I'm rapidly running out of R1 released shows I want, for whatever reason, but easily spend a lottery win on R2J, if certain shows had English subtitles.
Shows I've passed on getting a R2 release so far are;
City Hunter
Macross F
Macross 7
Clannad
Clannad After Story
Clannad movie
Touch TV
H2O
First Gundam TV
Gundam X
Turn A Gundam
and nearly every anime BD
as many Japanese live action movies are getting R2 releases with English subtitles, why is anime not getting the same treatment?
What extra anime R2s would you buy if they were subtitled?

I'd consider a few, but it's have to be one of my favorite shows ever, and I'd have to be 99.9999999% sure they'd never ever ever get licensed. Touka Gettan is, right now, probably the only one that'd rank highly on the list. It's still goddamn expensive though.
But if Clannad After Story had english subs, there's a chance I would have grabbed it in a fit of utter insanity back while I was on a severe high after hearing Toki wo Kizamu Uta for the first time. I'm more than a little glad I kept my cool. Like, $600 glad or so.
Note, of course, that I say this as someone who is not an R2 buyer, so it's not so much "extra" releases as buying R2s "at all". The only R2 I own is the Maikaze Touhou doujin anime.

Uh, I doubt I'd buy more than I am at the moment, to be honest.

None. If the show can't interest me enough to pay for it without subs, having subs is not going to make any difference. What's far more important to me is quality - I'm only buying Blu-rays at this point. If a show I liked had a DVD release with subs and a BD without subs, I'd either get the BD or nothing at all.

In general if a show i like is available on R2 J (DVD or BD) with sub then it's an automatic winner for me weather it's available on R1 or not. Why ? because the R2's quality is something that the R1 market is way behind or simply quality isn't the main concern for them (for most companies & buyers). That's probably one of the reasons that we are still getting defective DVDs from some unnamed companies even though they have been making DVDs for more than a decade ?
The bottom line, i prefer R2s because i get what i pay for (sub or not). Of course, i'll be more than glad to pay and invest more if they include English sub for DVDs/BDs.
My friend bought 2 single City Hunter DVDs (R2s) and i really felt jealous of the quality when comparing it to ADV's release. But for the LE set's price (around $ 1,000) i was hoping that they would have included English sub at least (given that they exist). Hopefully that will be the case for any future BD release for it and for Angel Heart. Yeah i know it won't happen but i can always wish

Hmm... I did have my eye on those To Aru Majutsu no Index Blu-rays that are just coming out. I'd love to see that in Blu-ray if it had subtitles.

.... I purchased disk 1 on R2(J) for H2O, but never got around to picking up the rest ....
With respect to the OP's question, well probably as much as I could afford as I would probably pick things up from there instead of waiting for them on R1. I do have Clannad, Clannad Movie, Ef ~A Tale of Memories~, School Days, all the non-R1 licensed ToHeart/ToHeart2 on R2(J) even without subs and am currently getting Clannad After Story and will be getting the 4th season of Maria-sama Ga Miteru.

Like Skywise, the lack of English subtitles doesn't dissuade me from importing R2J discs I want, nor would the inclusion of English subtitles motivate me to pick up any titles I might have been on the fence about otherwise.

If every R2J release had english subs as standard, I'd pretty much shun the R1 market! ^_^

Also gotta say that if I'm interested in buying a Japanese DVD, English subtitles don't factor into the equation. I'm so used to Japanese DVDs not having subtitles of any kind, English subtitles are like a bonus feature. If there is any on the fence title that pushed me, I'd guess it was Umi ga Kikoeru, but I think the deciding factor there was its inavailablity on R1, not that it was English subtitled. I'd certainly get R1s for R2s I have with English subtitles (woohoo bonus translation, support the industry, etc), but I can't see myself buying or rebuying any R2s simply because they have English subs, nor can I see a case where I'd be thinking "I'm not sure if I want *THIS* $50 R2, but it has English subs so I'll buy it."
Now, having Japanese subtitles is a factor for what I rent. All of the pre-Les Miserables World Masterpiece Theatre DVDs have Japanese subtitles, which is why I end up renting and watching so many of those shows.
Why don't anime DVDs have subtitles? Well, it's more likely for a single movie to have subtitles than an entire TV series because a single movie is probably going to sell more and requires less work. Japanese subtitles also take much more time to generate than English subtitles because you're talking about encoding a character set of several thousand different symbols versues less than one hundred letters and punctation marks.
Now what I really don't understand is why most anime TV broadcasts have optional Japanese close captioned subtitles, yet the DVDs don't contain any subtitles at all. It's like they're just throwing away a perfectly good subtitle track. Such a waste!!

No they don't. The time needed to create Japanese subs is the same as you'd need for English ones, with the difference being in whether a translation is needed or not.

The official Korean release of Robot Carnival has English subtitles, but unfortunately they're dubtitles. It went out of print pretty fast so I guess it's just as well.

To be honest, it's been a very long time since I purchased an R2. Part of the problem has been limited budget and the internal conflict. The conflict between giving up all hope and just going for it vs holding out just a bit longer to see if a license comes up. Hence forth if I were to ever do another R2 purchase, it would have to be a decision made with the utmost care.
It would be easy to say that the "English Sub" would be a positive incentive to any title. After all, assuming the series in question is subbed decently enough, it's more watchable than a raw would be.
However the reality of it is this. Any title I were to list here would boil down to the following. It would be a case of "If I could actually afford it, I'd go for it". And if I could afford the said title, I'd be going for it regardless of whether or not it was subbed.
Granted the problem is "afford" is a vague term. I probably couldn't afford the few R2s that I have. Yet I still got them. Heck, in my current state collecting an R2 would probably be unfeasible. Yet, I'm seriously tempted to.

I would definitely feel more tempted to get certain shows (like Mahoujin Guru Guru, Heidi of the Alps, and Tonde Buurin) if only subs were available. I have to really, truly want the show, with no other alternatives available and knowing it will never ever be licensed at this point, before I consider getting the R2 version. And with money so pathetically tight, I'm rarely able to actually get something.
