View Full Version : Anime with a dark side of love theme

I was wrong one a discussion title. I think it is a good idea to have a listing of anime with the darker side of love theme. I was thinking of Ms Deep, from Read or Die, as in a bad love situation or other non-hentai shows with a bad or darker love in the plot.
What would you suggest?

Outlaw Star - The younger MacDougal brother has a thing for Melfina, but gets very violent and threatening when she spurns his advances
Hell Girl - At least one episode features an obsessed stalker
The Bubblegum Crisis franchise and the Ghost in the Shell franchise - the setting for both shows include men who choose preprogrammed sex droids over real women
Crest of the Stars - One of the antagonists tries to force the female lead into marriage purely to advance his ambitions. His staff is also entirely composed of pretty females (for some reason. . .)
Edit: A couple of others
.hack//Sign - One of the characters has kind of a "dark mother" thing going - she's fiercely protective of Aura (and to a lesser extent) Tsukasa, but God help you if you cross her (or try to grow up)
Pretear - The former heroine turned into a dark overlord (and is trying to destroy the world) because one of her former colleagues spurned her advances

Not sure if you want the love to end darkly or not (not that I'd be willing to spoil either way) but Kannazuki no Miko would definitely fit. It's got a lot of things going on at once, to the point where some people find it a bit too hectic, but this is definitely a major theme. Assuming I'm interpreting the thread right. At any rate I absolutely love the show.

Not sure if it counts but towards the end of Princess Ressurrection such a relationship was shown between one of the royal family members and their servant. But it was shown only briefly in an episode and not really touched upon afterwards. There wasn't much time for anything given that the series began to end around that point.

I don't think a show has ever been made with more "dark side of love" per unit time than Revolutionary Girl Utena. Right offhand, I can think of at least 4 relationships in that show that definitely fit the bill.

Most of the stories in Hell Girl, season 2 (Futakamori) deal with affection, in many different forms (parent-child, siblings, friends, boyfriend-girlfriend) getting warped :depressed:
