Good to finally have news about this.
And, if nothing else, it will allow for some much needed variety in Mazinger's apparently divinely mandated eternal slot in SRW.

Indiscretion?
Anyway this "is" Z Mazinger, or more accurately, what the original vague ideas behind it ended up becoming. Apparently they decided to do a remake of Mazinger Z proper, instead of the Z Mazinger manga.
I think thats a little lame, but hey, at least its something.

Well, I don't know, but there were rumors in 2CH (http://justiceace.wordpress.com/2009/01/10/koji-kabuto-hasnt-died-in-magma/) (from Justice Ace) about that... take them with a very small grain of salt.

While this all seems suspicious, the prospect of Grendizer being involved sounds interesting.
In the mean time, I will continue watching Grendizer's french dub (followed by other Mazin mythos shows, of course).

The title itself translates to "Shin Mazinger Shock! Z Chapter". Could they be so awesome as to put, right in the title, their intention to do more after this? Or are they simply going to change titles as the show gets further into its run? It's definitely hard for me to believe they would do more than 26 episodes of this, since 26 already feels like a godsend to me.
According to Moon Phase, this series was originally helmed by Palm Studio (which had worked with Imagawa on Tetsujin 28 and Bartender), until the company went belly-up, which may explain why it took so long for this to come out (wasn't Go Nagai or someone hinting about this for 2 or 3 years?). The new studio, Studio Code, is made up of former Palm Studio staff.
Just glancing through Google, it looks like a couple of the characters listed are from other Go Nagai manga, perhaps similar to Imagawa's Giant Robo.
Last note: JAM Project leader Hironobu Kageyama has been having spasms on his blog recently, talking about an cool project that they've been working on, which is apparently killing him that he can't talk about yet. Related?

Very nice !! Perhaps Z Mazinger will be made later. Since this is a Mazinger Z remake then there is a very good chance for Great Mazinger & Grendizer to appear at a latter stage in the show, or even better in a 2nd season :)
It would be very hard for me to listen to Kouji not being voiced by his type-casted seiyuu: Hiroya Ishimaru, but since this isn't a semi-sequel/remake like Mazinkaizer then i am ok with the seiyuu changes as long as they give the same feeling of the characters from the manga and so.
Now that's an automatic must get for BD when it comes out in Japan :)

A Giant Robo-type remake seems to be a good idea, making the prospect of licensing a Mazin mythos show less daunting.
I still wish Mazinkaiser - Shitou! Ankoku Dai Shogun would get brought over here already, though. :(

I couldn't agree more but it doesn't seem that their sales figures for Mazinkaizer OVAs and the 2 Shin Getter Robo (ADV & Geneon's) were that good to inspire them or any other R1 company to license any more of Go Nagai shows like Mazinkaizer vs Ankuko Dai Shogun, and Kotetsushin Jeeg :depressed:

1-Upper Left: Zeus from the Z-Mazinger manga
2-Upper Right Count Blocken's Air Fortress Gore Dropping a sphere (apparently a Kikaiju)
3-Under the sphere: Hover Pilder in it's traditional red color
4-Center Right: the Mazinger Army (Million Alpha, Baion Beta y Daion Gamma, they appear in the MazinKaiser VS Dark General of Darkness ova) flying toward Gore
5-Besides the Mazinger Army: Afrodite A (Manga Version)
6-Bottom: the remnants of Garada K-7 and Doublas M2 (Traditional Mazinger Z Kikaiju)
7-Mazinger Z (Manga Version) with the Z Mazinger Jet Scrander
8-Apparently Zeus' Flying Punch
This looks awesome!

Pretty basic info on the website as far as plot and characters; nothing that would surprise old Mazinger fans.
Far more interesting is the fact that they intend to broadcast this in the spring. Er, isn't it a little late to be announcing that? That's only a month away - usually shows get a bigger push than that. I hope it doesn't mean they've been rushing through production to get it on the air.

Okay... I have mixed feelings on this.
This is suppose to be an adaption of Z Mazinger right? Then why are they using designs from the Mazinger Z manga? Not that I'm complaining, I prefer these but it just seems odd.
Second, I'm not impressed by the voicecast. Most of the actors seem to be new in the industry. And Hiroya Ishimaru isn't voicing Kouji. WHY. I can deal with the rest of the new cast, but Ishimaru IS Kabuto Kouji.
I'm willing to give this a chance, hopefully it won't be as awful as Cutie Honey the Live or Shinkotetsu Jeegu. Doubt it'll be as bitchin' as Mazinkaiser.

