View Full Version : Popular Series You've Never Gotten Around to Watching

Okay, you've watched 100, maybe 300 series from beginning to end. You're having a nice conversation with a fellow anime fan, just finishing a tangent on the gym coach in Girl's High, when they mention a hugely popular series and you've got nothing. Of course you know about it, but, for reasons you can't explain just never watched.
A couple from me include:
Cowboy Beebop - Oddly enough, this one's right up my ally. I've gotten the discs from the library a couple times, but never watched more than 2 episodes. I have no explanation for my apathy.
Tenchi Muyo - Saw part of the first episode, got bored, never looked back.
Trigun - Never seen a single episode. Honestly, I'm not even sure what this one's about. It looked like generic anime to me.
Afro Samauri - Samuel L. Jackson aside, I have zero interest.

Well, going off ANN's top 50 list of <strike>"most viewed"</strike> [Edit: Oops, I meant "most popular" list apparently.] (as good a source as any I guess), and excluding movies, it seems I've seen most in full. Or in the case of the long SJ shows (DBZ, Bleach, Naruto), I've seen at least two cour worth, or a lot more. In the case Wolf's Rain, I dropped it at ep 5 or so.
Seen some:
3 Death Note (TV) 8.93 6362 - Started, then got licensed. Bought to vol 8, but don't have any desire to watch thanks to spoilers.
Seen none or almost none:
8 Elfen Lied (TV) 8.55 5642 - No interest. Caught some bits of ep 1 at some point, and wasn't into the violence.
10 FLCL (OAV) 8.23 5432 - Never was willing to pay what SP was charging, and now I don't care anymore.
24 Hellsing (TV) 7.73 4043 - No interest.
30 Love Hina (TV) 7.52 3743 - Like I mentioned to Fence recently, this was always 1) too much to blind buy and 2) came out before I got into fansubs so I never did check it out. Now that I've seen it done a dozen times since, and probably better, there's no real "need" to check it out.
31 Inuyasha (TV) 7.25 3882 - No interest. Way too long.
Seen none but bought/am buying the DVDs and will watch:
44 Fate/stay night (TV) 8.19 2868 - DVDs in my backlog, will get to it before the end of the year.
45 Mushi-Shi (TV) 8.79 2655 - DVDs in my backlog, will get to it before the end of the year.
49 Eureka Seven (TV) 8.45 2625 - Just ordered the first AL set. Will get to it before the end of the year.
So once I get around to watching the last 3, I'll have seen every series in the top 50 that I have any desire to ever see.
The main deficiency of using the above list is that it misses a lot of the "old school classics" (most of which I haven't seen anyway), so it's more geared towards the last 15 years or so.
I've got a good zinger: I've never seen a single Gundam series in its entirety. Just bits and pieces of some of the old ones like 0080 and 0083 from the early days of Adult Swim/Toonami. Aside from that, going with something's top 50 ann list idea I haven't seen:
5 - Naruto
13 - Chobits
20 - Hellsing
23/30/44 - Dragonball Z (aside from a few episodes)
26/28 - Ghost in the Shell
35 - Code Geass
36 - Cardcaptor Sakura
40 - Ouran High School Host Club
42 - Gundam Wing (aside from a few episodes at random)
50 - Gundam Seed
I will probably watch Geass at some point, and I regret not seeing CCS though I probably won't ever do anything about that one. Some other things I haven't seen and wish I had are Marimite, Aria and Gurren Lagann and I plan to rectify all of those in the future, especially Aria.
On an interesting note, my numbers don't match up to something's even though I am viewing the same top 50 "most viewed" list he did. Odd. I also expanded the list to top 100 and there were far more than I had seen than ones I had not. No wonder I have no free time.

Oh, oops, I seem to have used "most popular" by accident (simple summation of votes rather than number of views) instead. Which I guess is better anyway, given the thread title. At a glance the two lists are very similar.
If I do "most viewed" the only new shows to add are:
33 .Hack//SIGN (TV) 7.01 5781
34 Sailor Moon (TV) 6.61 5771
43 Blood+ (TV) 7.70 5201
44 Dragon Ball GT (TV) 5.19 5168
I've seen a couple Sailor Moon movies, but like the the other three in the list, I have no interest in seeing the show.

Ah. I skimmed the Most Popular list, and while I won't redo I noted I had not seen 11 of the 50. That's still a lot of shows. :sd:

~From MAL's 50 Most Popular~
Dropped
- Bleach (stopped after Soul Society, tried to return for Vizard arc but it was beyond me by that point, may try again when AS catches up to where I stopped)
- Naruto + Shippuden (made it to the end of the Rasengan arc, but then I just stopped... came back for the Naruto vs. Sasuke showdown and then just moved onto other things.)
- Chobits (piss-poor adaptation, the manga is phenomenal, but the anime is just a complete bastardization of it)
- Rurouni Kenshin (I just lost interest. It wasn't bad, but it never gave me any desire to watch more than I did.)
Never Plan On Watching
- FMA: Conqueror of Shambala (after I caught up to the manga, I have no desire to finish the inferior first production)
- D.Gray-man (It just looks too bland for a shounen, and it's littered with filler from what I hear)
- Darker Than Black (Bones aside, I tried the first episode and it just felt too contrived and random, just too many plot devices controlling the characters and no one to latch onto, and I hear it gets worse as it wraps up.)
- Vampire Knight (I won't read Twilight, why would I watch this?)
- One Piece (Long anime is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG)
- Dragonball (See above)
Will Be Watching Eventually
- Soul Eater (once I get Netflix and FUNi starts releasing, definitely)
- Zero no Tsukaima (starting it once I'm done with Planetes)

Well, for me there'd be two levels: ones I've never watched any of (outside of AMVs), and ones that I've checked out the first volume or so of and then decided that I didn't care to continue. Considered using the Top 50 from ANN, but
In the first column...
Gundam Seed & 00 (and derivatives)- Didn't watch any of Seed, watched the first ep of 00. Neither held that much appeal to me... partially for my preference for UC Gundam stories. Wouldn't have watched Wing but it was on CN with some other stuff I was interested in watching so I did.
Inu Yasha- Somewhat ironic given the Holy Trilogy of Takahashi series from the 80's are still some of my favorites, Inu Yasha just never looked interesting to me. And to some extent the rabid fandom for the show when I first started attending cons again turned me off.
Hellsing- I just don't generally do Vampire shows.
Cardcaptor Sakura- No conscious effort in not watching this, just never have.
Bleach- Never held any appeal to me.
Fruits Basket- Ditto.
Air- Never got around to watching, and most people seem to be of the opinion that Clannad & Kanon are better anyway. :P
Wolf's Rain- No interest.
Fate/Stay Night- Didn't appeal to me at all, though knowing a bit about the game & what was left out of the anime made for fun teasing of a few friends who liked the anime but were unaware of some of its background.
In the second column:
Death Note- Watched the first 8 episodes or so and dropped it. Just didn't really appeal to me very much.
Fullmetal Alchemist- Again, watched about 8 episodes and dropped it, again for it not really appealing to me very much.
Naruto- Actually watched some 60 episodes or so (beginning of the Hokage fight) before dropping it (back before it was licensed). Pacing kind of annoyed me and there was a lot more that I was more interested in watching than it. A number of friends who follow it always say, "WTH you dropped it just when it was getting good! Go back and start up from there!" but I just don't have any interest in doing so.
GTO- Watched the first 6 or so at the local anime club when I still went, was amusing but not enough to buy it.
Looking through the Top 50 Popular list on ANN, I've gotta add a third category: series I wish I could go back and unwatch:
Love Hina :horse:

The problem with answering this question is I'm not really sure what gauge I want to use. Since popular can mean different things in different contexts. So I'll use the "most viewed" from ANN and divide them as such.
Saw Some, but never completed it. (Some could mean a single episode or multiple episodes)
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Hack//SIGN Akira Fullmetal Alchemist Cowboy Bebop Naruto Princess Mononoke Trigun Samurai Champloo Dragon Ball Dragon Ball Z Fruits Basket
Sailor Moon depends on how we count it. I've the edited versions of Original and R. Saw some of S edited. Have yet to get around to watching the unedited versions. So you figure it out. Part of me does want to, but I also don't know if I have the time or dedication needed to watch Sailor Moon right now. So it's I think I consider and then end up delaying eternally...
Either watched none or watched so little it doesn't matter
Bleach Death Note Rurouni Kenshin Hellsing Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal Ghost in the Shell (In General) Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion Wolf's Rain Howl's Moving Castle Blood+ Dragon Ball GT Serial Experiments Lain Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth Castle in the Sky
Vegard Aune

There are quite a few of them, (compared to most people here, I haven't really seen all that many shows in general) so I'll just mention the ones I can think of at the moment.
-Cowboy Bebop (don't really know much about it)
-Trigun (same here)
-InuYasha (eh, I keep hearing about how nothing ever happens in it...)
-Neon Genesis Evangelion (though I do plan on watching it at some point... I just haven't gotten around to it yet.)
-Gurren Lagann (ditto. This one interests me more than Evangelion does, though)
-Elfen Lied (I get the impression that it's just too damn violent)
-Love Hina (I just don't care)
-Anything to have ever come out of the Gundam-franchise (no particular reason, although the sheer amount of series is rather off-putting...)

Two million dollars and three million dollars are both better than one million dollars, but you wouldn't pass on the latter because you had the first two, right? Watch Air!

Well, I'll just use ANN's 50 most popular, since I got to have some standard here. Out of those, I haven't gotten around to...
Never really watched/very little watched
8. Elfen Lied (only saw a bit of it in anime club where there were trying to hype out how violent it was - obviously didn't get me interested)
13. Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (saw Kenshin TV on Toonami, but I never really was into Kenshin or interested in checking this out)
15. Full Metal Panic! (I have seen most of Fumoffu, though, strangely enough, because it was showing at anime club, and rather enjoyed it)
24. Hellsing TV (doesn't seem like it would interest me much)
28. Ghost in the Shell movie (never seen this, though I have some of SAC on Adult Swim)
29. FMA: Conqueror of Shamballa (only saw the series on CN - I was going to try this if CN aired it, but did they ever do that?)
30. Love Hina (from what I've heard, it doesn't seem like it would interest me much)
32. End of Evangelion (only saw Eva on CN and don't have much desire to check it out, even though I like the series decently enough)
34. FMP the Second Raid
38. Last Exile
39. Escaflowne (saw the movie which was rather boring)
42. Berserk
45. Mushi-Shi
Stopped watching
9. Bleach (gave up on it before it even got to any filler arcs)
11. Naruto (likewise, I gave up on it, and before it got to any filler arcs)
33. GitS: SAC (I think I watched a good bit of it, but my viewing became sporadic)
35. Gurren Lagann (Halfway interested in it, but never really kept up after about halfway through)
47. Code Geass R2 (similarly to Gurren Lagann, I missed some eps. near the beginning and never really bothered to keep up)
Out of the ones I have seen, there's actually quite a lot where my reaction is "Meh..." The most popular series among English-language fans don't seem to go well with me, I guess. My favorites out of them would be Haruhi, Azumanga Daioh, Chobits, Fruits Basket, GTO, and many of the Ghibli movies (excepting Howl's Moving Castle and Grave of the Fireflies which are not to my tastes)

Looking through the Top 50 Popular list on ANN, I've gotta add a third category: series I wish I could go back and unwatch:
Interesting, one series I'd end up putting in that category would be FLCL. Along with a few others. Hmm perhaps I should have added more info on my list, but I was essentially being lazy.
Granted the problem with wishing you had never seen a series is that if you never saw it and thus had no idea how bad it really was, you might end up watching it anyway in order to confirm your feelings on it. Unless the idea is to hope an internal warning system will activate figuratively saying "Watch something that's actually enjoyable instead".

Going from the MAL top 50 (Ones I haven't seen that I might've had interest in)
Hajime no Ippo
Grave of the Fireflies (Movie I know)
Gundam (Any)
Any long Shonen show haven't watched...

Also Misuzu is lonely. She wants to spend quality time with Ayu and Nagisa. The three deserve to be together.

At least the movie had the advantage of being shorter meaning the suffering didn't last as long. Yes, I found both the TV series and movie to be meh.

Misuzu: Gao... we've had it rough haven't we? Having to die at the height of our happiness and all...
Ayu: You died?
Misuzu: Yeah... didn't we all?
Ayu: Anou... I was just in a coma
Misuzu: Nagisa, what about you? You know what it's like, don't you?
Nagisa: I did... but my husband got magic light balls and went back in time to save me
Misuzu: So I'm the only one? Really?

Naruto, One Piece, Dragonball, I've seen no more than episode or two of on TV, and have no plans to see anymore. What I saw of them was enough.
Gurren Lagann, I've seen a few episodes of, but have little desire to watch it all.
Mushi-shi is one I've never seen, but don't really have any interest in ever seeing.
Also have never seen Beserk or GTO.

Going by ANN's Top 50 Most Popular:
Only saw partially/stopped watching:
2. Cowboy Bebop: I saw a couple episodes on Cartoon Network and it just didn't hold my interest.
10. FLCL: I saw part of one episode on Cartoon Network. I have an interest in the series, but I've simply never bothered to get the DVDs and at this point, I probably never will unless they get a re-release.
11. Naruto: I watched up until about episode 150 and then just waited for Shippuden. I started watching Shippuden, but around episode 30 (250) of that, I realized I really didn't care anymore. Pacing issues didn't do the series any favors (5 minutes of people staring at each other and gasping "Naruto!?"? No thanks).
14. Samurai Champloo. I saw the first episode when it first aired in Japan and then a few minutes of a recap episode on Cartoon Network a few years later. It just didn't hold my interest.
19. Chobits. I saw one episode and never felt like continuing. I later read all of the manga and still had no interest in seeing the anime.
22. Ruruoni Kenshin TV: This one is on the list for technicalities only. I saw everything through the Kyoto Arc and just never felt like spending money and time on the filler arc that lead to nothing.
31. InuYasha TV: I bought about the first 10-11 volumes (all used from GameStop, I think) and by the time I finished those, I had no interest in seeing another 150 episodes of it, especially since I had heard about the non-ending by that point.
38. Last Exile: I saw one episode (#3 or 4) from a Pioneer/Geneon preview disc and just didn't have any desire to see any more.
49. Eureka Seven: I watched up until about episode 35ish on Cartoon Network. It was okay, but the series only just barely held my interest, mainly by virtue of the genre and the pretty animation. I would have continued, but I fell way behind and had a good 8 episodes or so on my DVR, and then a storm destroyed our DVR data. So I couldn't continue and didn't really care.
Haven't seen at all:
3. Death Note: I read about half of the manga and then quit. I had planned to buy the DVDs, but I later decided against it due to my issues with Viz and not having anywhere near enough interest in the series to buy it anyway.
17. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. I was never interested in the TV series, so of course I never felt the need to watch this either.
25. Howl's Moving Castle: No interest.
33. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: I saw a few minutes from a random episode or two, but that's not enough to even count as a partial watch. I enjoyed the first GitS movie, but simply wasn't interested in the TV series.
39. Vision of Escaflowne (TV): I used to have a slight interest in this but just never got around to it. Now I don't really care anymore.
42. Berserk: I heard about the inconclusive ending and decided I would just read the manga.
48. Great Teacher Onizuka: I had a slight interest in it at one point, but I never got around to buying it and I don't care anymore.
43. Wolf's Rain: Complete lack of interest
45. Mushi-Shi: I want to see this, I just haven't gotten around to buying it yet. Maybe at the next Funi sale?
Titles seen in part: 8 TV series (but one [RK] was essentially complete anyway), 1 OVA
Titles I intend to finish: 0
Titles not seen at all: 2 movies, 7 TV series
Titles I intend to see: 1 TV series

Well, going off ANN's top 50 list [...] (as good a source as any I guess),
I'm too busy RAAAAGING at any list that leaves off Revolutionary Girl Utena. ANN (and possibly all of Western Civilization, why the hell not, eh?) FAILS!
*ahem*
Okay, I think I've got that out of my system now.
I'm actually kind of surprised by how many popular (whatever it means) shows I have seen, at least in part. I've not seen Berserk (but recently picked up the remastered edition, so it's just a matter of time), or Maison Ikkoku (maybe only popular around here?) (but I've read the manga in any case). I haven't seen Robotech, but I've watched the source material, so does that count?

TV series, using ANN's "Most Viewed" sorting:
2 Cowboy Bebop (TV) - Never really had an interest to see this.
4 Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) - Still sitting in my backlog.
6 Death Note (TV) - I liked what I saw of the beginning. It's even on Hulu...
10 Trigun (TV) - In the same category as Cowboy Bebop
11 Elfen Lied (TV) - Also in backlog
15 Samurai Champloo (TV) - Backlog...
20 Hellsing (TV) - Apart from the (I think) main girl's ZetRyo, I have no interest.
29 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) - Still really want to see this, but alas...
36 Cardcaptor Sakura (TV) - Only saw a couple of episodes. Also really want to see this.
38 Wolf's Rain (TV) - Backlog strikes again...
43 Blood+ (TV) - Saw couple episodes, didn't really hook me.
44 Dragon Ball GT (TV) - Slightly interested...
46 Serial Experiments Lain (TV) - Always wanted to watch...
50 Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) - Never interested.
And now, using "Most Popular", let's see if there's any new shows:
30 Love Hina (TV) - Watched 2 episodes and became disgusted. Manga wins.
38 Last Exile (TV) - This is the liver of the Backlog monster...
41 Haibane Renmei (TV) - and this show is the lung.
42 Berserk (TV) - No interest
44 Fate/stay night (TV) - Watched one disc, need to watch the rest.
45 Mushi-Shi (TV) - Same as F/SN
47 Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) - Waiting for DVDs...
48 Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) - Don't know anything about this show.
49 Eureka Seven (TV) - Preordered part 1 complete collection
So, 23 different shows... that's alot.
Oh, one more thing:
- Chobits (piss-poor adaptation, the manga is phenomenal, but the anime is just a complete bastardization of it)
It this a widely held opinion? Is it as bad as Love Hina manga-to-anime adaptation?

Wow have I got issues.Out of the top 50 I've seen part of (through the US release) or own (it counts even if it's in my backlog) all but 1 :sd:. That one is is FLCL. It's initial release came at a time when I was pissed with the R1 companies for quick, cheap collections of stuff I had bought singles for(and thus paid way more for:angry:). SP wasn't one of the offenders, but got lumped in. I checked out the first disk at my local library, liked it and thought about buying the series but that never came to pass. Maybe if it gets license rescued...
Wonder if that means I'm not choosy or just an anime mark. :depressed:
I do think it's kinda funny (and sad) that I have 3 copiesof #22 Akira (2 disc, 5.1 and Blu-Ray)and I don't even like the movie that much:sweat:. Watching it always makes me want to reread the 6 vol. of the manga, and who's got that much time?
EDIT:looked through the 51-100 and the only ones there I hadn't seen (or are in backlog) don't have a R1 release. I really, really need to get out more :depressed:

IMO at least Love Hina seemed to keep the essence of the characters, where as I felt Hideki got sold short in the manga adaption. Loved the manga, and am lukewarm on the anime.
Plus the LE manga box figure's is easier to display than the dvd's LE stationary set.

Lets see..... Love Hina, most Ghibli films, Samurai Champloo (saw some episodes on cartoon network but never was interested in it), Full Metal Alchemist, etc. There's probably more but I can't think of them at the moment.

Air- Never got around to watching, and most people seem to be of the opinion that Clannad & Kanon are better anyway. :P
Eh? Air's way better than Kanon and the first 1.5 seasons of Clannad, like no contest. I personally think it came out during KyoAni's peak since Full Metal Panic TSR came out after that, Munto 2 was a huge improvement over 1 and than Haurhi.

Even if you disliked the series as well it's completely different than the movie which means Brandon might like it while you didn't.

Based on ANN's top 50 most popular list.
At least gave a shot
1.Fullmetal Alchemist-Bought the first three DVDs and sold them off. Tell myself to buy it in a collection someday.
11.Naruto-Saw its and bits on Cartoon Network. I'm not your average ignorant Naruto hater, I just don't have any interest in this anime.
22.Rurouni Kenshin-Saw some episodes on Cartoon Network. Was okay, just not enough for me to watch more.
31.InuYasha-Had the first seventeen DVDs and sold those off. That's how long it took me to realize it would take up all my shelf space if I continued. And it was getting dull at that point.
33.Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex-This just put me to sleep.
50.Serial Experiments Lain-Saw some on G4 back when it was TechTV. Had no idea what was going on.
Never seen anything to very little
2.Cowboy Bebop-Not interested.
3.Death Note-Have some interest. Maybe in the far future.
5.Neon Genesis Evangelion-Never had. Never will.
6.Spirited Away-Not for me.
9.Bleach-Read the first three volumes of the manga. Never saw the anime.
13.Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal-Don't count on it.
14.Samurai Champloo-Thought about it. Still undecided.
16.Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion-Once Bandai releases a collection.
17.Cowboy Bebop:The Movie-Never saw the TV series.
19.Chobits-Not sure.
21.Fruits Basket-Ditto.
25.Howl's Moving Castle-Don't care,
26.Akira-don't care.
27.Ouran High School Host Club-No interest.
28.Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa-Nu-uh.
32.Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion-No reason given.
35.Gurren Lagann-In the future.
37.Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind-What the hell is this?
40.Castle in the Sky-Just not interested.
42.Berserk-Not in the slightest.
43.Wolf's Rain-Forget it.
45.Mushi-shi-Not for me.
46.Grave of the Fireflies-Not my taste
47.Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2-Same reason as with the first season.
48.Great Teacher Onizuka-Not my type of show.
49.Eureka Seven-I'm out of negative reasons.
At least gave a shot:6
Never seen anything to very little:26

39. Escaflowne (saw the movie which was rather boring)
Quick comment on this one.... the tv series is almost nothing like the movie (which I didn't care for either and I'm a huge fan of the tv series). If you like fantasy or steampunk at all Escaflowne is one of the best in either genre IMO and worth another look.

Air- Never got around to watching, and most people seem to be of the opinion that Clannad & Kanon are better anyway. :P
Eh? Air's way better than Kanon and the first 1.5 seasons of Clannad, like no contest. I personally think it came out during KyoAni's peak since Full Metal Panic TSR came out after that, Munto 2 was a huge improvement over 1 and than Haurhi.
haha...no way.

I'm going to agree with Fencedude here. I found myself bored during the series and I love fantasy/steampunk series.

Hmm let's see, popular shows I haven't watched but plan to:
-Escaflowne: A few years back I absolutely refused to consider buying and watching the show. I don't know why that was, but now I've decided that I'm going to buy it whenever the opportunity comes and give it a watch.
-Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid: I actually want to buy and watch this (I loved the first season), but I have yet to see FUMOFFU.
-Air TV
-Last Exile
-Wolf's Rain
-Evangelion TV
-Kanon (KyoAni Version)
Shows I want to watch but can't buy so I can watch (ie because they're OOP or probably not licensed)
-Utena
-Serial Experiments Lain
Shows I just don't care about:
-Elfen Lied
-Trigun
-Samurai Champloo
-Hellsing
-Ouran High School Host Club
-Love Hina
-Ghost in the Shell
-Berserk
-Naruto
-There's a bunch more, but these are some of the more noteworthy ones.
Popular shows I've seen that are ongoing (or finished) and seem to have no end in sight (or are too long) so I've stopped watching:
-Bleach
-Dragonball and Dragonball Z
-One Piece
-Kanon (KyoAni Version)
Oh dear, but you HAVE seen the Toei version? This needs to be rectified immediately.

Even if you disliked the series as well it's completely different than the movie which means Brandon might like it while you didn't.
I won't deny that's very well possible. After all, regardless of how similar or different X and Y maybe opinions can vary on them greatly. Either way, I can only speak for myself.
I'm one of those weird people who thought the movie was way better than the TV series.
I'm curious which one you saw first? The movie felt far too condensed to me, like it was rushing to tell the same story as the tv series without leaving anything important out and obviously there just wasn't time to do most of the content justice with such an approach. Aside from that I felt the essence of the characters changed too much, but that kind of tv to movie comparison isn't totally fair I admit. I wonder if the story would have come across as condensed to me if I had seen the movie before the tv series.
The movie did give me one of my favorite Yoko Kanno soundtracks of all time though so I don't look too harshly upon it.

Sadly, I haven't seen either version. But having seen some of Clannad has awakened the desire for me to want to see Kanon (KyoAni Version) since it's another Key property. It's one of my higher priority buys.

I'm too busy RAAAAGING at any list that leaves off Revolutionary Girl Utena. ANN (and possibly all of Western Civilization, why the hell not, eh?) FAILS!
...
I'm actually kind of surprised by how many popular (whatever it means)
ANN's "Most popular" list = add up the sum total of all the votes regardless of how many.
ANN's "Most viewed" list = tally the total number of votes regardless of score.
Those are just for a raw count for absolute numbers. For more nuanced looks, they have various lists weighted by different factors. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php Explanations there.
Utena's ratings are...
Seen in part or in whole by 1981 users, rank: #255
Median rating: Very good
Arithmetic mean: 7.9166 (Very good-.08), std. dev.: 2.09, rank: #550
Weighted mean: 7.8184 (Very good-.18), rank: #490
Bayesian estimate: 7.81523 (Very good-.18), rank: #319
Those ratings are out of... I dunno, 4000-some I guess. But thinking too hard about ANN ratings won't really get anyone anywhere. It just seemed a convenient source to grab onto for a slightly objective * list of things a lot of people had seen.
* (Well, more objective than "whatever I can pull out of my ass on a moment's notice)

I saw the TV series first.
Of course, I don't really try to directly compare the two at all, since its a largely futile exercise, since they really are quite different.
I found Hitomi's character in the movie to be vastly more interesting than her TV series version though.

I'm with Fence in thinking they're just so completely and utterly different in every meaningful way that comparing them is hugely difficult. That said, I liked both, although I much prefer the TV series. Of course, given my usual reaction to movies and OVAs, that's not really surprising. The movie was a good one-time watch through though.
Plus, I got the super fancy LE edition for $9, who can complain about that?
(Oh and I saw the TV series first, myself.)

