If you have more than a passing interest in the bigger picture of the creative subcultures and media-mixes intertwined with animation, comics, games, and character-culture in Japan—and especially if you want to connect with the human beings involved, both creators and fans—becoming fluent in the language will completely change your world.
So in other words, you couldn't give a shit about the normal, everyday 'non-otaku' Japanese populous and instead would focus your extensive knowledge of the language to better appreciate your own precious hobby?
Sorry if it sounds out of line, but it seems that you've gone way off the deep end in learning a language just for the sake of bettering an interest in cartoons and nerd subculture. Actually, it's one of the more selfish reasons for learning the language, given that there is so much more to the country other than games and anime.
(It also is safe to say that once somebody makes the decision to pursue a study of the language under those terms, that person is already hopelessly consumed by the hobby at that point.)
