Anything from the director of Giant Robo always gets me excited, though he's disappointed more often than not.

All right decided to try this out for the heck of it. So far it seems to be a mixture of cool, confusing, and chaotic. Although it might make more sense on a re-watch and/or to people more familiar with Mazinger in general.

Either way it feels like we've been thrown into the middle of a major battle. The type you'd usually see near the end and it seems like the battle still isn't over yet. I wonder if this means the true flow might not happen until episode 3 or 4.

I'm not completely sold yet, but I'm leaning towards giving it another episode or two sometime in the undetermined future. It depends on how I feel and perhaps what certain other people say about it. Regardless, I wanted to try at least one episode.

Yay, finally a break from all the Shin Getter, New Getter, Neo Getters and back to Mazinger. Not that I don't like Getter Robo. It's just been getting way too many revamps compaired to Mazinger Z.

It's always nice to come back to a Go Nagai show. He makes only anime I can watch without subs and know exactly what's going on. From the minds of mortal men, the mightiest of machines.

I am just hoping that someone subs this so that I can understand what is happening between fights.

I am not entirely sure the human brain is capable of processing such sustained, concentrated awesomeness.
Imagawa keeps this up the whole series, adding a little coherency in along the way, and he might well live up to Giant Robo at last.

That not only did not make sense, it REVELED in not making sense.

I think we just saw the end of the series? Or...something?

Also, holy crap, was that GREAT?!

Edit: Oh yeah, and that was the Ankoku Daishogun there at the beginning, and aparently Zeus is a...Mazinger?

THIS MAKES NO SENSE BUT IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME

So this might turn out to be yet another series where they show an event from near the end of the story then jump back to the beginning? Regardless I just hope the pacing becomes normal by episode 2 or 3.

This is certainly the most awesome first episode I've seen this season, but yes...this was a great way to show what Imagawa is capable of and where he wants to go with this, but now he just needs to slow down and get us there. I really did think back to Giant Robo at a few key moments, which is a great sign in my book. Also a little bit of Mazinkaiser here and there, but of course, that wasn't Imagawa.

If I'm not wrong, he really hasn't tried to do anything on that scale again though, at least not until now...or has he?

Here are my thoughts:

I agree about this being the best 1st eps of the shows i watched so far, and possibly for a long time. Pretty much the same pace & feeling i had when i watched the 1st eps of Mazinkaizer yet with some new touches.

The eps finished so quickly without me realizing :catgirl: ! that eps did not make any sense in terms of story or connectivity but who cares.....it was SUPER !!!

It seems that Ankuko Dai Shogun part is the another advanced arc of the story, then the eps turned to a flashback before that. I am not sure though if this eps marks the actual beginning of the story or the show is intended to start this way without wasting time to build the story, characters that almost everyone know about Mazinger.

Humm, is it just me or did i see a glimpse of Great Mazinger behind the fire scene ?

Episode 1 Title: "Finale"
Episode 2 Title: "Start Up! Mazinger!"

Speaks for itself, really.

I'm not even going to comment on this episode, since its only purpose was to overwhelm the senses, which by God it most certainly did.

The woman in charge of the Kurogane-ya is Tsubasa Nishikiori, from Violence Jack and other Go Nagai works. In general, it seems that the Kurogane-ya will be a dumping ground for characters from other Nagai manga, Giant Robo-style.

I stand corrected. I only half knew what was going on other than huge slatherings of Chokogin armored awesomeness. I guess this Kurogane gang I never heard of will be explained, but Boss is with them so they have to be good. It's a JAM Project opening theme and some cleavage short of exactly what I love about any Go Nagai mecha show.

Wow what the fuck just happened? I'd like to tell you how great it was but this ep beat me senseless and now my brain is oozing out my ear. It was sort of like a Bizzarro World Micheal Bay movie (by which I mean not sucking Goats.)

It seems this episode was actually some sort of half hour commercial for the rest of the show. So I can't do any sort of actual review until we get a real episode.

I'm definitely going to keep watching though.