This has always been "Mazinger as done by Imagawa". The project has presumably gone through several temporary names, but there's no doubt in my mind that this has always been about Imagawa making a brand-new Mazinger story, unrelated to any past stories, much like his earlier Giant Robo and Shin Getter Robo. The idea that someone would put Imagawa in charge of directing a straightforward adaptation of an obscure existing story always seemed kinda silly to me. Much like the "Imagawa quits and is replaced by random fan-favorite directors" rumor, this is just something that fans really grabbed onto for no good reason.

Because he's OLD. He already sounds really strained in 7 episodes of Mazinkaiser, on an OVA schedule. SRW is fine, but you don't want to put him through 26 episodes on a TV schedule as the teenaged lead character.
Shin Getter Robo replaced all the voices too, and they all turned out great.

Well even though i liked the new seiyuu for the Shin Getter series (all three) i can still hear Akira Kamiya's voice in my head performing the same lines of Hideo Ishikawa. But for Hiroya Ishimaru it's a bit different as that he's been type-casted as Kouji for the last three decades, pretty much like Shuuchei Ikeda for Char, and Tohru Furaya for Amuro.
While he surly sounds older now than he was 37 years ago he still maintains the same style of the character, IMHO at least. Just like the Lupin III cast who have now been voicing their roles for quite some time.
Anyway, i am willing to keep an open mind about the seiyuu change as long as they still provide the same style and feeling of the characters. Perhaps having many new/unkown seiyuu for the roles can be an advantage because i wouldn't want to hear for example Kouji voiced by ones that have been associated with many roles and so.

Perhaps i am a bit biased regarding Go Nagai shows, but i would give the show an A- (minus for replacing Tohru Furaya as Shiba Hiroshi) as that it was intended as a simple good vs evil show just like the typical Super Robot shows in the 70s, with some upgrades and changes. Perhaps i gave it a bit more than it might get since i was comparing it to Dancouga Nova (i was watching it at the same time with KSJ), which didn't impress me at all (except for 2 songs in the show).
Oh well there is nothing wrong if people like it or not, this how things work out in life :)

A CD site has broken (http://item.rakuten.co.jp/ebest-dvd/0000000919659/) the news of Shin Mazinger's OP. It will be performed by a special group called "ULTIMATE LAZY for MAZINGER", which consists of LAZY (Hironobu Kageyama's original band), Tamio Okuda and Kazuyoshi Saito (established Japanese artists who supported LAZY in their last live show), and JAM Project. This looks like a big deal for music company Lantis (which was also founded by a LAZY band member), and for long-time fans of Japanese music; maybe not so much for more casual fans like us.
I should note that Kageyama is the only singer in LAZY; most likely this group is just JAM Project, only with LAZY, Okuda, and Saito on instruments.
And, of course, there's one name that is noticeably NOT on this list as of yet, but we'll wait until the formal announcement comes down before getting further into that.

Well i would like to believe that too but the fact that they re-casted Kouji Kabuto and the 4 characters whom seiyuu reprised their roles in the Mazinkaizer OVAs, makes me think that they want to reboot the franchise away from the original one. Which is fine for me as long as the show isn't sacrificed to appeal more to wider/casual audiance. Though given how most of the Go Nagai remakes were done over the past years, i am not worried about that part much.

But there's a difference in having older people voice characters for 26 episodes and having 1 older person sing a song.
The one who has to sing a song has a MUCH easier job than those who would have to do voices for 26 episodes. Also, age just makes it harder to maintain a well-known performance... For example, Akira Kamiya doesn't voice Kenshiro in any of the Hokuto no Ken productions anymore, because he most likely can't do a proper "WATAHHH!" anymore. Thankfully, all of the replacements since the New FOTNS OVA have been excellent.

To the best of my knowledge, the main reason Shin Hokuto No Ken (2003 OVAs) weren't that popular among HNK fans was that they got pissed from Takuhito Koyasu voicing Kenshiro instead of Akira Kamiya, not that i don't like Takuhito, but he didn't and never fitted the role IMHO. However, Kunihiro Kawanoto (Sammy's fighting game) and Hiroshi Abe (New Savior Saga) are very good voices for Kenshiro too, but none gave the same legendary "WATAAAAA" of Akira. Again that's just IMO :)
But going back to Mazinger, as i mentioned earlier that it's a bit different for Hiroya Ishimaru as that he has been already type-casted for the role of Kouji just like Tohru Furaya for Amuro Rei. I would imagine an uproar if Akira was replaced for his most beloved role of Saeba Ryo in Angel Heart, but thank god that didn't happen.