Doing as several others have done, I've looked at ANN's 50 most popular anime series (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php?top50=popular) list...
Death Note - It doesn't interest me. It's on my rental list but as a low priority. (heck, I'll give most things a chance)
Trigun - I've never felt the urge to give it a shot, who knows maybe some day I'll rent it.
Rurouni Kenshin: Same as Trigun. (also the Samurai X OVA)
Cowboy Bebop The Movie: I wasn't keen on the series so I gave the movie a wide berth.
Hellsing: I'm not a fan of this type of show, again some day I might give it a chance, but not any time soon.
Gurren Lagann: Didn't jump out at me, the US release annoyance was also against it, but might give it a rent when the UK release happens later this year.
Berserk: Same as Hellsing, only with less possibility of me watching it.
Fate/Stay Night: I'd actually be willing to give this one a shot, but only if it got a UK release.
Mushishi: A few minor niggles (and one major annoyance) kept me from trying this one - but it's on my rental list.
Geass R2: It was licenced and not released yet - and wasn't on TV over here. It's not my fault I've not seen it yet.
Great Teacher Onizuka: I've never been tempted to try it, and the lack of UK release is against it.

From ANN's list of "top 50 most popular", I haven't seen:
Elfen Lied - friend is going to lend me the boxset soon, and will probably buy later
Trigun - eventual purchase
Samurai X - eventual purchase
FMP Fumoffu - eventual purchase
Chobits - eventual purchase (my friend is a major CLAMP fan, so he's been bugging me about this one)
Rurouni Kenshin - stick with manga
Hellsing (TV) - watch Ultimate instead
Akira - eventual purchase
Ouran High School Host Club - eventual purchase
Ghost in the Shell (movie) - eventual purchase
FMP: The Second Raid - eventual purchase
Air (TV) - not interested
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - eventual purchase
Last Exile - buying the boxset when it comes out in May
Vison of Escaflowne (TV) - eventual purchase
Castle in the Sky - eventual purchase
Haibane Renmei - eventual purchase
Berserk - own, just haven't watched yet
Wolf's Rain - own the first half, just need to buy the second half and then I'll watch
Fate/stay Night - own, just haven't watched yet
Mushi-Shi - eventual purchase
Grave of the Fireflies - eventual purchase/borrow (not sure if I want to buy it, since it's a "watch once" type of movie)
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 - halfway through R1 on Bandai's Youtube channel, eventual purchase for both seasons
Great Teacher Onizuka - not interested
Serial Experiments Lain - eventual purchase
So I've seen 25 out of 50, not bad for someone who started their fandom around 2007.

Okay, going with MyAnimeList's top 50 or so. Reading this list I've realised that I'm really...kind of judgemental.
Shows I've seen a few of
Chobits - watched first three episodes, never carried on.
Samurai Champloo - I couldn't STAND Fuu, so gave up pretty swiftly. Such a useless, annoying protagonist.
Fate/Stay Night - got bored with all the exposition a couple of episodes in.
Claymore - watched the first episode, realised the male sidekick would be useless and annoying (which irritates me as much as useless and annoying female characters) and disliked the cheapo animation, dropped.
Shakugan no Shana - sloppy artwork, Shana annoyed me, dropped and never looked back.
Soul Eater - too childish for me.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - I really liked the first arc, and then... just didn't watch any more.
FLCL - Gainax's special brand of perverted crazy did nothing for me, dropped after two episodes.
D Gray Man - shounen fight show which I hoped would be different, but wasn't.
Rurouni Kenshin - saw a couple, but failed to convince me to like period shows.
Azumanga Daioh - I tried to like this, but I don't find 4-koma comedy funny so gave up.
Inu Yasha - saw a couple of episodes, thought it was fine, and never bothered watching again.
Eureka Seven - THOSE SODDING KIDS.
Shows I've seen one or none of
Death Note - I've watched the opening sequences and the crisps sequence, and that's it. I have a few volumes of the manga somewhere but I don't think I ever read them...
Elfen Lied - not seen anything beyond the first five minutes of the first episode...
Evangelion - ...I haven't watched Eva. At all. Okay, I've seen the OP and I think part of the first episode, but nothing else. I swore I'd never watch it because everyone thought it was the best show ever when I got into fandom, and so I never have and probably never will. Stupid reason, but hey.
Gurren Lagann - saw first episode, knew I'd hate it.
Lucky Star - now this I've genuinely not seen any of beyond promo artwork, which embodied everything I try to avoid in anime.
Clannad - I've stopped watching visual novel adaptations post-Air (which I liked), which is why I've never watched this.
Love Hina - I got into anime when this show was still popular, so its reputation preceded it, hence why I've never watched it.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu/Second Raid - I was pretty much forced to watch the original FMP and it put me off the franchise for life.
Zero no Tsukaima - I read the premise and avoided it. Simple.
Black Lagoon - same as ZnT, for different reasons.
School Rumble - same as ZnT, for different reasons.

Let's see here, I did the "Most Viewed" list. Let's look at the "Most Popular" list and see if I can find titles that were not included in the former that I either didn't watched or never finished. Or heck I'll just comment on some of these 50 titles and not worry about repeats. I'll either list it as some which could mean just one episode or more. Or none which means either I didn't watch any or if I did then I don't remember.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) (Some)
I tried a bit of the series, but the further I progressed in it the more bleh and meh it became. I decided to stop watching it.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) (some)
I tried maybe one or two episodes, but was ultimately convinced to watch something else.
Death Note (TV) (None)
The very premise of this series completely disgusts me.
Princess Mononoke (movie) (None)
Nothing personal, but I have no interest in trying it.
Bleach (TV) (None)
I've more or less given up on endless series. At the very least I like the idea of maybe having seasons with breaks between them. Still I doubt Bleach is right for me anyway.
Naruto (TV) (Some)
After awhile it became clear the show was going to go in a very meh direction. Plus the main character I had any interest in aka Sakura was destined to be treated poorly. Maybe that's changed, but... Either way I didn't care for anymore center of the universe Naruto.
Trigun (TV) (Some)
I got bored with Vash and the series in general.
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) (None)
No real interest in trying it.
Samurai Champloo (TV) (Some)
A very annoying first episode was enough to tell me this was wrong for me.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (None)
Given that I had trouble getting into the TV series....
Fruits Basket (TV) (Some)
I had trouble getting into this, but maybe it was the timing as to when I tried to watch it. However I haven't felt like giving it another chance.
Rurouni Kenshin (TV) (None)
I doubt have any real motivation to try it.
Hellsing (TV) (None)
Given my tastes, I doubt it's for me. Plus I watched the trailer for Ultimate and it was a complete turn off. So I'm not watching that either.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) (None)
I haven't felt like trying it.
Akira (movie) (some)
I can't remember how much of this I watched, but at a certain point I realized I didn't like torturing myself.
Ghost in the Shell (In General) (None)
I have no real interest in trying the Ghost in the Shell Franchise.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa (None)
Why would I watch the movie of a TV series I didn't care enough to finish?
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (none)
The TV series is at best average and I don't want to waste anymore time on Evangelion.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) (None)
Nothing against per se. Just having felt like watching it yet.
Gurren Lagann (TV) (Some)
I tried a bit of it, but haven't had the motivation to watching anymore.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) (None)
I'm just not interested in trying it.
Last Exile (TV) (Some)
I tried a couple of episodes, but I got bored of it quickly.
Castle in the Sky (movie) (None)
No interest in trying it.
Haibane Renmei (TV) (Some)
One of those series that I watched a bit of, lost track of, and never finished.
Berserk (TV) (None)
It's definitely not for me.
Wolf's Rain (TV) (None)
I don't really feel like watching it.
Mushi-Shi (TV) (Some)
I tried some of it, but haven't had the motivation to finish it.
Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) (None)
I don't feel like trying it.
Eureka Seven (TV) (None)
Nothing against it, but I don't know much about it. Actually I vaguely remember trying one episode, but my memory of it is so fuzzy that it may as well not matter.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) (None)
It doesn't feel like a series I'd like.

