4) A major newspaper in Japan is reporting that a second season of the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is in the works, and that more details will be in next months issue of Newtype magazine. I would hope so!

RACS newsletter is reporting it,as appearing in a major newspaper, anyone know more ?

I wonder how far along in pre production it is now...

We've known that its been in production, but not much past that.

There's been rumors of contract disputes involving the author and publisher that may have been holding things up.

There's really no way they won't make more.. by oricon data it's like the 4th best selling tv series this decade... only behind the two Gundam SEED series and Code Geass. (though Macross F & CG R2 after 4 volumes are on pace to outsell it by about 6-8k per volume atm)

It's been at about this stage forever, but regardless of what news comes out of Newtype next month I think it's unlikely to come before the fall. Kyoto Animation is doing two shows for the first time right now, and once they're left with just Munto in the spring I doubt they'd tackle Haruhi with anything less than 100% of the resources they have at their disposal which would mean summer at the earliest. Fall is usually the more prominent season for bigger titles so there we have it. Of course it could be that they've grown enough to have two fully separate production teams now, but I don't think getting "big" is what Kyoto Animation is into.

Thought this was one cour, and thus will be over before the spring season (i.e. ending when Clannad does)?

The Anime News Network encyclopedia agrees with you (listing 13 episodes for the show).

ANN however is not the most reliable source ever.

That being said, Winter/Summer shows are marginally more likely to be one cour than two cour, while Spring/Fall shows are the other way around.

True, though they're often wrong this early on (and only 4 of those have titles). It may just be that theres no official word yet. This site (http://cal.syoboi.jp/tid/1544/time) lists an odd mix of 12 and 13 eps, but again they can't go on what hasn't been confirmed yet either.

Best bet would be finding out how many dvds it's set for.

I'm somewhat curious if season two will be The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:<insert subtitle here> or The Dissapearance of Haruhi Suzumiya after the fourth novel, which will undoubtably be the backbone of the second season, as Melancholy was for season 1

For every show that has no stated episode count ANN default to listing it as 13 episodes because that is the length of one cour which is the minimum a series goes for. Look at Hajime no Ippo's sequel, that's listed as 13 episodes but it's going to go way past that.... only have 40+ volumes of manga material to go through...

I have heard that the second season IS in the works. I do know we in the US are going to get the light novels in english soon. I think Yen Press ( the ones doing the manga ) are going to publish them.

Well, it was announced that there would be one, but nothing concrete has come out so we don't have any idea how much has actually been done.

Correct, Yen Press is publishing them and the first volume is scheduled for release on April 1st. However, while Yen Press is doing what I think should have been done with a number of titles, light novels have been a failure and I don't expect Haruhi to buck the trend. I'm looking forward to yet another incomplete novel series.

I had not sen that yet. Last speculation I read was two cour, but one is probably better for Munto anyway.