Finally managed to watch it subbed.... Man, this is the F'ing Nuclear bomb of awesomeness, the sheer epic scope of this project is frightening! It will be interesting to see what Tsubasa Nishikiori and the Kurogane House gang (and what Boss has to do with them) will do in the series and her relationship with the Kabuto Elders (Juzo and Kenzo), Dr. Heinrich and his daughter Lorelei and the triumphant return of Count Blocken (what he had to do with the dissaperance of Koji's parents) and VizCount Pigman (to my knowledge they haven't appeared in an anime since the original series) without forgetting the classic Mazinger Z cast, and who can forget Zeus, the Z Mazinger!!!:bowsmiley:

I wonder if Grendizer will have a chance of appearing in the series ? I mean he's part of the Mazinger saga. Unless they want to keep it for a separate project in the future like Shin Jeeg or so.

Certainly but, since this may be relevant, in the case of Giant Robo the story was also one of a number of theoretical chapters..and nothing else was ever animated. Possibly intentionally so, I've heard. Perhaps we may have more luck this time around.

Episode two (although it's really episode one) RAW.

-The Op's just a crappy clip show! Lame! The song is suitably kick ass though.

-Giant Robo style opera music plays as we see a badly damaged Mazinger emerge from the darkness. The narrator says a few words as Mazinger collapses! The Great General of Darkness stands triumphantly.

-We see Mt. Fuji as the narrator tells us about Photonic Power.

-Looks like Dr. Hell moved into Drosselmyer's old place. It's pretty awesome looking, though it doesn't seem very functional. I love his theme music. He commands Ashura to do something. Evil, no doubt.

-Dr. Yumi is giving a press conference about Photonic Power. Juzo Kabuto watches on T.V. He is not happy!

-A guy in a Zenigata style coat and hat looks at a body with it's head sliced in half. He recalls similar killings and mentions "Kabuto" while looking up at their house.

-Shiro, Juzo and Koji eat breakfast (prepared by Koji). Much komedy ensues.

-A suspicious samurai is watching from the surrounding hills. Police appear and order him to surrender. The samurai attacks! The Samurai block bullets with his sword! He doesn't cut them in half though, so he isn't quite as awesome as Goemon. Koji and co. are oblivious to the slaughter.

-Shiro and Koji are riding a motorcycle. They discuss Juzo and Mazinger while jazzy music plays. Sayaka, also on a motorcyle, is watching them. Boss and his goons are also watching them...from a yacht!?

-The Detective guy from earlier is following Juzo even into the hotsprings. He won't take his hat off even in the water. Juzo is drunk and naked and the Detective is getting annoyed.

-The suspicious samurai confronts Juzo after he leaves the hotsprings. Juzo seems to recognize him. The samurai prepares to attack Juzo, but a random cop shows up and the samurai slices him instead. The detective shows up just in time to find the body after Juzo and the samurai have left.

-Baron Ashura is in a cavernous room filled with red mist and gives one of those "talking to myself" Ashura monologue/rants we know and love. He/she selects Garada and Doublas.

-Shiro is waiting for Koji to pick him up after school, but Boss's sidekicks grab him instead!

-Juzo uses some bread crumbs and an unfortunate bird to test his "Cagliostro" style laser defense system. The detective is sneaking around and takes a beam to the ass. Juzo invites him in for tea and cookies.

-The detective questions Juzo about the killings. He holds a gun to his head! Does he thinks Juzo is the murderer!?

-Juzo hands the detective some girly pictures instead of the murder pictures they were looking at. He has a hearts for eyes freak out and grabs the pictures, hastily stuffing them into his pocket. Juzo seems to regard him with a mix of contempt and boredom. Suddenly the power shuts off all over town...

-The detective is freaking out! He has no clue what could be happening. Juzo on the other hand seems to have been expecting this. He calmly activates the secret elevator to his underground lab. Iron Mask troops leap through the windows!

-Koji is getting pounded by Boss! Shiro is tied up! Boss's ugly toadies chortle at Koji as he is knocked to the ground. Boss grabs Koji by the neck and starts taunting him.

-The detective shoots down Iron Masks. Hey, Dr. Hell? Guns. You might want to look into them. Juzo runs to a control panel. Boss continues insulting Koji as the toadies laugh it up. Uh oh! Looks like Boss said The Wrong Thing! Koji is PISSED! Shiro casually escapes from his bonds with a "you're in for now!" look. Koji gets a deranged smile as he kicks boss's ass! He has Boss on the ground and is smooshing his face under his foot and laughing maniacally!

