View Full Version : Do your family members watch anime?

Just curious. Hardly any of my family members or close relatives are all that into it. For instance, my parents know about anime, but hardly want anything to do with it. In fact, they are quite weirded out by the fact that eyes of anime characters are usually so big.
On the other hand, I do have a few younger cousins who are fans of anime shown on television (Death Note, Naruto, etc.). Although none of them really know about shows that are released only on DVD. In many ways, it's sad to think that I'm the only one in the family who's really into it.

My son and daughter watch some but not to the extent that I do. The only title my wife watched and enjoyed was Emma. So, I'm pretty much on my own.
Do my family members watch anime?
No.

My wife and I are huge fans. My dad watches an occasional anime. The last thing he watched was Claymore and liked it very much. As did my wife and I.

My daughter from Alaska visited recently and actually bought the Shin-chan Season One set from the local Best Buy. Showed her my Case Closed sets, grabbed one saying, "Gimme that". Gotta train 'em right early! lol

Same here :(. My mom just doesn't care for it, and everyone else in my family doesn't even know that it exists.

Not really, no. My parents know about anime but they've never watched any.
My husband and I regularly watch anime together 2 or 3 nights a week. (Watched the first disk of Kaze no Stigma Part 2 tonight, as a matter of fact.)
Not really. I'm not sure if they really know what it is either.

I have convinced my parents to watch anime with me and my brother and we generally watch at least a few episodes a week. I think so far we have watched... Last Exile, Read or Die OVA, Full Metal Alchemist, Gundam Seed, Full Metal Panic, Gundam 8th MS Team, Rurouni Kenshin, and are finishing up Death Note while watching FMA:Brotherhood
I have also some anime with just my mom or just my dad.
With my mom Someday's Dreamers and Great Detective's Poirot and Marple and now some of Master Keaton. With my dad Gundam 0079 trilogy some of Gundam Wing and now Cyber Formula GXP. So yes my family members watch anime. I also got my cousins to watch the first 10 episodes of Code Geass and some random Cromartie.

My parents, mostly my dad, watched DBZ and the like with me when I was growing up. Other than that, I am the big anime fan, my brother much less varied in his watching.

Yes, but not in the sense that they would put in a disc themselves. Dad likes lain and Fushigi Yuugi; mom likes Boys Over Flowers and Shuffle. My sister watches just as much as I do and goes to cons, cosplays, etc.

My only brother watches some anime, but in a much more casual way than me. He doesn't see the point of buying DVD's, for one thing. Mostly watches stuff on TV, like Gurren Lagann and Monster, and burnt DVD-R's of Hikaru no Go fansubs (because he's utterly Go-obsessed). Plus stuff in the past like Outlaw Star, etc.
He watched up to the 5th episode of Saki on CR with me, but after that point declared it was too "silly" for him. The fact that he's obscenely elitist about how much Go is a divinely-ordained "superior" game to Mahjong, and all other games, doesn't help. Though at least it fares better in his regards than Strike Witches. Which did at least lead to "becoming a great person and protecting everyone" becoming a little brotherly in-joke/paraphrasing of every anime plot ever.
And my parents have watched some random anime movies...Spirited Away...Cowboy Bebop movie...stuff like that.

I normally pass things on to my Dad if I get duplicates or if I don't like something. We have different tastes, I prefer slice of life / romantic comedy whilst he likes samurai / more action series.
MY mum and sister .... well I have a few things my sister would like if she watched them but she wouldn't do that and my Mum disapproves of TV in general, not just Anime ....

My brother and I will watch some anime together, but he's not into it like I am. I'm slowly trying to introduce him to new stuff though. My parents are completely freaked out by it. My dad lnows what it is and is pretty cool with me watching it, but my mom has no clue what it is and wants nothing to do with it.

My no-good brother does, although his viewing has lessened considerably lately... as has mine.
Apart from that, my mother loves the Ghibli movies.

