View Full Version : Second season of Haruhi starting soon?

A so-called 'renewed' airing of Haruhi has just started, and according to this (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-04-03/gigazine-and-j-cast/2009-haruhi-will-be-28-episodes-long) article on ANN, the broadcasting station has claimed that the 'renewed' airing is scheduled to be 28 episodes long.

Now this could be a mistake, or the first season being aired twice, or something else, but it's interesting. What does everyone think the chances of this being related to an airing of an actual second season are?

I'll just believe it when I see it at this point. With the novels apparently on hiatus and a couple years of teasing gone now, I'm not trying to predict anything Haruhi related anymore. Besides, I have Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san to tide me over, at least. <3

I'm guessing its the series being aired in chronological order and then again in broadcast order. Airing the second series without any fanfare would be an odd move.

*thinks about it for a minute*

You know, the original series had 14 episodes. They could easily just run the show twice, once in Kyon order and once in Haruhi order.

Just a thought.

EDIT: While I was distracted by a phone call, Sly05 slipped in and posted the same exact thought.

I think they show it twice and then air the second season in the fall. That would make the most sense.

Agreed. There is no way Kyoto Animation would have put a new season of material into production without people noticing and expounding on the details. There is too little excitement over the news for it to be new material.

So they are doing a surprise airing of the second series? This is a really weird way of doing things if it turns out to be true. Nonetheless, can't really complain about more Haruhi.

Yeah, I'd normally be much more ecstatic about it, but with the number of "big announcements" and misleading statements that have already been floated around, it's hard to get my hopes up until the thing actually airs. Not to mention that airing it within a rerun of the first series is the most convoluted way of showing it imaginable.

Well, if there are stories in between this and that episode, it sort of makes sense.

Anyway, yeah...

Got my hands on a shotgun already; where are they going to go with this?

I'm assuming it's only the one episode for now, and not an actual second season. Hm, rather than rewatch the whole series, I'll probably just watch this episode by itself, and save a rewatch for if/when they do a real full second season so we can see where the episodes fit and what the best way to watch a combined first/second season run will be. I'm betting it definitely won't be as simple as just tacking all the new eps on to the end of a viewing of season one in either order. Now that you have a new episode (and hopefully "episodes" eventually), the best way is likely to require mixing "season 2" episodes in at various points.

So I don't want to do that until I know just how much they have planned, and how it all comes together. In the short term, I'll just watch this ep and any other new eps as they come out.

Oh, this is fascinating.

Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is arguably the single most important story in the series, it sets the basis for EVERYTHING which has happened since.

This basically confirms a second season at some point.

Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody covers the "events of Tanabata" that were referenced briefly in season 1. It should take place sometime between Boredom of Suzumiya Haruhi and Mysterique Sign

Hmm, I should still wait before doing any full rewatch though. If they only do one new ep this run through and then add more in a second season, the other eps could come anywhere. Though they might all be confined to one chronological period, as if all the Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu I-VI episodes had been a season to themselves. At any rate, it'll be interesting to see where it all falls. Here's hoping their plan isn't something insane like airing the show again every season with a single new ep added each time =P

All subsequent stories should fall after the final episode of season 1, unless they animate volume 2, which I really don't think they're going to.

Yeah, if they are animating Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody it doesn't make much sense to go into the volume 2 material. The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina 00 pretty much covers all the good stuff from that volume anyway.

New news on this subject: this (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-05-17/2009-haruhi-tv-run-8th-episode-listed-as-new-episode) article from ANN claims that the TV broadcast schedule for one of the stations airing the 'renewed' Haruhi says that the episode airing on May 24 will be titled 'Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody', which, if correct, would be a new episode based on material not currently animated. This might be true, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Nonetheless, it's potentially interesting news.

Edit: What happened with the posts? I make a new post and revive the thread, then when I come back later there are a lot of earlier posts before mine. Weird.

Here's an update from ANN:

"TV Wakayama's schedule no longer lists (http://www.tv-wakayama.co.jp/bangumihyou/table/bangumi/24.html) the episode title. TV Wakayama told (http://gigazine.net/index.php?/news/comments/20090518_haruhi_2nd_sasanoha/) the Gigazine website that it was instructed not to post the episode title — but since the title was "somehow" posted anyways, the station has deleted that information."

I'm not even sure how to respond this because I have no idea how to take this. I mean just what is this supposed to be a case of?

A: Someone making a major mistake and the episode was never meant to air.

B: Someone playing a practical joke on us.

C: Information getting leaked early and them wanting to act like it's supposed to still be a secret. Which either results in things still ending up the same way or a sudden change of plans.

Regardless, this whole situation with Haruhi is getting..... well, it's getting beyond silly. I just don't know what to think anymore.

This thread is also a month and a half old =P

The new bit of news was about precisely which episode it was, i.e. Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody. Though that info has already been pulled from the site.

Also, discussion is more "careful" because Kadokawa have trolled us so many times by now that getting worked up over any bit of Haruhi news short of the actual eps honest to goodness airing before our eyes would just make us look gullible. :sd:

Nothing more than the one episode is confirmed as truly new yet, and even that much has been pulled (for now). And like I said, we've been through this song and dance so many times already, and have posted so many times about it in a million threads. Kadokawa has thoroughly desensitized us, which I am not sure is a good marketing tactic, but then they're the ones who are successful businesspeople, not me. That and they know that no matter how long they hold off, it'll still be wildly popular if/when it ever actually finally comes out.