-Sayakas voice commands to stop. It doesn't work. Now Boss has Koji on the ground. They finally do stop when a Kikaiju rises from the ocean. Koji escapes with Shiro by motorcycle. He doesn't sound nearly as freaked out about the giant robot as I would have thought. Juzo contacts him by radio and sends the Pilder to him. Another robot rises in front of him and almost chops him with it's sword. Sayaka and her robot appear and take the second Kikaiju out with a flying jump kick!

-Pilder launches! Iron Maskes storm the lab! Juzo confronts them standing on Mazinger! The house expldes! A Kikaiju is almost ontop of Koji! Missiles blow it away, it's Pilder! Koji and Shiro leap into it from the motorcyle! Juzo gives the "God or Devil" speech as Mazinger bursts from the wreckage! The narrator melodramatically bellows something and the episode is over.

Yeah, that was pretty freaken awesome. I didn't really mind watching it raw actually. It's kind of fun trying to figure it out, and it's easy to follow even without subtitles. The animation is good (although not fantastic) and I really like the artwork. I'll give this ep. a B+ It's been a while since I've seen a show that had me anticipating a new episode every week.

edit:Holy crap! I didn't realize this post was so long! Sorry for going overboard there.

Come on, follow the instructions in the OP post, they are really very simple and basic.

Anyway, very fun episode, all sorts of insanity going on. I've decided that I really like Kouji's new Seiyuu, and Sayaka's seems very good as well.

Next time we should get to really see Mazinger in action for the first time.

...now, how long till KABUTO KOUJI DIES IN LAVA?

Dagnabit! This odd quote system is kinda wonky. I just quoted the last post before me since I never actually notice the Re: part. My brain just kind of visually ignores it.

So yeah I was talking about fun in episode 2. Since episode 1 was basically the Opening animation only longer and crazier. I don't mind any seiyuu changes in anything Go Nagai related. Because grew up with dubbed Tranzor Z and even though I play SRW games I'm not that invested in any of them. Can Kouji scream? Yep, then he's good.

I can't wait to see this version's Garada K7 and Doublas M2 in action.

In some ways the grandfather is cool and in other ways he's quite creepy. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll completely forget about the whole bath scene. I hate it when they such jokes.

The whole "I'm uber with my sword" sub plot was kind of boring and they may as well have just said "By the way, he easily cut up another round of generics" as it would have had the same effect.

All right then, I get to see what Boss is like. I've come to the following conclusion. Someone needs to shine some pure light on bloody impurity. In other words, yes, I completely hate the guy already. Then again I never cared for the "Hi, I am a gang member and I'm a complete ass" type character.

In any case, ending the episode where they did was kind of cruel. That being said, I guess it gives a reason to consider checking out episode 3. To see what an initial Mazinger Z battle is like. Although how the battle will go depends on varying factors.

[Anyway, very fun episode, all sorts of insanity going on. I've decided that I really like Kouji's new Seiyuu, and Sayaka's seems very good as well.

I am a bit surprised with the some of the negative feedback regarding Kouji's new seiyuu in some other forums. I know that Hiroya Ishimaru will always be Kouji Kabuto in the hearts of many fans, but i personally believe that the show's new style would do with a new seiyuu for the character, the and the new is a very good one. A bit generic ? maybe but that's the character for Kouji ! A normal high school boy who got dragged into the Mazinger saga weather he liked it or not.

Personally i would accept this seiyuu change without much troubles as that it suits the series style. In fact i like Dr. Hell's new voice more than the original one.

It's not one of those idiotic seiyuu changes like the Shin Hokuto No Ken (2003), Saint Seiya or Zeta Gundam (Four Murasame's) ones.

Yuzo has had more exposure in this series than in the original tv series (where he lasted for about half of episode 1), and is also serving as a showcase for the perverted Go Nagai style humor. Also it seems he's not in good graces with Prof. Yumi (Prof. Yumi was Prof. Kabuto's protege in the original)

The whole "I'm uber with my sword" sub plot was kind of boring and they may as well have just said "By the way, he easily cut up another round of generics" as it would have had the same effect.

You have to be an uber badass if you are Prof. Kabuto's Bodyguard as apparently those 4 murdered guys and the policemen were Dr. Hell Agents, as Prof. Kabuto was safe at home after Inspector Ankokuji found the sliced "policeman". Dr Hell and Baron Ashura did use agents during the original series.

All right then, I get to see what Boss is like. I've come to the following conclusion. Someone needs to shine some pure light on bloody impurity. In other words, yes, I completely hate the guy already. Then again I never cared for the "Hi, I am a gang member and I'm a complete ass" type character.

We know Boss will have his change of heart, I just hope Imagawa keeps some of his edginess and doesn't turn him into the total Goofball that he became in the latter part of Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger.

Perhaps, but only time will tell if it does deliver. Still I'm going to make a prediction that the "Rocket Punch" will be the very first attack we see from Mazinger Z. Whether I'm predicting the obvious or being far fetched, I'm not sure.

Wow. It was easy to follow episode 2 even unsubbed but I have no idea what's going on here.

That narrator is getting really annoying. REALLY annoying.

Asura is weeping and screaming about Zeus!?

Was that evil black cloud in the flashback with Zeus Ankoku Dai-Shogun?

Asura has Superman like powers now!? I mean it made sense with Pigman. But Ashura?

Dr. Hell saves Koji!? The Doctor seems to powers to.

Ashura's army is huge! Though I still think it's silly, considering all of Dr. Hell's super weapons that his soldiers are just armed with swords.

Nooo! We still have to wait ANOTHER episode to see Mazinger in action?!

Not a lot seemed to happen this episode actually. It seemed to be a lot of exposition. It was still pretty fun even unsubbed though. I guess I'll give it a B- Arrg! It's been a long time since an anime has hooked me like this. I don't want to have to wait another week!

Couldn't agree more ! If Akira Kamiya was brought back as the narrator instead of Ryoma Negre's role in (Change) Shin Getter Robo then i see no reason for Hiroya Ishimaru not being the narrator for the this show ? Or at least any other famous ones from the originals instead of Tessho Genda who is one of my favorite seiyuu but sucks as the narrator for this show. Oh well we have to live with it and hope that he won't speak much

For Zeus, it's so so but definitely could have been a lot better. Let's hope he gets better in the upcoming eps.

It is worth mentioning that Shozo Izuka (who played Ankoku Dai Shogun in the Mazinkaizer vs Ankoku Dai Shogun OVA) is playing Uranu's role (voice speaking to Zeus). I think that's the spelling for it if i didn't misread it in the credit.

Now the OP theme is SUPER !!! while the ED is.....well too generic for my taste. But it doesn't matter much since you need 1 theme for a Super robot show when it is included in SRW later :P

A bit off-topic, i found a video concert for the original Lazy's Kanjite Night (renamed Kanjite Knight for Shin Mazinger). I thought it would be interesting to watch :)

Anyway, the subs explained a lot. Uhh, I don't know, I don't really have much more to add except that things are getting more interesting. Ashura seems to have a different back story here so I wonder what motivation he/she has for serving Dr. Hell this time around.

eargh. I don't think I could handle Ishimaru as the narrator. He has a really bad habit of getting shrill when excited, and thats one of the main reasons I wasn't too upset by Kouji being recast.

Basically, unless you get Wakamo to narrate, just don't have a narrator.

Watching Baron Ashura beat up on Mazinger Z was a definite WTF moment. Mazinger Z's initial appearance would have been even better if the narrator had shut up. I'm not sure what to make of the Zeus stuff. Also, I wonder if they're going to drive the God and Devil thing into the ground.

In any case, if this tease is any indication then the next episode has definite potential. So long as we get to see Mazinger Z go all out and of course the narrator never comes up again.

Well, The Ashura thing was surprising, but apparently He/She comes from the lineage of the gods instead of just being the sniveling cowardly freak He/She is in the original series and the narrator is a necessary evil (but I did love the presentation of the mighty Rocket Punch!) as they have to find a way to mix the Zeus stuff with the basic Mazinger mythos, taking the conflict into time immemorial, something out of Chariots of the Gods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chariots_of_the_gods) or something like that.

And the God/Devil theme is basically the "With great power comes great responsability" mantra... It's part of the Mazinger name (Ma-God, Zin-Devil), it was a concept that was explored a few times in the original tv series.

I wouldn't go so far and can't claim to understand Japanese, but he does give an old-school feeling to the show, despite being a little intrusive. I don't really mind him that much.