Princess Mononoke (one day)
D.Gray-man (meh)
Howl's Moving Castle (one day)
Azumanga Daioh (I just watched ep one like two weeks ago)
School Rumble (did nothing for me)
Dragonball (original) (meh)

Using that ANN most popular list and culling out movies and sequels/etc.:
1 Fullmetal Alchemist
8 Elfen Lied
9 Bleach
11 Naruto
14 Samurai Champloo
15 Full Metal Panic!
16 Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
19 Chobits
27 Ouran High School Host Club
30 Love Hina
36 Air
43 Wolf's Rain
44 Fate/stay night
48 Great Teacher Onizuka
49 Eureka Seven
The "most viewed" list I think, from a quick look, would add .hack and Chrono Crusade.
Seen some but haven't had interest to get back to and/or finish:
21 Fruits Basket
22 Rurouni Kenshin
42 Berserk
24 Hellsing
31 Inuyasha
Intend to check out at some point:
35 Gurren Lagann
But it's obvious, at least by ANN's metric(s), how generational this is. All of those above I haven't seen are from this decade. The only trans-generational franchise I really have not seen anything of (or very, very little) is Gundam (which only shows, per ANN, on the most viewed list, anyway).

I don't try to follow trends either, but often I end up going for anime that either becomes a trend or already has a fanbase. I often say I'll try anything, but the fact is I know what people share similar tastes to me (Ayana Mudou, Shiki Faxanadu, The Great Bear, Spirit of the Stage, EmperorBrandon, and several others too...) so if they like something I'm more likely to try it as well. It works both ways, with me often recomending stuff to them in turn.
Popular things are popular for a reason, but just because something is popular doesn't mean everybody will enjoy it. It's better to try what you want to try, and don't try what you don't want to try.

Granted the fun part here is when stuff like this results in me getting posts along the lines of "You're destined to like <insert character(s) here>" or something along those lines. It's kind of scary that people either know me too well or at least think they do. I wonder if I should quiz people one of these days. Also I'm not sure what to say to the Faxanadu thing.

Culling out most of the sequels and whatnot (based on ANN's Most Poplular list):
Fullmetal Alchemist-I don't know why I haven't seen this
Death Note-Happy with the manga
Elfen Lied-I'm too squeamish
Bleach-Too long
Naruto-Too long
Samurai Champloo-Just not interested
Chobits-Too expensive, at least when I was thinking about it
Fruits Basket-Catch-22 involving manga/anime dichotomy
Hellsing-Vampires...no.
Berserk-Not my cup of tea
GTO-Just never cared for it
On a weirder note, Cowboy Bebop should probably be on this list because I've only seen episodes 1-25. I've just never seen a reason to see the last one. I don't know why, really.
I haven't seen many of the rest, but they're either on the "buy later" list or waiting for me after the TRSI Bandai sale.

I guess the moral of the story is that I don't follow trends, just my own interests.
Who knew threads like this could even have morals?
ALL:"Wheel of Morality turn, turn, turn, show us the lesson that we should learn"
Wheel spins
Yakko tears off sheet and reads: "Possums have pouches like kangaroos" *shrug*
Dot:"How profound"
Wakko:"Pat, I'd like to but a vowel"
Yakko:"Wrong wheel"
Wakko:"Oh, sorry"

I guess the moral of the story is that I don't follow trends, just my own interests.
Your "interests" are missing out on a lot of amazing shows, though!
..or maybe I just haven't gotten to them yet! :sdsmiley: I watch things at a much slower pace than many others here (a 26 episode series usually takes me a month to get through because of my viewing habits), so it takes me longer to get to new things usually.
Like Yamaxanadu, I also don't let popularity persuade me one way or the other when it comes to checking new shows out. If something looks good, I'll usually investigate and then decide if I want to add it to my collection. There are several folks around here whose tastes seem to align with mine, so when they mention something that they like and I haven't seen it, I'll usually investigate to see if it looks good to me!
I'm not exclusionary when it comes to what I like, I just don't have the resources to watch everything. It's not that I avoid titles; I just can't always get to everything right away. Just as one example, I didn't see Escaflowne until 2006, a decade after its release! :sd:
I knew I should have used an emoticon when I made that initial comment, or worded it a little differently... or something. :sd:

In the past 6 months, I have really been able to catch up on a lot of titles on my waiting lists. At this time I am actually having problems finding titles I haven't rented or don't own yet.
Shows I just have not watched:
Robotech - Saw Macross, okay but underwhelming. Enough for me.
Gundam (any series) - I did try to watch the one that Sci-Fi ran but lost interest fast.
Ranma 1/2 - After the first 3rd of UY & the first half of IY, I tossed any ideas about this one. I did go back and put Maison Ikkoku & Mermaid Forest on my shelf though.
Chobits - No interest
Fruits Basket - No interest
Cardcaptor Sakura - No interest
Seen in part and discontinued:
Mahromatic - Due to an error in my rental list, I was sent Something More Beautiful first. I got through one disk and reset the queue.
Dragonball - I have seen the first 25-30 eps of Dragonball and Dragonball Z thanks to Toonami. Too long.
Case Closed - Saw 5-6 random episodes, this show just hit a bad nerve with me. I don't know why
Twelve Kingdoms - Tried renting this twice, got through Disk 5 on the second try. Liked what I saw enough to consider a future cheap boxset. I felt this was a show I had to be in the mood for to sit down and watch because I would have to really focus on it and not marathon it. Too difficult for me to do that with a rental.
Utawarerumono - Not incredibly popular but notable in that both places I rent from are missing Disk 3, had to stop at that point.
Shows that will find their way into the rental queues eventually:
Master Keaton - Acutally got the first disk yesterday
Heat Guy J - Got the first two disks yesterday
Clannad
Kanon
Bezerk - doubtful on this one but as I said, I am starting to have to really scrounge for titles to put into the queues

Sometimes I feel like I am the only anime fan who has never watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
I have also never seen Bleach (read some of the manga, however), Air, Kanon, Fate/Stay Night, and others that are popular. Can't think of anymore, though.

