It came out last friday, hardly "a while ago",

http://www.asianblurayguide.com/capture/534/geneon_promo_disc_2008_anime_japan/ they posted some pics from Geneons Promo disk that showcased the quality.

scroll to the bottom to see some pics from it.

someone on amazon took some pics of the box.

The set looks amazing though, but a little too expensive for a raw for me.

iirc. tale of memories is upscaled - tale of melodies is native HD

I have ef: Memories and it's 1080p24. It was probably animated at less than 1980x1080 but it certainly doesn't look like an upscale from 480p or thereabouts.

iirc i think it's not made in 1080p but it is higher that 480p. It was only made a year ago but still can't be to certain about these things . Is there any way to check to make sure. Even if it was made in 720p is still better than dvd .

Buster darkwings did you buy R2 dvds ? How does compare to that .

The preview of it on the Rondo Robe preview disc definitely looked great, better than a usual upscale.

But I can't tell if they redid one scene in 1080p for the preview disc or something...
Anyway, I think it's a no-brainer if you want to buy the series and don't already own the DVDs. If you have the DVDs then it's a bit more of a decision...

If you have a BD drive and can take screenshots, you can do a downscale-upscale test in Photoshop like people do for video games. From my readings on 2ch and other Japanese sources, a lot of HD anime is indeed animated at around 720p (or 960x540 as is rumored for Macross F), so it obviously won't look perfect at 1080p but it will look much better than the DVDs.

No, I didn't buy them. But it doesn't look like an upscale on my 100" projector screen and I don't believe anyone on 2ch has said it's an upscale. The HD broadcast was said to be an upscale I believe, but this has happened with other shows as well such as the first few episodes of Macross F, and the Blu-rays for that show are certainly not an upscale.

Impressions on the ef memories box have been very good. Only complaint I've seen is occasional compression artifacts.

Regarding the source resolution, this blogger is confident it's 1280x720:

1920x1080 source digital HD TV series seem to be extraordinarly rare at this point (just One Piece and Ojarumaru?) though there are some in between 720 and 1080.
