divided into 1/2 for the black part of the credit.

Final thought:

i enjoyed re-watching the show again on HD even though i wish if the Ending was a bit better. Or if the show had few more Eps to feature more of the Jeeg team in action (which i liked more than the Hyper Shin Jeeg ).
