The Big O: which OP songs and sequences on which releases?

Okay, so, given the short though convoluted history of the opening songs and sequences on the various R1 releases of The Big O, and my love for the show being enough such that I'd be willing to rebuy it yet again and pay even more due to obviously higher R2J prices in order to have a more complete version, I'd like to make sure I'm not buying unnecessarily.

This, I know:

The original singles release of the first season used the original "Big O!" theme, the parody of the Flash theme by Queen, for episodes 3-13. This song was used with a sequence consisting of a stylized silhouette montage of Roger, his watch, the Griffon, and the Prairie Dog, layered over newspaper and lava backgrounds.

The original singles release of the second season used "Respect," the parody of the opening theme from Gerry Anderson's UFO series, for all of its episodes but one (the exception being one middle episode that began with a lead-in recap from the previous episode). This song was used with a sequence consisting of a montage of scenes from the first season, assigned to different characters.

Now, The Big Question:

Despite the Animax re-airing of the series in 2007 that also corresponded to a replacement of both opening themes in favor of Rui Nagai's new "Big O!: Show Must Go On" song, a parody of "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks (as well as a replacement of "Big O!" in-show towards the end of one of season one's episodes, though no such replacement for "Respect" in two episodes of season two), was this song replacement also implemented on that same year's International Box re-release of the series on DVD?

If someone knows offhand, great. Or, if one of our Japan-dwelling individuals feels inclined to drop a few hundred yen on a rental of a couple of DVDs, ideally one disc from season one and one disc from season two (assuming the International Box discs ever made it to rental), then that would be excellent.

While I can accept that the new song has become "the" song for the series (it's a catchy song, and I've always been fond of The Kinks), I'd also like to own a version of the series that at least has the right opening sequence in place for season two, though having the original second season song would be fantastic. And I ask about the International Box since, as the name suggests, it also included the Bandai Entertainment/ZRO Limit/Animaze-produced English audio track, which I enjoy as much as the original Japanese.

If the season two singles are the only place to get the original second song, I can always just wait for the cheaper Emotion The Best re-re-release next year, which will still include the English audio and still include the correct season two opening sequence.

I can't begin to understand why this was not possible for the R1 release, which uses season one's sequence for most of season two, with a strange appearance of the correct sequence for one episode (and an even more unusual second appearance of the correct sequence in the initial Cartoon Network broadcast that also had the correct song in place). They could've just gotten it right, if at all possible, and saved me having to do...this. :sweat:

So, after an unnecessarily long post, any assistance would be appreciated.

On a side note, as to The Big O's tendency to pastiche, in an interview which was carried in Animage, scriptwriter Konaka Chiaki said:
小黒　先月号の「アニメージュ」でも、そういう話をしたんですけど、マニアックな資質のアニメスタッフが、 視聴者にも観てもらえるかたちで個性を発揮するようになったのが90年代かな、という気がする んです。

Yeah, kind of figured that was the case, as it seemed like too much of a coincidence for the International Box to have been released in the same year as the re-airing yet retain the original songs. I guess that means I can save 20,000 yen and just buy the Emotion The Best box set next March.

Thanks for posting that interview, too. As a big fan of Konaka's writing, as obtuse and convoluted as it can be sometimes, it's always good to hear tidbits straight from the man himself.

Hmm...if that's the case, I might instead go ahead and spend unnecessarily to pick up all the original season two singles, and then make some new DVDs with the English audio thrown in.

Though if I'm going to do that, the simplest thing would be to just take my existing R1 DVDs and my copy of the "Respect" CD single, and make new DVDs from those using the one occurrence of the correct season two sequence. It'd be cheaper, at least. Or, just to be cheeky, I could use an edit of Gerry Anderson's original music instead. :P

Though then that would motivate me to buy the Emotion The Best box set anyway, since I would have spent relatively little money. Heh. :sweat:

Hmm...if that's the case....

Yeah, to sum up, judging from those articles and postings, The Big O International Box has the 2007 Animax version credit sequence and 'Big-O! Show Must Go On', and the Animax 2007 credit sequence is distinct from Season 1's original credit sequence and different (to some extent) from Season 2's original one.

As to the Emotion The Best box set, On the Big O thread of 2ch, a person conjectured that, credit sequence-wise, it would have the same contents as The Big O International Box.

If you would like to check the credit sequence of the Emotion The Best box set, as I said before, I'd like to suggest to you that you should ask Bandai Visual about the contents of the box set.