As for Fencedude's statement about the plot becoming more complicated than is really necessary...that's true at a glance, but there's still plenty of time for a number of things to be explained. Yet even if not all of them are, or at least not with enough detail, I don't think the show would necessarily suffer as a result as long as the main points are still clear in the end.

In short, what's really important should indeed be explained, everything else is optional.

Just how many blows from those blades can Mazinger take!?

Those two guys in the flying robots sure are useless.

Man, Ashura's pretty tough to (presumably) survive getting sliced in half like that!

Holy cow! Juzo's crazy! (as if we didn't already know)

I enjoyed this episode but they seem to be dragging things out more than I'd like. I hope they pick up the pace soon. On the plus side I like that they're exploring the consequences of giant robot fights in populated areas. Really drives home the "God or Devil" thing.

I know the build up is going a little slowly, but if we want a Massive Payoff at the end we have to let Imagawa work his magic, We have to get Koji motivated and with Yuzo taking control next episode to teach him a lesson or two and probably dying it will give Koji the determination and the drive to walk the path beyond humanity and to stand besides the Gods and the Devils as humanity's ultimate defender.

Koji's gone beeezerk!

Again, those three flying robots sure are useless.

The count makes his appearance. I thought we weren't going to see him until much later.

Well, that was a confusing ending.

It's probably a result of the fact some of scenes come from the Bandai Channel Stream of the series. Which includes extra footage. It's mentioned in the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Mazinger_Shougeki!_Z_Hen) for the series. I'll bold the important part below..

The version available here, as with other anime, includes extended scenes not seen in the TV broadcast.

That should help explain things, hopefully.

...what?

Exactly what Shikieiki Yamaxanadu said.

The scenes with lower quality are exclusive to the Bandai Channel stream and not part of the TV broadcast.

Though frankly, rather than merely being "extra" footage, sometimes it looks like they animated the entire episode first and then had to choose which parts could be cut out, which is why it's been largely assumed that they'll be on the DVDs.

Alright! It looks like the plot is starting to move now. I was getting fed up with the last few episodes which seemed to be stretching thing out interminably, but this one has got me interested again. We've got the set up done with now, so I think this show may finally be starting to hit it's stride (I hope).

Yup this Eps have finally got the main plot moving. I just hope that they don't waste too much time with streching small events like the last few eps and squeez the main/important ones in the last eps or so. But then again, perhaps they have a plan B in mind: Season 2 ??

Either ways, I hope that they cover events in the next 20 eps with the right pace & quality. Oh well, let's wait and see.

The eps was ok, but i was expecting more. I am a bit worried about the pace of the events ! I mean from Eps 1 there seems to be a lot of events that none or very little was covered from them so far. Meaning that most of them might just get squeezed into the last eps or so :sd:

I really liked this episode even if there wasn't much action. Adding Tsubasa and co to the Mazinger story seems to be a great idea (so far...)

However as others have said, this show is still to damn wordy. I mean, all the voice actors in this are pretty good so it's not as obnoxious as it could be. But still, pick it up already! Maybe 26 episodes was to many?

In an adaptation of a Go Nagai Show, insanity is a requirement,

Oh, and I'm not sure what to think of the triplets.

You'll see The Gamia triplets (Gamia Q 3), also known as the daughters of Ashura are assassin droids programmed to kill Koji Kauto that appeared in the original series, they also make an appearance on Ep 3 of MazinKaiser, that came out in a double pack with Shuten Doji

Oh, and I'm not sure what to think of the triplets.

I can think of a number of things, though for decency's sake I'll not repeat them here. There's a particular scene with them in episode 10 that I liked. (there's a brief clip at this ep's end) Make of that what you will. :)
I have to say I didn't care for Tsubasa and her gang early on, but they've really grown on me now. Django certainly has an interesting method in dealing with unwanted guests. Lesson learned: If he offers you a lift, politely decline and move on....

I think the show works well for a marathon viewing, but when you're watching one ep a week the pace does seem a bit on the slow side. 'Twas nice seeing more monsters turn up here as well. (and a few favourites at that) As enjoyable as it is, the show's been lacking in monster action compared to previous iterations. Still, what's there is great.

*As Ashura unleases her to take his/her Vengeance against Nishikiori, Django saves the day with SUPER ALLOY Z bullets and Nishikiori stops him from taking Koji out after taking Pilder I think there's enough stuff and with Nishikiori's knowledge to create the Ankokuji Gamia

Oh, very much so. It was great seeing one monster after another show up, only to get their metallic arses handed to 'em in the Mazinger style. :)

I wish Sayaka would get to kill a Kikaiju once in a while though...