Well to answer that question, my brother is the only relative that watches anime. My mom knows that I watch anime but she'll never watch them. Not after the time eight years old ago, when she & my dad (back when he was alive) accidentally walked in while my brother and I were watching the beginning of the "X" movie (Boy, talk about embarrassment when they saw Kamui's mom in the nude.)

My sisters do. My oldest sister and her husband especially. My parents will watch some of the more culturally oriented shows like the Miyazaki films, Grave of the Fireflies, etc. They've been known to be willing to watch other shows to help share an interest in their kids. But usually they're too busy doing other things. They spend most of their time watching live action J-Drama shows.
My grandmother would often watch Anime with me when I went down to her cottage below our house before she passed away. I used to go down there after school everyday for a snack and all and watch various Sentai shows that KIKU had on and Star Blazers and the like. She'd often watch when she wasnt listening to a local Japanese radio station.
It's cultural more than anything. My parents and grandparents didnt grow up watching Anime as you didnt really have TV's in Hawaii back in those days. But at least they're understanding of the hobby since it relates back to Japan.
Most of my cousins will watch it if it's on, or someone lends it to them. Nostalgia mostly I suppose since I know they watched it growing up. But most dont go out of their way to get it. They're mostly too busy living life I suppose. Those few cousins closer to my age do watch from time to time and own some. Although none approach my level of general obsession. Then again...most people in general dont...

We still watch stuff together, but she never started up her own collection or anything.

My brother and his wife in Seattle watches anime, though not as much as I do. My parents in the Bay Area will watch the occasional Miyazaki movie or two, but other than that they do not. My young cousins will watch things like Pokemon.

My nieces loved Sailor Moon when they were younger (the high-pitched squeeing got on their mother's and grandmother's nerves so they were restricted to only in my company) and I watched a couple Dragon Ball movies with my nephews back when I was the coolest uncle ever. But right now I don't know if they even knew what they were watching was anime or that years later, they know what that word even means.
The rest of my family has no idea what I'm talking about.

sadly, no. but if i was ever watching it in the living room then they probably wouldn't mind joining me till i was done. but i only watch at night in my room so it doesn't happen, plus i only watch subs so they wouldn't enjoy it that much.
my brother and sister, who know what anime is, watched DBZ back on Cartoon Network. my mom kinda knows, but to my dad it's all just cartoons. but he'd probably enjoy things like Hajime no Ippo if he caught it.

My younger brother is pretty much the only person in my family who watches anime. In fact, we sometimes watch series together. However, he watches less anime than I do and his tastes tend to be somewhat different compared to mine. He tends to like comedy and action oriented series.

My brother watches some. Never by himself.
I've gotten my parents to watch some of Death Note, one of the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs, maybe some other things. My mom got super interested in the Hunter X Hunter hunter exam arc. That was surprising.

Pretty much all of my generation of my immediate family (myself, my only brother, and three cousins) all have varying degrees of interest in anime- with be being the most involved and my brother not entirely too far behind (largely due to simply being so much younger and having less resources :P). My parents and Aunt and Uncle don't have all that much interest at all, which is honestly just fine with me by and large... as much as I like a lot of stuff, it would be just weird watching it with them. They will go and see Ghibli movies and the likes in theaters though.
I have one Grandmother who has tried for as long as I can remember to dissuade us from being interested in anime or anything that she can remotely consider as being Japanese... she lived in SoCal during WWII and is firmly convinced to this day that every Japanese person she knew was spying on the US for Japan and still harbors a lot of fear and hatred for them... somewhat ironically the complete opposite of my grandfather on the other side of the family who actually fought in the Pacific Theater and was part of the occupation force in Japan after the war- he had a lot of fond memories and favorable impressions of the Japanese he had interacted with while he was stationed there.

