Mario Kart DS - Need Help Please

Yeah so im confused on a couple of things with the mario kart DS wi-fi..

1) when you enter the wifi mode, you can see your friends list, when I click on it theres an option to unlock/lock and theres a small picture of a lock pad next to the friends names, what does this do if I unlock/lock it?

2) How do I talk to someone using Mario Kart DS Wifi? Is it possible, and if so, how?

I don't recall the answer to the first question with absolute certainty, but I think this indicates whether they've added you as a friend. As with most WFC titles, both parties need to explicitly authorize the other side to contact them before they'll be considered "friends".

In response to the second thing, it's not possible. Your ability to communicate is limited to your name and your decal. And, I suppose, the number of blue shells you launch at the other players.

Are you positive about the no chat thing?

I specifically remember reading somewhere that if you add someone and they have you added that you can chat with them in the lobby.

I believe you're thinking of Metroid Prime: Hunters, which was, as far as I know, the first DS game to support voice-chat. It implemented this feature in its lobby for use between games.