Has she ever though? I can't remember her lasting more than a few minutes against those monsters in the old series, let alone actually killing one. She might've stomped on a few Iron Masks though. Even so, she fared better than Boss ever did.

The nonsense going on in the recommendations forum makes me wonder, unfortunately...

It's nice to hear that this show is turning out pretty well, though. I've only caught parts here and there, but the robots look nostalgic, and everyone looks sufficiently crazed to bring a smile to my face. I remember watching Tranzor Z as a kid and not really liking it. It seemed *too* weird, and I was always in suspense that my Mom would choose just the wrong moment to walk into the room (they didn't edit *every* Aphrodite A moment back then). Only later did I realize...the problem was that I simply had no frame of reference at the time to understand just *how* weird that show was!

In the new opening that starts with Episode 16, do I see Grendizer and/or Duke Fleed?

No, We see Energer Z (and in other scene it's pilot with the Kurogane Gang) fighting Mazinger Z and the guy you mentioned was Blade AKA Tetsuya Tsurugi and with him... Great Mazinger shooting Thunder Break!

Any chances of Minerva X coming back from the dead?:P

New opening! I have feelings about that. One the one hand we get a typically kick ass action opening sequence instead of just a cruddy clip show. On the other, while I like "The Guardian" O.K. it's not as bad ass as "Kanjite Knight" was.

Sorry to have to say this, but it doesn't mean what you think it means.

(Spoilers for Episode 25 follow. I'm not going to tag them because it's pretty hard to talk about this without them.)

The page you linked is the mecha designer doing a summary of Episode 25. A very rough translation of the paragraph in question:

"The Fortress of Science! A "What is this doing here!?" kind of appearance. A moment that makes you think "Is this the start of the Great-Chapter!?" And then suddenly, they appear! Imagawa's obligatory Mass-Produced Robot Army! Whether it's Getter Robo G or Black Ox, under Imagawa's direction the mass-produced models can multiply instantly."

(The Fortress of Science is the main base for Great Mazinger. Getter Robo G refers to Getter Robo: Armageddon, while Black Ox refers to Tetsujin 28, both Imagawa shows where those robots were mass-produced. Although, I thought officially they weren't supposed to say Imagawa worked on Armageddon? I guess after 10 years nobody gives a damn anymore.)

Anyway, what the writer was trying to say was that the appearance of the Fortress of Science was a red herring to make you think Great Mazinger was going to swoop in and save the day, only for Imagawa to throw a curveball by having the saviors turn out to be about a gajillion Mazinger Army models. It has nothing to do with whether or not the creators are actually working on a Great-Chapter, it's just the writer being cute.

This is just my personal opinion, but I don't think further chapters are coming. Imagawa loves the idea of a story so vast that the show he actually directed can only contain a small portion of it. It feels very much in his style to simply call something "Z-Chapter" and then leave it at that. And just look at the poor man's workload - in addition to serving as director, he wrote every episode and helped storyboard the vast majority of them (including about a third of them by himself). After this Saturday when the series ends, he'll be lucky to still be on his feet, let alone in any condition to be doing another season.

That's great and epic that Imagawa did all that. Just for the record, how do you know the full extent that he was involved in like that? Does he have a blog? Or is it just in the credits (which I can't read)?

Normally I would say the credits, which should list things like who wrote and storyboarded the episode. For this show, however, things get complicated. Instead of a storyboard and episode direction credit, the broadcast version only lists an "On TV Editing" credit (credited to Imagawa for each episode). I assume this has to do with how the broadcast version is technically an edit of the actual episode, not the episode itself. For the first half of the series, Bandai Channel would air the full episode, and that version would have proper storyboard credits. Now that they stopped doing that, though, the only source for accurate individual episode credits is in magazines like Newtype, which list that information alongside their episode summaries.

Also, I have to correct myself after checking the full list of credits: Imagawa has actually storyboarded almost HALF the series by himself. Since I have the list in front of me now, I'll list them here for those who are interested. Imagawa storyboarded 11 episodes by himself: 1, 6, 14, 18-22, 24-26. He then storyboarded an additional 9 in collaboration with somebody else: 2, 4-5, 7-9, 13, 15-16. Only 6 episodes were storyboarded by somebody else entirely: 3, 10-12, 17, 23. And, as I said before, Imagawa wrote every episode. I'm pretty sure that's some kind of record.