Both of my younger brothers watch anime, though not anywhere near as much as I do. They both watched a lot of Cartoon Network until a few years ago, so they ended up watching a lot of the stuff on Toonami and some of their other anime. In fact, if it wasn't for them watching CN, I may not have seen those commercials for Gundam Wing and new Sailor Moon episodes and I may not have gotten into anime when I did.
For a long while, they didn't really watch anything except what was on Cartoon Network but I started showing them some of my DVDs and other things a few years ago. The younger of the two has been watching a decent amount of stuff that I've given to him to watch for a couple years. The older has only recently gone beyond what he's seen on TV and the occasional DVD series I watch with them. This partially because I've pointed him to Crunchroll and partially because I've introduced him to... other things. In any case, he now even watches some shows that I either dropped (Shangri-La) or didn't even try to being with, such as Ristorante Paradiso. That one really surprised me, it didn't seem at all like something he would like.
So, both of my younger brothers watch anime and we occasionally watch things together. My parents, on the other hand, don't really watch it at all. I think my mom saw one or two of the Miyazaki films when my brothers recorded them from some CN marathon and she watched with them. But I don't think my dad has seen any at all aside from just being in the room when my brothers and/or I were watching something and he clearly doesn't have any interest in actually watching any.
Also a 'no' for me, unfortunately.

I got my daughter interested, especially since she loves Laputa, Kiki and Totaro. We watched Azumanga and School Rumble, she enjoys more girly/school themed anime. We also watched Escaflowne, all dubbed btw, she doesn't like anything subbed. My wife on-the-other-hand won't watch anything animated unless it's Pixar.

Whole family "hates" anime without really knowing much about it. One of my sisters claims that it's all the same, which just blows my mind.

No one in my family watch anime on a regular basic except for me. My mother can't get her head around the Japanese culture and keep saying "it a different country over there". If it not American made then it totally goes over her head. My father has been to japan so he a little bit better about it. But i always get well in japan they would do this or this.
there's a little bit of anime love going on in my family outside of myself.
Brother loves video game adaptations such as the various Street Fighter titles. In fact he can still be heard quoting dialogue from the SF2V dub every once in a while. He also enjoyed the Devil May Cry anime. We both think Tekken could've been better :)
Parents saw Princess Mononoke in the cinema way back and really enjoyed it. Father saw Steamboy too (original language w/subs on both counts, thankfully).
I endorse all that stuff so it's all good.
(my mother loves anime OSTs :))

My dad has watched some like Full Metal Panic(he watched a few with me asking what happened next, and briefly looked at Death Note, but he thinks it's creepy crap lol.
My mom watched a little bit of Azumanga Daioh, shes like are you watching the little squeely girls again haha. She likes the Miyazaki films as well, but yes neither of them would put the disc in themselves.
I have a friend at work who likes Death Note, and Hellsing, he likes Desert Punk which I never wanted to see, but I guess in a way I got him interested in anime. My brother first got me interested in anime with Ranma 1/2 he still owns it somewhere? Now with working I don't know what he does in his spare time possibly just sleep lol.

My sister's watched some of my DVD's with me in the past (and she has a friend who is into Sailor Moon, which they watched through a lot at one point). She's not been really into anime like I have, and I don't think she's interested lately.
My brother only likes a few things like Dragon Ball and Outlaw Star. He's not really interested in anime in a whole and the types of shows I usually buy, though. Given he stole a few of my DVD's and sold them off a few months ago, he doesn't seem to have much respect for me or my hobby...
Neither of my parents watch anime. I've shown my mom a few of my Ghibli movies before, and I think she's liked them. Been a long time since then at this point, though. My dad likes movies, but mostly live-action action kind of stuff. Never really attempted to watch anime with him (other than I think I showed him Spirited Away once before).
So, for the most part, no, though thankfully none really hate it either.

My parents, no. In fact, whenever anime comes up in a conversation, my mother teases me about watching "little jumping Japaneese people".
As for my siblings, one of my little sisters did watch the (U.S.) broadcast of Pokemon with me (even if we had to tape it). However, I think her interest was limited purely to that show - she's never shown any interest in watching anything else.
My cousins, though, are into it in a pretty big way. One cousin watches everything he can on tv, while the other actually has his own collection (although its a second - maybe third - love for him).