A March 4 blog entry from Gakken's Animedia magazine reports that the production staff of the upcoming Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime wrote a note to emphasize that the project is a separate work from the Mazinger Z television anime of the 1970s. The Shin Mazinger staff further requested that the magazine not use phrases such as "Mazinger Z remake" or a "new Mazinger Z." (Similar to the 2000 Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo video anime series, the "Shin" in Shin Mazinger's title is the Japanese character that means "true" and not the character that means "new." All of these projects originated from Go Nagai's manga.) In fact, the magazine says that the Shin Mazinger staff asked that the magazine avoid mentioning the old television series to introduce the new series and avoid using the phrase "Mazinger Z" in big letters in article captions and such.
The Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime series will premiere in Japan on April 4.
I am not sure what they mean exactly by that, anyway let's wait and see how the show turns. Perhaps that's one the reasons for the re-casting of the character ?

The official announcement (http://lantis.jp/news/all.php?subaction=showfull&id=1236238816&archive=&start_from=&ucat=1&) on the OP is out. The song is "Kanjite Knight", a remake of a classic LAZY song "Kanjite Night". The song will use recordings of past live performances by Munetaka Higuchi (drums) and Hiroyuki Tanaka (bass) prior to their deaths, along with new recordings from the surviving members, bringing the original members together one last time. Tamio Okuda, Kazuyoshi Saito, and JAM Project are "support members".
It's pretty clear now why LAZY gets top billing on this one. Any guesses on ED?

Lantis put up their webpage (http://lantis.jp/news/all.php?subaction=showfull&id=1237432315&archive=&start_from=&ucat=3&) for this show, which reveals the ED. It's "Brand new world" by new artist Natsuko Asou. Well, checking her Wikipedia page, it looks like she's done a couple of things before. Apparently, she played the character of Chisame Hasegawa in the live-action version of Negima. Anyway, the point seems to be, she's new to Lantis, and to anime music in general.
It's . . . an interesting choice. While I'll hold off on judgment until we actually hear the song, it seems an odd fit on the surface.

Well, sure. I just thought it was odd for an 18-year-old girl to start a career with such an old-school title. I can't imagine this is going to raise her name recognition much.
Incidentally, that Lantis page seems to have scrubbed away any hint of the ED info. Guess that wasn't supposed to get out just yet. Whoops. I can't find this information mentioned anywhere else for the moment, so consider this an exclusive scoop.

Calling it "old school" is, I think, somewhat missing the entire point of what they are trying to do with this. They already HAVE the "old school" fans, they are trying to get the newer fans, the people who didn't grow up with Mazinger in their childhood, who mainly know it from references and Super Robot Wars.

You can make a show targeting new fans that is still "old school". And you can be a new fan while still liking "old school" stuff. I appreciate that they're trying to create a standalone show without any connection to the existing material (hence their silly "This is not a remake" announcement), but I highly doubt Shin Mazinger is going to draw in anybody who doesn't like that kind of "old school" sensibility.
So yeah, in that sense, I consider this an "old school" show. That isn't to suggest that newer fans won't like it, but I think they do have to be willing to at least take that kind of stuff with an open mind.

I do agree to a great extend with you as that i have seen some new/younger fans who refuses to watch remakes, sequels of older shows as that they believe that they're targeted for the old guards and so. Of course, it can go the other way around for older fans who tend to slap every new anime (remake or completely new) as fluffy or cheap mainstream etc.
Now about Shin Mazinger, it seems to me that they're adapting the (Change) Shin Getter Robo & New Getter Robo approach to Mazinger Z instead of the semi-sequel/semi-remakes style of Kotetsushin Jeeg, Mazinkaizer or Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter.
And given that it worked out pretty well with the Shin Getter shows i see no reason for this not to work out with Mazinger as well. Keeping in mind, that the success of the this show might lead to more seasons (or new shows) featuring Great & Grendizer or even more of the Dynamic characters down the line.
It's probably hard for many Mazinger fans (older & younger ones) to have a Mazinger show without Aniking or Hiroya Ishimaru, but hey a new Mazinger show is an automatic winner for me. It will take them way a lot more than a just changing the seiyuu to put me off from watching/buying the show when it comes out. Beside we might really enjoy the new cast as an alternative take on the characters :)
I guess we'll have to wait and see until the show starts......darn it i can't wait......MAZIN GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