I find this to be one of his more fantastically obnoxious habits. See also Giant Robo.

Also, while its nice that he's taken so much upon himself, the show has some serious pacing issues, and sticking a recap in at episode 23 is terribly bad form.

There are so much elements/characters in the story that can explored or still left, which i highly doubt that the last eps will be enough to cover. Anyway let's wait for the next eps and see.

I am pretty sure that we'll see more of Shin Mazinger thought it will probably be next year. Anyway very good show and excellent job by the production team.

If this article from the Kuwait Times (http://mazinsaurus.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/articulo-del-periodico-kuwait-times/) is to be believed (from MazinSaurus blog), we just might get a new Shin Mazinger.:bowsmiley:

Well we can never know until it is officially confirmed. Though with some common sense i believe it just a matter of time before we see more of Mazin Go.

Though i wonder if the plan is to include the Grendizer arc this time, or just pass it to Mazinkaizer. Or simply continue with a powered up Mazinger(s).

On the other hand, my lucky bastard friend in Kuwait got his SOC Grendizer figure signed by Go Nagai. But then again i got some exclusive merchandises from his Go Wonder Land Museum in Wajima

Well, it has been announced in this Year "Salon del Manga" in Barcelona last October that Shin Mazinger Z will come to DVD... in Spain (http://ramenparados.blogspot.com/2009/10/selecta-vision-licencia-shin-mazinger-z.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RamenParaDos+%28Ramen+Para+Do s%29) (Lucky Bastards!!!) by Selecta Vision (http://www.selecta-vision.com/), the company previously released the Mazinger Z manga in Spain, so If you live in Europe and/or understand Spanish, you have an option.

I'm happy for the Spanish Giant Robot fans. I doubt that the little high school Spanish knowledge left in my skull will cover the dialog.

Seeing as how often characters are revived from the dead in Shin Mazinger, it seems appropriate I revive this thread. I only just watched the show, and I loved it. Took me a while to get around to it, since I never watched any previous Mazinger incarnations. But I loved Giant Robo and expect great things from Imagawa, so I really shouldn't be surprised that I liked it.

After watching I went onto Amazon.co.jp to see how much the blu-ray boxes were going for, and I was a bit surprised by the reviews. I knew the show didn't sell well, but I figured it was just because old school giant robot stuff isn't exactly popular anymore. But the reviews are brutal. I read (slowly) through some of the many 1 star reviews. These are not happy campers. So I guess this was indicative of Japanese fan reaction? I was just surprised to see how much it was disliked.

I imagine the ending didn't go over very well either. I felt glad for Ashura. Finally vengeance on everyone and a measure of peace at last. Such a tortured character - a very memorable villain.

According to Go Nagai himself (his interview can found at ANN), the main target for the Shin Mazinger is the old school Robot anime fans and the fans who grew up watching the Mazinger Trilogy. Definitely not a show that was aiming to sell like say: Bleach or One Piece ? But then again it's the same story with the majority of his remade shows ever since Shin Cutie Honey (1994).

I bought the BD sets and i am happy with the show, i just hope that they don't take so much time to make another season.

Well, I'm not sure what those reviews say, but while I enjoyed the series, I do think it has some major structural issues, and really could have been much better than it was. It generally succeeded in spite of itself, getting by on sheer awesome rather than coherency and logical plot and character paths.

I think sheer awesome was the goal. For me logic has to be thrown out the window pretty quick with this type of show. Though I still don't understand what the point of the first episode was, other than creating confusion.

Now here is sort of an update:

from ANN:

The June issue of Hobby Japan magazine is revealing a new original video animation project called MazinKaizer SKL on Saturday. The new project is billed as the return of the MazinKaiser anime franchise, which is itself a spinoff from Go Nagai's classic super robot manga and anime series, Mazinger Z. More details will be announced in the future.

The anime studio Brains Base and the distributor Bandai Visual released the first MazinKaiser video anime series in 2001. The Mazinkaiser: Shitou! Ankoku Daishogun video anime project followed in 2003.

Now it remains to be seen if this will be a sequel to the Shin Mazinger anime, sequel to the 2001-2003 OVAs, or complete reboot ?

Perhaps Go Nagai wants to make the Mazinger & Mazinkaizer sagas on separate anime or so. Oh well let's wait and see. I am surly looking forward to this one.

MAZIN GO !!!

Should be great, Mazinkaiser rocks. If it was a sequel to True Mazinger you figure they'd go for Great Mazinger as a focus. Plus True Mazinger kind of ended "in the middle of the action"...

So, I'll take a guess that this'll be a sequel to the Mazinkaiser stuff, but we'll see. I'm sure it'll be cool either way.

I'm always up for more chapters of the Mazin Saga, and this will hopefully rock

Call me crazy, I'd say they're Tetsuya Tsurugi and Kabuto Kouji.

It is interesting that their clothes and overall design is different. Maybe this won't be a continuation of any of the anime after all, but it's still possible.

I think so too, well the common sense answer is that they can't be any other than Kouji or Tetsuya.....but who knows ?

The site has been updated with some details, and teaser. It is also available at Youtube:

Looks promising, though it seems to be a complete reboot and not related to Shin Mazinger or the previous OVAs. Oh well, i guess we'll have to wait a bit more for news on Shin Mazinger (S2 or so). For now i am looking forward to this one.

I guess that's the last news about Mazinkaizer SKL here since it won't have anything to do with Shin Mazinger.

According to wiki, Mazinkaizer SKL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazinkaizer_SKL) will be screened on November 27th before getting a BD/DVD release. The show will be three OVA eps.

Won't comment on the show before watching it, but i hope that while we wait and see. Shin Mazinger Season 2 is being worked on

Ok, guessing that is better late than never, for those of you that can play R2 or Area B and have an affinity with Castillian (AKA Spanish from Spain) you can pick up "Mazinger Z: ¡Edicion Impacto!" (http://www.selecta-vision.com/mazingerz/mazingerz.html) thanks to Bandai Visual and Selecta Vision on DVD and Blu Ray.

And some bad news, Bandai has announced that there won't be any Shin Mazinger Shogeki Great-hen. :depressed:

It's amusing that it gets a dub/sub DVD/BD singles release in Spain, but probably doesn't have much of a chance of showing up here in any form. Spanish subs would do just about as well for me as English subs, though after recently buying the JP BD boxes, I'm not exactly looking to add even more to my expenses.

As for no more Shin Mazinger, that's not exactly a surprise. The JP sales were pretty terrible.

Well that's really sad ! The show has potential to succeed the 70s trilogy with darker elements and so. But i guess this isn't the stuff that sells anymore, so it will join up with another fine shows that didn't spark enough interest to commence sequels/more seasons such as: Guyver TV, Claymore, Angel Heart....etc

This show (and those shows, for that matter) don't appeal to the audience that buys lots of DVDs/BDs.

Also Claymore shot itself in the foot, IMO. I wouldn't place it as a "fine show"

Yeah going with an anime original ending that sucked was bad enough.. but the ending pretty much makes it impossible to continue with the manga material. I don't care what some of those morons on ANN think, but Clare rescuing Raki alone fucks everything up, not to mention even meeting, let alone fighting and beating Priscilla at that weak level.

How the fuck do you rewrite that shit so that Raki was with prissy the entire 7 year time skip after clare and co are supposed to be dead. There was so much going on in the grand scheme of things too during those events, they didn't even set up the "real" bad guys.

Agreed about Claymore, the ending would not have been this way if the show was actually planned to span for more season(s).

For Shin Mazinger, you pretty much said the same thing i did. I I also believe that the show creators knew this already a head and even Go Nagai stated in his interview that the show targeted older fans that grew up watching the 70s mecha shows. Meaning that they were not expecting the show to sell like say: One Piece or Bleach in the first place. But i guess even their humble expectations were not met as well. Well as i always say "Never say never". Hopefully, my other favorite show from 2009 "Guin Saga" will have a better luck in getting more season(s).

The fact that you mention One Piece and Bleach makes me think you don't pay much attention to what actually sells DVDs/BDs in Japan.

The BD release is actually a good deal since it has both BD & DVD for a price less than the Japanese release. Since my friend have been pondering on getting the Japanese BDs (which i already did) then this is also a good alternative.