Not too much. I used to watch a lot of anime with my Uncle and Cousins back in high school, but now not so much as my cousins are both out of state and my uncle is usually too busy. But they were the most receptive.
I can get my mom to watch some times depending on the show. Mostly standalone movies. I did get her to watch Emma with me and she really liked it.
It always baffles me in these does your family watch anime threads that more families don't at least watch some shows. I often think if this was live action they'd love it, but because it's animated they write it off as something they can enjoy. I just don't get the disconnect.

My parents really don't watch anime. My dad thinks it's weird and that I'm wasteing my money. Although he did find some parts of GTO funny when he was randomly watching part of it with me (he was doing something else though, not really paying full attention to it). Although he grew up watching Speed Racer, and still loves the show. My Mom liked Case Closed and Black Lagoon a little bit, and a few others, and I think she sort of gets it, but not really. She still doesn't really understand it. They are both really clueless though... I'm done trying to explain it to them, it's just not worth the time and effert.
Herron: I feel the same. I know they'd like some of these shows if they were live action. But since it's animated they immediately dismiss it. The Animation Age Ghetto (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AnimationAgeGhetto) is quite anoying. I don't understand the disconnect either, but perhaps that's because I've watched anime for most of my life. I wasn't indoctrinated with the "ANIMATION IS FOR KIDS OR IT HAS TO BE EPISODIC COMEDY FOR ADULTS" mindframe, which I hear can be a bitch to get over.
My cousin's fiance (and once in awhile my cousin, although she doesn't really like anime that much) is about the only person in my family (well he's not related to me so does he still count lol?) that I watch anime with. He was into anime long before he knew me though, so it's no surprise. Although he sort of fell out of it after the VHS era. He did watch a few random series on Adult Swim afterwards but that was about it. I sort of got him re-interested in anime :sdsmiley: .
I am lucky though in a way because I have a lot of friends who like anime, and some others who are not opposed to the idea of watching it But probally would never watch anything on their own). We watch a bunch of random stuff together from time to time...

I have caused the utter addiction to anime for my wife. We started watching it together in college, at which point I had already been watching for about 4 years. It made it easy to lead her into some shows I knew she would like (Fruits Basket, Kare Kano) which in turn helped me introduce her to some other stuff like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop that I wasn't sure she would enjoy. She is totally hooked and we tend to spend about 1500 dollars a year on anime as a married couple. She even started an anime club at the high school she teaches at! :)
As for the rest of my family, they have seen some Miyazaki films and little else.

SUCCESS!
I made a deal with my mother recently that if I watched Flashforward with her every night (which is okay so far, but it's no LOST, and I fear it will begin turning into crap like Heroes did), she'd watch an anime with me. So I picked Paranoia Agent and we're up to episode 10 and she's really enjoyed it so far (her favorite moments were episode 3's ending "All your messages have been deleted!" and the crazy stories of episode 9). We're going to marathon the last 3 episodes (since they're pretty continuous at that point) sometime this week. :)
I'd probably have to restrain my father and tape his eyes open to get him to watch an anime, even if were Beck or Big Wind-Up! since he pretty much only likes music/sports, since his judgment is apparently clouded by the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AnimationAgeGhetto. My sister watched Kiki's Delivery Service and loved it without realizing it was anime. I've offered to let her borrow my other Miyazaki films or other anime she might like, but she has this bizarre behavior of only liking things her friends liked (perfect example: I mentioned how The Office, US version, was really good, and she rolled her eyes. Two years later, she's an Office fan, because all her friends had been watching it. *SIGH*). I'm pretty sure grandparents, aunts, and uncles aren't interested, and I think one of my cousins has seen Akira but that's about it.

I don't know how often my brother watch anime. He says that he's watched Bleach on a few occasions.
My sister and brother-in-law watches a genre that I've never cared for.. So yea.
