What is the true nature of RahXephon?

If there was something I never quite understood in the series, it was this: what exactly was RahXephon, the giant mecha? We know it's some kind of sentient being, and that it had much to do with the Mu as well as Ixtli and Yolteotl. But in essence, what was it really, and what exactly was its true connection with Ixtli and the Mu?

It's been four years since I've seen RahXephon. But after seeing your question, theworld, I think it may be time for me to move up that timetable for a second viewing; especially, if it takes me so long to recall who Ixtli and Yolteotl were. :)