Going by ANN's Most Popular list, I have either seen none or just part of the following:
Fullmetal Alchemist (I've seen episodes here and there on AS. Planning to buy the dvds the next re-release Funimation does of them)
Death Note (I've only seen the first episode. Planning to buy the dvds in the future)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (No interest)
Princess Mononoke (Waiting for a Blu-ray release)
Bleach (I've only seen a couple episodes on AS. I may pick up the first box set later on in the future and see how I like it)
Naruto (Seen a couple episodes and didn't care for it)
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (I need to see tv series first)
Full Metal Panic! (Not much interest. I may check it out if ADV ever streams it online)
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (I have the dvd but haven't watched it yet for whatever reason. I'll watch it soon)
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (No interest)
Chobits (No interest)
Azumanga Daioh (No interest)
Rurouni Kenshin (I'm waiting to see if Media Blasters will do a remastered release ala Berserk for it)
Ouran High School Host Club (No interest)
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa (I need to watch the tv series first)
Love Hina (No interest)
Inuyasha (Seen a few episodes and didn't care for it)
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (I need to see the first series)
Air (No interest)
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Waiting for a Blu-ray release)
Castle in the Sky (Waiting for a Blu-ray release)
Berserk (I need to buy that remastered set sometime soon)
Fate/stay night (I watched the first volume and was bored by it)
Eureka Seven (I've only seen the first episode on AS. I'm planning on buying the Anime Legends collections)

Checking both ANNs Most Popular and Most Viewed lists...
Seen moderate amounts of
Naruto - I've seen maybe a hundread episodes or so, and the first movie. Got bored once it hit the filler and animation quality started dropping drastically.
Dragon Ball - I've seen random bits-and-pieces here and there. Nothing against it other than it's length not being something I'd want to tackle. Curious about the forthcoming re-edits.
Chobits - I've seen about half the anime version, I think, despite owning it on DVD (some of it twice, since I have the early volumes on R2). I kind of think they just completely missed the point during the adaptation process, and it comes off as being replusive as a result.
Seen small amounts of
Bleach - I saw maybe six or seven episodes back when it first started. I've read the manga up until the end of the Soul Society arc, and found that it pretty much lost my interest half-way through it largely thanks to it's habit of introducing dozens of largely pointless characters. I've stopped following the manga, so I figure it's not even worth starting on the anime now.
Sailor Moon - I've seen random episodes here and there, mostly back on obscure satellite TV stations in the mid-90s. As a result, I've seen a few random episodes raw (mostly from 'R' I think), quite a few in German, and maybe one episode of the English dub, but none subtitled. The length inclines me not to bother.
Not Seen
Death Note - I've read the manga, and I've actually seen the live action movies (well, bar the "L" one), and don't really have any interest in seeing another version of the same story.
Inuyasha - I just have no interest in it what-so-ever. I've had a hard time getting into anything Takahashi outside of Urusei Yatsura.
Mushi-shi - I do actually keep meaning to want to see this, but I've had two volumes of the manga sitting around unread for months now that I should really get around to reading first.
Grave of the Fireflies - I've had this on DVD for what must be coming on eight or nine years now. For some strange reason I've just never really felt like watching something that is as reputedly depressing as this.
Everything else I appear to have seen all of.

Heh... what? I could see not wanting to see any of them, or wanting to see all of them, or of course seeing them but only liking one or two of them, but why Air and Clannad without Kanon if you haven't seen any of them yet? :sd:

Figured I'd jump on the bandwagon too, now that I have the time and there's a list to go by. If I tried from the top of my head... well I couldn't do it.
Have Not Seen
Death Note - want to see it just haven't gotten around to it
Elfen Lied - was on my list to see.. but as the days go by I'm less inclined.
Full Metal Panic! - think I may have seen an episode.. or maybe it was just a trailer... either way didn't interest me.
Code Geass - want to see, haven't gotten to it.
Gurren Lagann - same as above.
Berserk - no interest, not my kind of show.
Eureka Seven - no interest
Blood+ - want to see.. but release is too... uncertain, waiting on Sony.
Chrono Crusade - no interest.Saw Part of Didn't Continue
Bleach - watched an ep or two on AS, was interested but too long.
Naruto - again saw a few eps from AS, but was meh.
Samurai Champloo - again ep or two on AS but didn't grab me enough.
Rurouni Kenshin - saw some eps on Toonami back in the day, but didn't interest me.
Hellsing - watch an ep or two with a friend who loves it... I didn't really care for it.
Ghost in the Shell - watched the first movie and a few eps of one of the tv series... but wasn't in to it.
Inuyasha - watched a few eps on AS while waiting for other shows.. was okay but nothing in it to keep me watching, again another too long series.
Wolf's Rain - saw two or so eps on AS and wanted to buy, haven't yet...
.Hack/SIGN - few eps from Toonami, but no interest.
DBZ and DB - a few from Toonami, hated it... not my type of show.
Gundam - watch a little of Wing and another series.. but again not my type of show.
I used to try to watch series that had a lot of good buzz, but have found my taste falling in to a different path so I'm starting to veer away from a lot of series no matter what the buzz around them. Though there are a few that do grab my interest still, that may not be in my regular interest. I like to try a lot of different things, but I have narrowed my interest since the beginning of my fandom.
I am kind of proud that I've seen a lot of the series listed.. for some reason. I guess because I feel like I haven't missed much.

Just going off ANN's top 50, There's a lot I haven't seen. And a cursory glance past that shows there's bucketloads more I've not watched yet.
Fullmetal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Bleach
Naruto
Trigun
Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Fruits Basket
Rurouni Kenshin
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Ouran High School Host Club
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa
Love Hina
Inuyasha
Air
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
Last Exile
(The) Vision of Escaflowne
Haibane Renmei
Berserk
Wolf's Rain
Fate/stay night
Mushi-Shi
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2
Grave of the Fireflies
Serial Experiments Lain
For the most part, I've absolutely no interest in that lot of shows. Stuff like Dragonball and it's many sequels hold no allure for me either. I saw an episode of Dragonball Z once - it was just two characters facing each other for what seemed like the entire episode, punctuated by the occasional shot of astonished onlookers. Memory's a little fuzzy, but they might've gasped in alarm a couple of times.
As for those much-talked about Key shows, I've not seen those either, but I may get 'round to them someday.
Looking at that list, I can see most of my favourites didn't even make the top 100, let alone 50. I'd almost be disheartened by that, but then I'd realise it doesn't matter if my favourites are popular or not and go back to watching the shows.

Dragonball Z and its spin offs - I hear a lot of people compare it to shonens like Yu Yu Hakusho but I just never got the appeal.
Wolfs Rain - while I did watch it all back when it was on Adult Swim about halfway my brain was so fried I just lost any real intrest.
Pokemon - Never been into the video games or the card batle game itself thus I have no disire to see the anime.
All the Gundam series prior to Gundum 00 - I can't get into the compecated storylines.
Voltron - one of thoes shows were the toys from it were better that the show.
Plan to finish at some point Hellsing Ultamite. I only have seen volume 1 and Im up to volume 9 of the manga.

A fair number of them, according to the most-viewed list.
3 Bleach (TV) - used to really like this show, but dropped it after 90 episodes.
5 Naruto (TV) - got through 168 episodes, decided Shipuuden wasn't worth watching the rest of the filler.
12 Inuyasha (TV) - saw a few random eps on TV, but I don't ever plan on watching the whole thing due to the inconclusive ending.
17 Rurouni Kenshin (TV) - plan on getting to this someday.
23 Dragon Ball Z (TV) - seen a few eps, but I'm not going out of my way to watch this.
24 Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) - same with RK.
29 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) - not sure why I haven't seen this yet, I certainly have no compelling reason not to.
30 Dragon Ball (TV) - same with DBZ.
39 Howl's Moving Castle (movie) - have this on DVD, so I'll get to it one of these days.
43 Blood+ (TV) uh... no.
44 Dragon Ball GT (TV) uh... no.
50 Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) - want to see this someday too. I have seen Wing, 08th Team, 0080, half of G, and some of the movie trilogy, though.
From the "Most Popular" list, I can add:
37 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) - same with Howl's, I'll get around to this one of these days.
47 Grave of the Fireflies (movie) - can't believe I still haven't seen this.
48 Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) - saw a few eps, they were okay, but decided to drop due to the "go read the manga lol" ending.
49 Eureka Seven (TV) - definitely interested in seeing at some point.

Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal -Don't even know what this is about lol
Ghost in the Shell (In General) -Watched one episode and really didn't like it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion - Watched the first disc it was good but not great at least to me.

Going off the top 50 most popular list on ANN:
Haven't seen any of:
Evangelion - not a fan of the giant robot thing
Spirited Away - Not sure how I've missed this one
Samurai X - I've seen some of Kenshin, but have no real interest in watching any more of it
Akira - Not really sure how I've never seen this, since I know basically the entirety of the story (very similar to Evangelion that way)
Escaflowne
Berserk
Wolf's Rain
Grave of the Fireflies - Maybe I just don't watch that many anime movies
GTO - I think I've probably never seen this because Tokyopop is the licensor, and after seeing their Initial D releases, I never plan on watching anything else they've done.
Haven't seen all of, never planning on watching any more:
Naruto - I've caught the first few episodes, didn't flip any particular switch inside me
Code Geass - Caught the first episode, nothing made me want to watch the next one
Kenshin - I actually enjoyed the few episodes I watched, but it didn't leave me with any desire to watch more.
Inuyasha - I think I've seen about twenty episodes, scattered all around. Not really a fan of the concept
Seen some of, plan on buying:
Gurren Lagann - the show that broke me off of fansubs, since I watched it up until it was declared licensed and now feel obligated to buy the DVDs, even though I didn't like the show.
Eureka Seven - I caught the first few episodes on adult swim. I'm not a huge fan, but I have a lot of respect for BONES and have thought about buying the inevitable value priced collection.

3. Death Note - in Netflix queue for eventual watching
9. Bleach - not much interest
11. Naruto - no interest
16. Code Geass - in Netflix queue or waiting to buy collections
20. Azumanga Daioh - dropped after first dvd when it was coming out, but I have since purchased a cheap collection that is backlogged.
23. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - I have never really felt motivated to see this. Maybe I'll check it out some day.
27. Ouran High School Host Club - backlogged and will see within the next few months I imagine.
36. Air TV - plan to purchase complete collection next month.
43. Wolf's Rain - backlogged
45. Mushi-shi - in Netflix queue
46. Code Geass R2 - will wait for collection of this as well

Shows I've never seen out of the top twenty five of ANN's "50 Most Viewed":
3 Bleach (TV) 8.04 11815
5 Naruto (TV) 7.49 10835
6 Death Note (TV) 8.87 10029
8 Princess Mononoke (movie) 8.83 8930
9 (The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) 8.73 8865
11 Elfen Lied (TV) 8.37 8591
12 Inuyasha (TV) 7.05 8436
13 Chobits (TV) 7.57 8419
18 Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) 8.01 7372

23 Dragon Ball Z (TV) 6.61 6935
24 Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) 9.03 6800
Most, especially the Jump series, I have no desire to start. One, Samurai X, is already in my backlog. The rest, Haruhi, Elfen Lied, Chobits, and Akira, I'll probably get around to buying eventually. As a side note, I haven't seen any of the series in the "10 Most Overrated" list, either.

From ANN's top 50 most popular and most viewed, I've seen none of:
Naruto
Howl's Moving Castle
Love Hina
Inuyasha
Grave of the Fireflies
Dragonball
There's more on the list I've not seen but have the discs for and will watch when I get time. The ones listed I have no desire to watch, except perhaps Howl's Moving Castle.
Rurouni Kenshin I stopped after the Kyoto arc, since what I've heard of it suggests that it is largely filler that isn't even true to the characters' established natures.

Bleach - no real interest.
Naruto - saw first few eps & absoultely hated it.
Fruits Basket - no real interest
Final Fantasy VII - not into the games.
Inyuasha - no real interest & too long.
GTO - no real interest.
Dragon Ball - saw some eps on TV found it tooooooo dragggedd ooouuuutttt (power up for an ep, fight, opponent does same next ep, fight, repeat .......)

Pokemon - Never been into the video games or the card batle game itself thus I have no disire to see the anime.
I never played any of the game, but I did try the anime. I quickly lost interest in it. In part because I didn't care much for Ash and the series just felt off to me. Granted that was long ago...