Even if the way they're going about it is unusual, I do think there's new material coming. Announcing the new main series staff for this airing wouldn't make much sense if it didn't have new material. I guess we'll see on Thursday if it is "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" (and then if it is, start a new thread for it?). I haven't read any spoilers on the novels, so I'm looking forward to it.

Personally I think stealth launching straight into a second season at the end of the re-airing of season 1 is a brilliant idea if they do it right, but I agree the sheer amount of misinformation and speculation has bred this "meh we'll see when it actually happens" attitude.

I was just bemused at the general silence because some people never seem to get tired of talking about haruhi rumors.

Yeah, I guess. It'll be a bit odd though. Assuming what Fence said pans out then the order should run: S1 H 1-7, then Bamboo, then S1 H 8-14 (or 13?), then 13 new episodes for the "second season"? So there might be a big gap between the first new episode and the rest of them.

But who knows? It's impossible to say what's going to happen with Haruhi anymore. :sd:

I think it'll work a lot better in Japan (where people will be following this renewed airing more on TV and such) than overseas, where we're just kinda getting mixed snippets of translated news here and there without much big picture. We have to come at it from a rather different angle. It might have been smart to get something like this renewed airing on Crunchyroll so foreign fans could "follow along" more easily and get the new eps in real-time, and more importantly in context. As it is all you're really going to see is "Hay guys suddenly new Haruhi ep showing up on torrent trackers!" and lots of "Where the hell did this come from and where does it fit?" and if my guess on their approach is right, "And where the heck is the rest of the new eps?" for a few months until the rest hits in the second half of the 28 ep airing.

Not that this is any of Kadokawa's concern necessarily, since if they wanted to sell it to us the same way as they're selling it to Japan, they'd have done so.

Also if Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is shown for episode 8 than week 12 will be the key ep to see if we're getting a real second season.

Oh wow, they really are all mixed around in there big time. Maybe I'll start rewatching the show roughly on schedule with this reairing after all. Though if I do that now or after the important ep 12 is revealed to be new or not, I'm not sure. Probably the latter after all, since I have so much else I'm watching right now.

maybe I'm missing something here, but would someone please explain to me exactly how airing the second season to one of the most successful animes in recent history, interspersed with reruns from the first season, on a remote-ish TV channel not too many people even get, with no announcement or advertising except vague, trollish hints and "leaks", will actually benefit Kadokawa?

This is the type of viral marketing that's useful for lesser known, independent shows where it gets people intrigued... But haruhi is a completely known property. This seems counter productive, or at the best a clever way to rationalize a 0 PR budget.

I think whoever decided to market it this way (again, assuming it pans out) definitely isn't a PR person and should never be allowed to make these kind of decisions again. The negative press they got from the Nice Boat joke with Haruhi-chan should have been a clear sign that they dropped the ball with their current strategy.

Interesting... I hadn't known that they had gotten that much negative press from the Nice Boat joke. I thought it was hilarious and given the release was 'at the whim of the Ultra-Director' anyway was a humorous way to handle its being delayed by a day or so. But then, that was for a web-release short parody series vs. the full-blown sequel, so it made a modest bit of sense.

I'll be surprised if a new ep. airs this week. Pleasantly, admittedly- but it just doesn't seem like it would make much sense for the full-blown sequel to be handled this way. I'll be out of town and unable to watch much of anything anyway, so I'll just find out what happened from everyone else when I get back (though given I'll be at an anime con, if a new ep does air I imagine it'll be the talk of the con...) and watch it if is actually something new.

I doubt negative press is of any concern to them. Clearly, Kadokawa has decided that Haruhi is a winner no matter what (I mean, those bitching about "poor treatment" will watch the show regardless), so they can play with the fans a bit.

At this point, they're doing whatever they can to stay in news headlines and online discussions (via a touch of notoriority), which is all they need to do.

This isn't really 100% accurate. Disappearance will need to be at least 6 episodes (despite the book only being five chapters, its just as long as Melancholy, and significantly more involved) and Snow Mountain Syndrome is definitely two parter material, I don't see how it could possibly be covered in a single episode.

New episode of haruhi confirmed. Todays episode is bamboo leaf rhapsody.

hmm... even if it was a bit of a trixy thing to do, you have to respect them for having the balls to air the second series of Haruhi with only a few "leaked" rumours... :P

Well, ANN is saying that the new episode is airing (http://admin.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-05-21/new-haruhi-suzumiya-anime-episode-airs).

I have waited three long years for this. I'm just so excited! :sdsmiley:

Is there a site out there that is streaming the new episodes subbed legally?

Really, even though this thread isn't very long comparitively, we could do with a new thread for discussing the second season now that we know that it's confirmed. I'll create one in a moment or two

No, most likely not (which is strange given that less popular things are going through this process)...

Actually, yeah, they should stream this legally with subs; that'd be great.

Since Fudce has started a new thread (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=93194) for the second season, this thread has served its purpose; locking.
