Burn Up W?

I was checking out Animetric and reading some reviews of old out-of-print titles and I came across "Burn Up" a popluar series that ADV licensed in the late 1990s and found this OAV: Burn Up W. Which I'm interested in picking up.

First of all, I ask the simple typical questions: Is it good? Is it easy too find? What's the Japanese sub like? I read that the ADR script was handled by the husband and wife former ADV voice acting team Amanda Winn and Jason Lee.

Now I'll ask this question: How much fan service does it contain? The animetric review said that it's not for children so it much be pretty ecchi. Even ANN's 2002 review said Qoute " I also recommend staying clear if perverted scenes (not rated X or remotely close) or brief nudity offends you."

I liked it, but I consider myself a fan of the franchise so I might be a little biased. :knowitall:

It's a pretty good show for what is: girls with guns. There's some brief nudity and a couple scenes of the girl(s) undressing. Nothing that would rate it more than "15+" with the old ADV rating system. (I'm not near mine now to check it.) There is also some sexual innuendo that runs throughout the series, but nothing that approaches the level of more modern series.

As for a source, I got mine from Right Stuf years ago and I don't see it listed there anymore nor at Anime Corner Store or Anime Nation. If you can find it for it's original price or less it's a worthy pickup, but not if the price has been inflated on the secondhand market.

Now you have to be careful on which 'Burn Up' series you're talking, as there quite a few of them... All of the series are classic 'Girls with Guns' genre series, with fanservice galore...

The original 'Burn Up!' OVA, which is the most 'serious' of the bunch...

As other people have mentioned, the franchise is no where close to being an award winning series, just good clean fanservice rich fun...

All of these series where Pioneer LDC/Pioneer Entertainment/GENEON USA titles, and as such, are now out of print, with the older titles somewhat hard to find...

Ah Burn Up W, one of my first branching out experiments back in the day. ;)

I got it when it was first released, after ADV sent me a postcard saying if I preordered I'd get a free T-shirt with it. I did, and it was very red, and very huge. :sd: I took a chance mainly because it was AIC (the first studio I had become a fan of), as I knew very little else about it.

As others have said, it's lots of fanservice with guns. It's only 4 episodes, but the first two are very different from the last two. It starts as a police comedy, but then it gets surprisingly violent in the second half.

It's nothing spectacular and I haven't watched it in years, but someday I'll dust it off and give it another go, I'm sure. It's just a genre that I never really got into.

Knowing your tastes for the old school look, I'd say give the priority to the original Burn Up! OVA. It has the great old school character designs and all. It is by far the most violent of the burn up series I have seen though.

I have watched the Burn Up Scramble series the most recently and it was probably the closest thing to Dirty Pair in feel at least for the first two girls.

I still need to pick up more Burn Up stuff as I am missing some DVDs across the various series.

Burn Up W's a forgettable piece of fluff, but enjoyable to see at least once.

Burn Up, Burn Up W & Burn Up Excess were ADV releases. Only Burn Up Scramble was Geneon US.

And that raises a question, being will ADV release them in sets. Is Scramble worth rescuing by ADV to complete their collection, if they still have one...?
