View Full Version : Who is your favorite anime trap/cross gender character?

It seems that whenever I glance through a thread, there's talks of traps, twincest. I started thinking "what is everyone's favorite trap character".

I decided not to do a poll for this because
1) It might reveal too many spoilers to point out the trap character in a series.
2) I'm not the master of traps so I wouldn't know all of them that have ever appeared in an anime. (don't want to leave anyone out)
3) There are enough silly polls around right now. No need to jump on the bandwagon. :)

Instead I'll just list a few series. Feel free to add in your favorite series. Also if you are going to mention names of characters be sure to use spoiler tags.

I'm not strict so even series like Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, or Kashimashi would count.

Battle Athletes OVA
H2O Footprints in the Sand
Happiness!
Minami-ke
Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru (Otoboku Maiden's are falling for me)
Utawarerumono
Black Lagoon
Maria Holic
Kino no Tabi
Stellar Buster Mito / Space Pirate Mito
Hakushaku to Yousei
Turn A Gundam

In fact the more I think about it, the more series that come to mind (tons of shoujo series for example)

Are there any preferences?

* Updated with series mentioned in this thread *
Shugo Chara
Vandread
Paradise Kiss
Hayate Combat Butler
Fushigi Yuugi (Mysterious Play)
Code Geass
Koko wa Greenwood
Gankutsuou
Lovely Complex
Seto no Hanayome
You're Under Arrest
Princess Princess
Fruits Basket
Escaflowne
My-Hime
E's Otherwise
The Devil Lady
I, My, Me! Strawberry Eggs

It might be obvious, but I'll go with Shugo Chara. Even when he returns, Nagihiko is having an identity crisis. But the girls still don't know who he once was.:P

I have to go with this one. The other "trap" character that I like is BC in Vandread - "she" is actually a male spy for Taraak.

Hmm. The mention of the one from Shugo Chara is good. That's an interesting situation there, certainly.

In general, though, traps are evil, especially the "better" they look.

Yes, traps are some of the most evil things that exist in the world. I couldn't believe there was a trap in Shugo Chara, and it was worse because they *did* look good.

Like the Vandread one. That was a real shocker when I first saw it  .

Along with the ones from Minami-ke and Shugo Chara, the other obvious one is poor Hayate from that show with the combat butler...and like the other ones, it's scary how well he looks in certain outfits...

Probably Minami-ke (both the trap & r-trap) & Maria†Holic... though honestly, I don't think the characters in either of those really need anything in the way of spoiler tags, since in the case of one the character(s) doesn't start out that way and the other it's both in the series description & revealed halfway through the first ep. :P

I'm tempted to say we should add "Linebarrels of Iron" to the list, but that's just because it's damn hard to determine the actual gender of one of the characters.

I just put it in general since most people won't mind outing characters that really are spoilers. Vandread for instance. :)

Anyone who has watched most of the series in question know which characters are being referred to even without names. I guess a more ambiguous one like Black Lagoon would take some thinking, but it can be figured out.

Now that's just evil. Mentioning that one.

Twincest in general is wrong. Crossdressing twincest is still wrong. But this…this went beyond wrong, what those two did.

Do fan creations count? Like Kyonko or Archerko?

My first (from Happiness) will always be special. Although I'm also fond of the one in Minami-ke and, of course, Hayate. Also, I must mention [Start Seto no Hanayome]Masa, who doesn't even need to be a trap to be sexually attractive, but nonetheless made one of the most interesting imoutos ever.[End Seto no Hanayome]

I just put it in general since most people won't mind outing characters that really are spoilers. Vandread for instance. :)

Wouldn't that be more of a public service announcement though? ;) "Oh shit. You mean the character I've been 'thinking' about this entire time is actually..."

Picking one from an older anime,
Nuriko from Fushigi Yugi

Lets also not forget Princess Princess :sd:

Fushigi Yugi

I can't believe I forgot that one. Especially considering how many times I've seen FY. Honestly there were times while watching the series that I forgot.

don't have a favorite coz i don't really care about them, but fwiw, there was such a character in both Kenshin and Inuyasha anime series.

oh, can we count a particular character (or two) from Cowboy Bebop? I mean, hint: one's a bizarre tranny and the other one's actual gender was not revealed until much later.

