(Warning, there be spoilers here!)

I finally got around to seeing Gall Force: Eternal Story for the first time. (And I have the other five DVDs waiting to be watched...) I must say that I was getting a vague feeling of deja vu as I watched it, though.

A group of Solonoids fleeing from an enemy, trying to find a new home. The enemy is conducting some sort of exparament looking to create a fusion of their two races, hoping to create a third race that will be the legacy of them both.

A planet it found that they think will be their new home, but it is not to be. Durring a fierce final battle, the hybrid and a Solonoid are made to escape to a new home world. Flash forward who knows how many hundreds of thousands of years, and we discover that world is our Earth. At this point, I could not help but have the song All Along the Watchtower playing in my head.

All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

I'm sure it was a big coincidence... but at the same time, a part of me wonders if Ron Moore might have seen Gall Force years ago and have been subconsiously influienced by it... Mind you, I'm not about to run around screaming, "The new Battlestar Galactica is the worst rip-off from anime since The Lion King!" That'd be quite a silly thing to say. But even if, as is most likely, it is pure coincidence, there is an odd similarity here!

Ahhh....think you probably have that backwards.

Battlestar Galactica: 1978 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica)

He's not referring to the original Battlestar, he's referring to the new one (and more specifically the recent ending).

While some similarities are there, it doesn't feel like a direct rip off to me.

Although it's been a while since I've seen Gal Force.

Yes, I was refering to the newer BSG. Other then the obvious of them both being set in space, not really much to connect it to classic BSG.

While some similarities are there, it doesn't feel like a direct rip off to me.

Never meant to imply it was such... I was just amused by the probably unintentional similarity. (If I had any AMV making skills, I'd be tempted to whip up an opening sequence for Gall Force set to BSG's opening... )

See also:The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. First radio broadcast in 1978.

Despite the age of the effects the 1981 TV show (Guide) is (IMO) far better than the 2005 movie.

Gall Force is one of the more stylistically memorable Sci-Fi animes of its time. Kenichi Sonoda's character designs have worn very well (except for Lamby's awful hair), and the edge-of-the-80's minimalist style of the show is still great to watch. But the plot is a real dog's breakfast of cliche's and tropes stolen from "Alien," "Battlestar Galactica" and a number of other well-known properties, interspersed with some weird quasi-romantic musical interludes. It's been a while since I saw it but I seem to recall this scene of Rabby on the commode, grooving to "Round back the night..."

I also have the impression that the rest of the Gall Force films tended to grow worse and worse in quality as they progressed, but if I had the chance to pick them up I'd do so.

Hmm, I hope you didn't just spoil the ending of BSG in a thread about Gall Force. I'm a bit behind on BSG and haven't seen the ending yet.

On a re-discovering Earth theme, the ending to (& sequel movies + TV series of) the original Planet of the Apes movie made in the 60s That was based on Pierre Boulle's book "Monkey Planet", written even earlier.

Wasn't Toward the Terra movie about re-discovering Earth?

Word. I thought the same thing.

If I had watched the ending of (the new) BSG and seen the various cast members in random cameo-like shots while 'Ryoute Ippai no Johnny' played in the end credits I would have jumped up out of my chair and kicked the TV .................... instead of just screaming at the TV like I did.

Enjoy!!

Um, no! No I didn't! Now look at this shiny object... You are getting sleepy... Very sleepy... You will forget this thread ever existed...

In all seriousness, I do apologize. I think the things I said were vague enough, though, that I didn't ruin things completely for you! And to protect anyone else in your position, I've thrown a spoiler tag over the relevant bits of my innitial post.

Word. I thought the same thing.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed it!

My word, but a lot of people didn't like that ending. Sometimes I feel like I'm in the minority in that, while it did seem a bit wierd, I was satisfied with it. I'd go into more detail... but there's a thread over in "Off Topic" for that... :)

Some day soon, I suppose I'll have to watch the rest of Gall Force and post my thoughts on that. (I do wish Super Deformed Double Feature was available on R1 DVD...) For tonight, though, I'm off to a friends to watch Caprica!

Doesn't Babylon 5:Crusade borrow its basic plot from Yamato?

I'd say that there are more than a few similarities. The real question would be would they have been there if JMS hadn't been "influenced" to go that route by TNT (reportedly).
