Anime Newsnetwork confirmed that the new FMA will premiere in Japan in April via this article. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-01-11/new-fullmetal-alchemist-anime-staff-confirmed
I wonder if Funimation will follow suit with Viz's Naruto Shippudan strategy of broadcasting each episode a few hours after airing. If they don't piracy will run rampant. While the show has not been licensed or at least not announced yet Funimation had said that anything FMA that comes out they immediately pickup so it's pretty safe to assume they will get it. The question is, how will the combat piracy and appease fans at the same time?

...and yet they still seem content to not actually tell us what this series is. They call it in the story a "new adaptation of the [manga]", but that could mean a lot of things. Until I hear an answer on that, I'm going to temper my enthusiasm. I'm especially disappointed that the TV series composer won't be returning for this one, as they did excellent work on the original TV series.

Oooh, another FMA series... *dance of joy*
I wonder if it takes place right after the movie...or ?? I hope it's a sequel, not a re-adaptation.
*fingers crossed*

Nice. Like everyone, I'm curious to see where this is going to begin. Hoping for where the anime and manga began branching off, but I guess we'll see.

There's no reason to assume that it's a sequel; aside from the implications that it's a more faithful adaption of the manga this time, you also have the fact that nothing else can be done after the movie.

Newtype's out this week. Part of the scoop has been reported on 2ch.
Director: Yasuhiro Irie
Series Composition: Hiroshi Ohnogi
Character Design: Hiroki Kanno
Music: Akira Senju
Animation Production: BONES
Hopefully more news pops up soon.

It's a manga adaptation. The director confirms it in the Gangan and Newtype interviews. It might not be a *straight* manga adaptation reboot from the start though, from the impression I'm getting. They're not revealing how the series starts yet, but it'll be bad for ratings if they start right from the beginning even if they do it faithfully because a lot of the content will have been seen before. It's also impossible to adapt ~100 chapters of FMA in 50 or so episodes, so I'm sure BONES has something smarter planned.... I hope.

For fan's sake i hope they don't change the original seiyuu of the show  i mean Romi Paku is Edward no matter how i try to imagine the character.
PS: I am referring to the original Japanese audio only, so please don't turn this into another dub vs sub thread.

This is nice to heard! I only hope they will continue it after the tv series and forget the movie.

Not exactly, it's reportedly a full adaptation of the manga, whereas the original anime was mostly canon in the first half, then it second half slowly verged from the manga until the final 15 or so episodes were completely original (the mangaka helped them make the new story though).
It definitely can't be a sequel to the original anime, since the trailer shows Mustang with both eyes intact.
I really hopes BONES does this right. I am worried, because apparently it's only going to be 50 episodes (can't BONES do 2 seasons, or is that against their policy or something?) and no way can they do the full manga in 50 episodes (even picking up where Vol. 7, the changing point between the manga and the original anime, left off would be pushing it). I hate having to doubt my favorite studio....... :(

Just because they announce it for 50 episodes doesn't mean they can't do more after that.

I have faith Bones can pull something interesting, even with deviations. I actually thought their interpretation of the second half of the series was superior to what the manga's turned into, which is actually even more "out there" than the animated series. But regardless they seem pretty dependable with their manga adaptations. Even Soul Eater wound up pretty good.

I'm still eager to watch the new FMA series even if it's not a sequel. How would you know Mustang isn't using a glass eyeball. ;)

That's all I needed. This new FMA series just went up a couple more slots on my "Most Anticipated" list.

Yeah i like his works, shame his massive influence on Macross Frontier will never be shown on ANN, he took over Sheryl's character from episode 18-24, shame Kawamori stepped in for 25 :(

I hope. But I don't see how it could be possible to not do an adaptation straight from the beginning because even in the manga-based episodes the original TV series adapted, there are major differences between the storylines. Like the whole Nina/Tucker subplot and the whole subplot about the death of Winry's parents was handled differently in the anime version of the manga-based episodes, and so was the whole story of how Ed became a State AlchemistThe only way I could see them possibly pulling it off like that is to show it in flashbacks like Yugioh Duel Monsters showed the manga chapters from the pre-Duel Monsters arc they didn't animate in the second series but I don't know how well that would work for a series like FMA