I am going to have to go with my personal favourite Seiko-chan from Lovely Complex. The episode in which everyone finds out is comedy gold. If I had seen more shoujo anime I might have seen it coming but this completely blindsided me.

I would also like to say that while watching it in japanese it took me a while to realize that V.V. was not a girl in Code Geass. It is a lot more obvious in the R1 release.

The one I will mention is thoroughly predictable: There's my favorite(?) - Peppo from Gankutsuou.

I ended up being spoiled ahead of time on that one (I always tend to hit trap spoilers it seems - ended up knowing about the one in Shugo Chara at the very beginning), but that episode still ended up being hilarious to me.

I gotta go with Shun from Koko wa Greenwood. The reveal is one of my all-time favorite anime moments. I just love that beat as the viewer and Hasukawa both figure out what's going on.

Ach, I'd totally forgotten about that one- one of my favorite characters from that series, especially toward the end.

Same with Greenwood. *smacks forehead* One of my all-time favorite shows, and I totally forgot about him (and his family). Of course, if you want to take things to an extreme, there's Cherrywood from the manga. :P

Officer Aoi Futaba from You're Under Arrest. In the original anime series and in the 1999 specials they really mock her gender a whole lot. I mean even in the series they try to maintain that Aoi is a man, but it never explains how a 7 foot tall High School Basketball star ended up living as a woman and manages to become a female police officer, she/he still wears boxers in the TV series and in the 1999 specials. But in the manga it's different. She IS a "she" but rather a futanari born with both parts Because she's considered a freak in the manga She dedicates her life to becoming a undercover police officer that's busts chikans on the subways and trains who are freaked out by her "pocket rocket". Also she and Yuriko do become very close almost mythized as a yuri couple. That becomes open in the douijns.

I really miss the "Full throttle" series and would love to see it get a license here.

First, I agree with this choice as I like both of them. Second, that's a pretty nice image. Third, I am reminded of what I'd like to see happen in the far future. Even if it is wishful thinking.

Interesting topic.

Well my favourite trap is the Minami-ke combo. Both the fact that poor Mako-chan is having an identity crisis, and Touma trying to prove to the other "male" subtly that she has boobs is pure comedy gold.

Then there's Mizuho from Otoboku, which proofs she's just an awesome trap. Same with Mariya in Maria Holic.

My favourite reverse traps has to be the guys from Princess Princess. It's just freaking wrong, but you can't help but admire them just like the guys at the school.

I always thought it was hilarious that the artwork Geneon chose to use for the artbox that came with volume 1 of Second Stage was a big hint for B.C., if people were paying attention, since that art groups the girls on one side and the guys on the other. :P

He wears a girl's school uniform for the first half of the series. Although he is wearing shorts instead of a skirt.

The Minami-ke duo are the only trap characters I have ever found funny or watchable. I'm convinced the whole fad is the universe punishing me for all those times I wondered if there could ever ben a fad more annoying than tsunderes (which ironically have been much better cast and used in the last couple years).

I don't consider Kashimashi trap material or I'd include it as well.

I'm not really sure if he's ever been mentioned in threads like this, but how about Jinno Jurika of Magic User's Club TV? I remember his ambiguousness being in interesting point first watching the series.

There's been no mention of Fisheye from from Sailor Moon SuperS here either. I think he was one of my favorites out of the Sailor Moon villains.

While I agree that many of the previously mentioned traps are adorable, Sherry from E's Otherwise is probably my favorite, because her personality is so over-the-top.

Lan Asuka from The Devil Lady hasn't been mentioned, yet. My trap-dar is usually pretty good, but up until her truth was revealed, I had suspected that she was a lesbian instead of a transgender character.

Heh, I was hoping for a permanent magic transformation by the end.
That show was..intriguing on so many levels! Apart from ridiculing lez-sexists, it also had a one-sided shoujo-ai crush, & maybe a bit of loliconism as well. IMMSE needs a rescue as it was a Geneon title.

Loved Fushigi Yugi, You're Under Arrest and Vandread. Totally did not see them coming. Agree on Strawberry Eggs as well. The one that stand out to me most right now is from the Battle Athletes OVA didn't see the Anna revelation until the moment before the revel at the hot springs . This series is BEGGING for a new sub track re-release.
